HoHum is a beautiful beachfront home on Windermere Island; a secure gated community, just over a tiny bridge from the main island of Eleuthera. Windermere has long been a quiet hide-a-way for British Royalty, former U.S. presidents, famous explorers like Jacques Cousteau, and regular folks—all going there to decompress and enjoy the beach.
HoHum is a mid-century bungalow-style home that blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape (and is literally on the beach). It has a 2-bedroom/2-bath main house and a 1-room studio/guest house, with 3rd full bath. The house features an open floor plan and easy one-floor living in a dreamy setting—overlooking a turquoise sea.
HoHum is a simple beach house that is great for couples and families with kids. The main house features smart tropical design, including tile floors throughout, and high vaulted ceilings. All rooms and bedrooms offer ocean views and breezes through large picture-windows and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors. The house has a large comfortable living room, big breezway with dining and sitting area, pretty kitchen, plus wrap-around waterfront patios for outdoor dining and sunbathing.
The bedrooms in the main house are both spacious with full en-suite baths and water views. The 'master-bedroom' has a king bed, office nook area, and a large bathroom with double vanity sinks, bathtub/shower, and separate toilet (plus gated garden with outdoor shower). The 2nd full bedroom has its own oceanfront patio, 2 twin beds (easily convertible to king) and vanity area with sink, plus a separate bathroom with toilet, shower, & sink. The layout of the bedrooms also offers privacy for 2 couples sharing the house, as they book-end HoHum's living room, kitchen, and glass-walled breezeway. The breezeway's sitting area also has a (full-size) futon-sofa, good for kids or an extra sleeper.
HoHum has 2 well-kept beach paths off both corners of the house. Paths also have 2 cold-water showers for rinsing sandy feet. HoHum is ideal for sunbathing, outdoor dining, and unforgettable sunrises and sunsets.
HoHum's bonus studio/guest house also overlooks the ocean and is about 100-feet from the main house. The studio is a great remote workspace or can be used as an extra private sleeping space. It has 2 twin beds (convertible to king); its own patio and beach path; high ceiling; kitchenette (with minifridge & sink); and a small bathroom with sink, shower, and toilet. It was originally designed for use as an art studio, so it is an amazing place for painting and drawing, with lots of natural light, counter space, center island, and easels available.
Note: “Windermere” is very breezy, so AC is not always needed, but HoHum only has AC in the 2 main house bedrooms and the studio. Other common rooms, like the main living room have ceiling fans.
The Beach: HoHum is a haven for swimming and snorkeling. The beach is protected by a coral reef, so the water is calm and crystal-clear—especially great for kids. The sand is made from coral, so its powder-soft and cool to walk and play on at-all-times—it extends 5 miles for leisurely strolls & jogs. There is also a 2nd beach available to guests, called West Beach. It is just down the road on Windermere's sound side and is also nice for swimming and shelling, and often hosts Sunday beach picnics during high season (bar/picnic hosts accept cash & venmo).
Please Note: because of HoHum's super-close proximity to the beach/water it does need some re-painting to weather-worn exterior areas (happening soon). Outside, the outdoor shower off master bath, plus the 2 beach paths showers are good (but one outdoor shower off 2nd bedroom is off/pending repair). Inside, the extra kitchen bar sink and a bidet have been disconnected (but you won't need or miss them). The house remains a gem, despite a few imperfections.
HoHum is great for guests who appreciate a stylish shabby-chic home right on the beach (over more formal homes and those that require daily hot walks or car rides to get to the beach). If you are a fussy high-maintenance type, needing everything be five-star and brand new, then this is not the right property for you. But if you enjoy easy in/out beach access, having sunset cocktails on the patio, and playing cards & board games in the evenings with your kids—HoHum is the place for you.
