About this property
Running Bear River Lodge - Pet Friendly - 9 Bedroom Home - In Town - On The Rive
Formerly a bed and breakfast, this lodge-style luxury home features 9 differently themed bedrooms and 8 1/2 baths to accommodate up to 24 guests. A huge, new porch faces the river, complete with grill, picnic tables, and plenty of seating. Up the stairs to the left, find the Train Room (sleep 3 in a queen and daybed) and the Mardi Gras Room (sleep 2 in a queen). Each room has its own bath, TV, and private balcony. Up the stairs to the right find 4 bedrooms, each with a private bath, TV, and shared wrap-around balcony for outstanding mountain views in every direction. The Kachina Room (sleep 2 in a new king bed) has custom artwork (paintings and hand-carved kachinas), a Kokopelli shower curtain, and leather on woven reed handmade barrel chairs. The extra-large Fish Room (sleeps 4 in 2 queens) focuses on making anglers feel right at home with fishing gear, fish lamps, fish shower curtains, and more. Both of these rooms face the river. Across the hall, the extra-large Indian Princess Room (sleep 4 in 2 queens), done in pink and soft teal, features interesting Indian portraits from the princess to her handsome brave to her wise elders and the warrior shower curtain. The 4th bedroom on this side, perfect for a very romantic couple, is known as the "tasteful" Bordello Room--done in rich reds and blacks with gold accents. It sleeps 2 in a new king bed. Downstairs find 3 more bedrooms. The Master Suite, known as the Anasazi Room of the Ancient Ones, sleeps 4 in a new king bed and queen sleeper. The decor features handmade baskets, a commissioned painting by a local artist, and rock art style wall decor. This large elegant room, perfect for those with altitude problems, also includes a small private tiled sun porch with a separate outside entrance and a private bath. Outside this door is a 5x8 dog kennel, an extra convenience in this pet-friendly home. The Wildlife Room (sleep 2 in a queen) focuses on the wide variety of animal life in Red River from elk to bears to ducks to deer. This cozy room shares a Jack & Jill bath with the Cowboy Room next door. Done in reds and blues, the Cowboy Room (sleeps 2 in a queen) will delight the wanna-be cowgirls and cowboys in your family. Boots, saddles, 10-gallon hats, horses, six-shooters, and rodeo art blend together in this rustically charming room. All 3 rooms, complete with TV and wood floors, give way to the saltillo tiled living space on the rest of the main floor. The main front entrance opens into a media room with a full complement of DVDs for both kids and adults. The TV in this room works well for those who have brought their own video games and hook-ups. The secondary front entrance opens into a long narrow laundry room with a new gas dryer, a fairly new washer, and lots of space for hanging skis, raincoats, or hip waders. Winding through the hall, you pass through the mudroom (with a large utility sink) and past the huge double door pantry into the fully stocked spacious kitchen. New stainless steel appliances, a butcher block island, 2 crockpots, a wok, 1 coffee pot, supplied complement of spices, and a new Keurig (bring your own K-cups) plus plenty of cookware ensure lots of tasteful meal opportunities. The dining room, with its 5 tables and lots of chairs, allows for cozy family meals. Be sure to notice the old skis and the many nutcrackers lining this wood-paneled room with a huge log beam ceiling. After dining, sprawl out in the family room in front of the new 56" flat-screen TV or enjoy the wood-burning fireplace. Open the windows to enjoy the refreshingly clean mountain air and the sound of the rushing river as you drift off to sleep in this enormous home with a cozy, intimate feeling, just a few blocks away from the ski lift and Main street. About the host
Hosted by Red River Real Estate

I love to travel and see the world, but when it gets really hot in Texas, it is time to go to the mountains. Although I have visited all 7 continents, there is something about Red River that has captured my imagination. Perhaps it is the friendly town. Perhaps the cool mountain air and stunning views. Perhaps it is my encounters with wildlife: deer, elk, bear, wild turkey, squirrels, birds, you name it. Perhaps it is finding out that my great great grandfather visited here during the mining heyday and invested in the community. Perhaps it is the wealth of history and the charm of an old mining town that has reinvented itself. Now that I'm retired, I like to bring my 3 dogs for a month in the summer where we hike together and explore together in my 4WD. I find the peaceful atmosphere conducive to writing the book I'm working on. I hope you will enjoy my townhouses as much as I've enjoyed decorating them and sharing them with other travelers.
Why they chose this property
A friend invited me to visit her townhouse when I was going through a tough period in my life. I fell in love with the friendly town, the wildlife, the mountains and cool summer weather. Since it is only 10 hours from my home, I decided it was time to buy a place and explore further. Every time I come, I find something new to see or do. I recently found out about my great great grandfather's experience here by buying an old newspaper in one of the gift shops. I suppose I have a genetic connection to this place!
What makes this property unique
Words cannot adequately describe the feeling of sitting on the balcony with a cup of hot chocolate, watching the sun turn the mountains from gray to pink to glowing red. For the early riser, one might see bears wandering through the nearby river or deer munching on the bushes. On the other hand, if you are a nightlife person, the two local bars provide great live music and are a short two blocks away.
