About this property
Big Horn Hideaway House: 4 bedrooms, 100-mile view
Mountains higher than Yellowstone, wildlife that's really wild, exciting history, and no crowds! The Bighorn Region is a vacation destination for the discriminating visitor, and this rustic cabin on the eastern face of the Bighorns is filled with charm and located near Sheridan, Wyoming.
Owners occupy the basement apartment (onsite but separate and out of sight). Single group renters get main floor, upper floor and loft. Brand-new, huge, astounding deck and laundry room are shared space. Additional bedroom may be available upon request at additional charge, especially in June and October. Note: we will not accept rental requests longer than fourteen days.
Dogs and cats live on the owner level and unpenned outside. There are horses onsite. 2022 remodel/refresh throughout.

This is a rustic, quirky, charming 30-year old cabin on the face of a mountain, off the grid. Adventurous guests only! This cabin was built by hand by its only previous owner, modeled after The Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone, where he was a park ranger in his younger days. It runs propane heat with two wood burning stoves. The house was a very popular bed and breakfast for many years.
Stairs: You can access one bedroom, the kitchen and dining, two bathrooms, and a living area with no stairs, but there are multiple staircases to the other area of the house.
We keep it stocked with spices and cooking oils. We have a full kitchen with appliances and cookware, dishes, and utensils. And a giant coffee percolator. We provide towels and linens.
This mountain house is gorgeous...AND it requires operation and living "intentionally." If the owners are not onsite, you will need to follow instructions on how to conserve power, run a generator, use a fireplace, and fill cistern water. It is at the end of a single lane private road which is winding and steep. The power is from solar, the water from a well, the sewer is septic. It has excellent 4G/LTE cell phone reception and fast, reliable internet. There will be NO landline phone.
Monitor the weather daily, bring appropriate gear for severe weather year-round.
You may see wild animals near the house. You may see a mouse in the house. Also, you are renting a mountain cabin without maid service or a cook. In some months, mountain cabins will have flies. Period. If you want a pest-free vacation experience, you should NOT pick a rustic mountain cabin, and you should expect that authentic pests come with an authentic mountain cabin experience. Four wheel, all wheel, or front wheel drive required in ice, mud, or snow, and highly recommended year-round on our steep, private gravel road, and with our mercurial weather.
But if these things don't deter you, you will adore this charming, creaky, gorgeous place, which is bordered on two sides by BLM land and has access to the entire Bighorn National Forest. It's on the eastern face of the mountains overlooking Sheridan and on into Montana to the north and Moncrief Ridge to the east.

About the host
Hosted by Alexis Nikirk
I am a retired chemical engineer married to a mystery writer. I am a big-horse enthusiast, surfer, bassist, and hopeless romantic, with five grown children, two cats, and three dogs (but only two draft horses!). If you want to read my wife's novels, add "Fagan" between my Pamela and Hutchins and you'll find them. We love our rustic Wyoming cabin. We share it with the Air BnB community in the warm months, when we're not hosting writer or artist retreats . . . or those five kids and their families!!
Why they chose this property
Charm, views, unique, and rustic. Amazing, huge, brand-new deck. Large groups and pets welcome. Adjoins public land and the Bighorn National Forest. On the east face of the Bighorn Mountains. Only seven miles from historic Big Horn, WY and fifteen from the old west of Sheridan.
What makes this property unique
Bordered on two sides by public land, this big, charming, rustic cabin is on the last road before Red Grade closes for the winter, and before reaching Bighorn National Forest, making it the ideal spot whether you're in the cabin enjoying the view or accessing the wilderness.
