Welcome to The Lichen Manor, your historic coastal retreat on California's rugged north coast! This spacious 4-bedroom, 3-bathroom artist's estate sits on 20 forested acres just 5 minutes from Mendocino Village, offering the perfect blend of historic charm and modern luxury for families and groups.

This one-of-a-kind home was originally commissioned by world-renowned seascape artist E. John Robinson (1932-2008), created over 4,000 breathtaking ocean paintings and was featured on four Reader's Digest covers. Inspired by the English countryside, he designed this traditional half-timbered cottage as his coastal retreat: a space of reflection, creativity, and natural beauty.

Today, the home has been thoughtfully re-imagined by the current owner (also an artist) with yellow pine flooring, custom walnut kitchen cabinetry, and hand-crafted details throughout. Large groups will enjoy expansive common areas, hot water cowboy tubs perfect for starlit soaks, and lush English gardens with a koi pond. Beach access is just minutes away.

What an amazing abode to stay in! Not only was it very comfortable, but this house was beautifully decorated from furniture to light fixtures. It really looks like it should be in Architectural Digest. The newly remodeled interior is so clean, and tastefully designed. Our family of 7 stayed there comfortably. And it was just fun to say “let’s meet at the manor”. We didn’t use the outside much because it is winter and between storms.

Just wow! Lichen manor takes it to a whole other level. This place is so beautiful and charming. As soon as you walk in you can see that whatever hospitality company this is is top notch. Ive never stayed in a vacation rental that was, not just more well stocked than any other place I've stayed but stocked with better quality housewares. Everything you could possibly need to cook, bake or bbq with is in this house. All of the rooms are tastefully and impeccably furnished, the place is delightful to look at and just be in. The beds were super comfortable and bathrooms are gorgeous as well.We had a small family and friend reunion and this place was perfect. I had no idea that along with the house we were renting about an acre of running around room. There's a big yard and quaint pond and a sort of garden maze I think the previous owners had created but let fall into disrepair. This place is beautiful but clearly still a work in progress. I imagine they are going to do something fabulous with the garden maze in future. I can't wait to find out because we will most likely be booking this place again next year. Definitely take the time at some point on your stay to sit quietly in the yard. You are essentially in the middle of the pygmy forest and on a sunny day it's so pleasant to sit and listen to the woods.
