We loved our stay in Susan’s beautiful and thoughtfully appointed home. Enjoyed walking and getting to know the neighborhood, took advantage of fun local shops and restaurants and appreciated all the helpful information from Susan regarding gorgeous Montana nature and attractions outside Bozeman. Looking forward to a return visit as soon as possible!

Excellent location to downtown

We were able to walk to many restaurants, great exercise about 15 min stroll to downtown, 5 min drive. The property is remodeled and really well tended to. The upstairs reading room, the backyard deck and front porch swings were so inviting for morning coffee and afternoon wine.

Beautifully renovated, 112 year-young house!

Most comfy beds in 5 weeks of travel!! Well equipped kitchen. Clean, convenient to great walking neighborhoods, museums and downtown. A front porch swing was more morning coffee go- to. The lushly landscaped backyard was my evening cocktail place. Thank you for a great place to relax

Grad stay

It was a great location for being close to university and downtown The house did get very warm so I wish there would have been AC and we did have trouble with the TV. The owner did get back to us to try and help solve the issue but we determined the cable box was bad. For the price we paid I think it’s important to have everything working.

Lovely, pristine home in beautiful Bozeman neighborhood

My family had a wonderful experience renting this beautiful home for a week. Creatively and meticulously renovated, this property offers numerous spots for a family to be together and also to spread out and get some space from one another. The owner was exceptionally responsive and helpful. Our initial rental with another company fell-through at the last minute, and Sue was generous and accommodating. We hope to stay in this beautiful home again the next time we're in Bozeman!

Peaceful Retreat

This home was the perfect place to meet up with family. Proximity to MSU and downtown allowed us to walk the neighborhood and avoid renting a car. Communication with the owner was effortless and we found everything well organized at the home. Couples will especially enjoy the master retreat suite that expands the entire second floor. If you enjoy cooking, you will appreciate the modern kitchen. Elegant is the perfect adjective for Black Dog Hideaway. Thanks for sharing this home with us.

Excellent place to stay in Bozeman

The Black Dog Hideaway is an outstanding property to rent in Bozeman. Sue is a very attentive owner and addressed the one very small issue we had immediately. The kitchen is very well stocked with all needed utensils, pot, pans, coffee maker, etc. The house is nicely maintained and very comfortable. The bedrooms are large and comfortable. The hidden gem is the coverage back porch, which is a great place to enjoy drinks and appetizers. The Black Dog is also an easy walk to downtown and it's nightlife. The university is very close by also. I would recommend the Black Dog to anyone visiting Bozeman.

Perfect for a reunion

Perfect location. Sue was great to work with - very accommodating. We were in Bozeman for a MSU graduation for which we were hosting a BBQ (at a different location) as well as a mothers day brunch. The kitchen was perfect - enough room for three chefs to prep and cook! Accessories (silverware, place settings, platters, glasses) were plentiful for a large crowd. One note - look at the notes posted inside the cabinets. Black Dog Hideaway was exactly what we needed for two families. Thank you, Sue.

This is a lovely home.

The next door construction invaded our sleep very early in the morning. We did not figure out how to open the laundry door until the last morning. Being handicapped I had difficulty navigating the front steps which didn’t have rails on lower levels. However, the house and back porch were great places to visit with our friends.

Vacation in Bozeman

We stayed in Bozeman for a month and really enjoyed Black Dog Hideaway. It is very close to downtown and we were able to walk to the CO-OP grocery/restaurant and the Emerson Grill among the many other wonderful places to in town to eat. It was also very convenient to downtown shopping for other things. The kitchen had everything we needed, the beds were comfortable and the house suited our needs. Since we are Corgi owners we really enjoyed meeting the one living in the basement, Pepper, who really reminded us of our own Corgis. It was quite warm the first week or so outside and we found the street noise a little loud when trying to sleep in the late evening with the windows open. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to others. Sue, the owner, contacted us several times during our stay to make sure everything was satisfactory and offered suggestions of local things we might be interested in.

We adore historic homes and this one was exactly what we were looking for as we moved our last into college. We had a super comfortable stay and enjoyed all the beautiful and unique details maintained in this great property! We were able to walk to most places downtown and even north end of campus. Will try to stay here again!

About the host

Hosted by Susan Kirkland

Host profile image
We are Johnny and Susan Kirkland, we live in New York, on Long Island's North Shore, most of the year, but all of our 4 children have moved out west and made it their home. So, we thought we should follow suit, we just aren't quite ready to leave New York full time yet. We bought our house and stay there several times per year, so you can be sure that all of the creature comforts are available to you. Susan is a retired Special Education Teacher, who still substitute teaches on a regular basis and Johnny is a Physicist and software developer. Since our children have gone, we've picked up a new hobby of raising guide dogs. We have successfully raised Josh, who is a working guide dog, and we have raised London, who is now a Vet Service Dog for a disabled Vietnam veteran, and we have Gretha, a breeder dog for the GDF, as well as Dave, Sushi and North. North is yellow and the other three are black labs. This is where our home's name comes from, The Black Dog Hideaway is a tribute to our love for our guide dogs and the important work they do.

During your visit you may see our son Grant who takes care of the Black Dog Hideaway and lives in the private basement apartment with a separate entrance, or when you are making a reservation you'll talk to Sue who manages the home and bookings.

Please feel free to contact us anytime, we'd love to hear from you!

Why they chose this property

We fell in love with this house the moment we stepped inside, and we know that you will too! There are two adorable porch swings on the front porch, and the subtle character is amazing. Downstairs, you'll notice the original woodwork, and original built in cabinets from days gone by. Upstairs was updated with comfort in mind. This house has the best of both worlds, old world history and modern updates and comforts. Plus, you can't beat the location, and proximity to downtown Bozeman!

What makes this property unique

Please enjoy the jetted tub in the master bath. Also for your comfort we have installed baseboard heaters under each sink to warm you from the bottom up.
In the master bedroom you will find a built -in wall heater for you additional comfort. For your comfort on those very hot summer days we have installed a Mr. Slim air conditioner in the master bedroom.
The stereo is located in the master bedroom cherry wood closet, and can be heard throughout the second level on built -in speakers.
In the living room, we have installed a 55 inch 3DTV with 3D glasses for 6. Original hardwood floors have been enhanced with walnut ribbon knots and refinished to their natural beauty. With the push of a button, you can enjoy our gas fireplace and enjoy a cozy relaxing atmosphere with family and friends.
The kitchen has granite counter tops, double oven, pot filler over 5 burner gas stove, ice maker on the refrigerator door, double sink, and trash compactor.
The walk to town is easy, and close, as is Cooper Park at only two blocks away. We have a covered backyard deck with outdoor table and chairs that seat 6 for added summer entertaining. A Weber grill is also on the paver patio. Our back yard is professionally landscaped with quaint limestone walk ways, gardens, and a paver patio in keeping with our 1911 Craftsman style home. Fully fenced in yard.
