We enjoyed our stay. The apartment was very spacious and had everything we needed. The host was very communicative which made our stay even better. We will definitely stay again, our daughter attends Virginia Tech and she is a freshman so we will have plenty of more visits over the next several years.

This rental was everything my family needed! We were traveling to visit my brother who lives in the area who was running the local marathon. We planned to have some of our group stay with my brother, and part with me at this rental. Because we all travelled in at different times, my family needed a place to relax and camp out while my brother rested before his rate, and while I was still en route. I communicated to Shawn and Nikki with the update and they were super flexible, even though I didn't anticipate my family stopping by the rental and greeting me upon arrival. It worked out so well and the communication was great. The location is convenient, walkable to downtown in about 20ish minutes, and private. I will note that it wasn't totally clear to me that there was a murphy bed in the second bedroom, which was absolutely no issue at all, but I did learn that upon arrival, it seemed. Also, there were tons of remote controllers for lights and fans, and not all worked. This, again, is not really a big deal for us but noting that it was a little confusing. Overall, the stay was fantastic. I would love to stay again or recommend to anyone who is visiting to stay here. Thanks, Shawn & Nikki!

Better than the pictures

From the moment we walked into this 100 year-old home, we were blown away by its charm, character, and cleanliness. The space is full of stories. You can just feel the history in the walls! Yet it’s so thoughtfully maintained and beautifully prepared for guests. It was very clean when we arrived, the light really shines through the tall windows and the welcome was truly next level. The host left us a thoughtful gift we’ll definitely use, plus a basket of essentials (like a toothbrush and other items you might forget). It’s such a helpful and generous touch. The bathroom is probably my favorite part — it’s so quaint and full of character, and the tub is surprisingly deep (even my 6’8” husband could enjoy it!). The towels are soft and fluffy, the beds are incredibly comfortable (our kids, ages 3&6, loved the Murphy bed, and the king bed in the next room was perfect for my husband and I), and the furniture is cozy and inviting. The special touches like the changing color lights with a small remote and the “rainbow fire” were the highlights for my 3 year old son! The porch swing is an absolute dream. We have already spent time relaxing there. The kitchen is very functional and quintessential and the washer and dryer are top-notch. Everything here just feels intentional and full of love. The welcome and attention to detail has already been exceptional. It’s such a joy to share this historical, tim

4/10 Poor

We really wanted to love this apartment, but our experience here was horrible. The hosts seemed unconcerned or maybe disbelieving of our issue, although VRBO refunded half of our money after our stay because the hosts declined to. We noticed a very strong floral/chemical smell and felt sick with headaches the first night, so we looked around more and found 7 electric Glade air freshners plugged in throughout the 500 square foot apartment, all on maximum output. ONE Glade plugin is rated to cover 550 square feet! The hosts messaged that they had had a guest with a smelly dog before us and wanted us to have a "fresh stay." My daughter had an asthma attack and we should have left the next day, but instead we tried to air the place out and bought an air purifier, which didn't really work. Only two windows opened, and they didn't have screens so we felt unsafe leaving them open at night. We stayed out of the apartment as much as possible but still felt ill every morning after trying to sleep with the smell and bad air quality. The hosts didn't make any effort to address this issue or air out the apartment, and responded with "We're sorry" as if we were just being dramatic. Seven plugins on full blast in this tiny space with little ventilation really created an unhealthy and toxic air quality for anyone to spend time in, and it worries me that the hosts seemed oblivious to this and refused to acknowledge it as a serious health concern. I'm writing this review to save the next guy!
The seven Glade plugins before we put them outside.
The living room window opened but didn't have a screen.
The cabinets in the kitchen are giant-height! We thought this was funny, but also we couldn't use the wine glasses.

Response from VrboOwner on 16 December 2025
We regret your stay did not meet expectations. From check-in, we encountered several challenges, culminating in scent concerns. We took steps to address a previous guest odor with air fresheners. The property was inspected before your arrival, & all fixtures, including windows, were operational with no scent or other issues noted. Given the layout, the scent may not have dissipated fully across the 1000 sq ft unit. While sympathizing with any discomfort, we received no further communication after your friend brought in an air purifier. We assumed, as you stated in your initial message, that you would depart if no improvement. Had you alerted us to a continuing problem we would’ve explored other mitigation efforts such as moving you to another unit. In consultation with VRBO, we issued a partial refund as a goodwill gesture. Considering you stayed for all remaining days, this seemed reasonable. And despite challenges, we left you a 5-star review in good faith, hoping to maintain a positive relationship. However, we are disappointed that your review seems to lack consideration for all positive aspects of your stay. As hosts with a long history of 5-star reviews, it’s surprising that our first low rating stems from an issue with air fresheners. We understand it’s impossible to please everyone but disheartened that your review will impact our livelihood. Nonetheless, we remain committed to providing the best possible experience for all guests. Best wishes in your travels.
