Just down the coastal Akoni Pule Highway is the historic town of Kawaihae where King Kamehameha made his home and united the Hawaiian islands. Stop by the Hale l'a Da Fish House for the fresh catch or try the shrimp po' boy sandwich at the Seafood Bar & Grill on your way through town. If you're in the mood for a bike ride, cycling along the Akoni Pule and other coastal highways is some of the best in the world.
From Kawaihae, you can head out for some of the best sport fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving in the world or take a scenic drive up the winding A Mamalahoa Highway to the lush and beautiful town of Waimea to visit the weekly farmers market. Want to spend time at the beach or hit the links? The world-renowned Mauna Kea and Hapuna Beaches and Golf Courses are just minutes from the house and offer some of the best surfing and golf in the world.
Drive north from the house and visit the sleepy town of Hawi and the spectacular Pololu Valley beyond. If you're feeling adventurous, take the path from the lookout to the valley floor and explore the secluded black sand beaches and clear Pololu stream as it winds through the lush valley scenery.

Wonderful home

This is such a beautiful private home. Plenty of room for everyone to spread out. The pool was used nonstop, watching the whales daily from the property was very special along with the incredible sunsets. This is a home we will definitely return to.

We had a large group but more than enough of space. House was clean. The amenities are great. Sunset every evening. This is a house you can just hang out at all week and not need to go to the beach. Would highly recommend and would definitely stay here again.

Everyone loved it. Jeff, the manaager, was easily accessible for any issues that came up.Suggest that owner respond much faster to messages through VRBO.Also suggest there be a draer with pencils, paper, scotch tape, screwdriver, etc.

Home away from home

The house and property were so comfortable. The kids (11-15) couldn't get enough of the pool. A lot of towels for pool, beach, and shower use. More than enough room for all 13 of us. Beautiful views, saw plenty of whales off shore. House could use some deep cleaning but over all was clean, the beds and furniture were really comfortable. Some minor repairs need to be made in some parts of the house, but that is to be expected in a house that is twenty years old and well loved. Be prepared for mosquitos, especially in the evenings! The groundskeeper was responsive, helpful, and really nice. The whole family was really able to just get away and relax. Thank you for such a great vacation!

Anniversary celebration

House was very spacious and lots of room for 16 people to spread out. The outdoor lanai and pool were big hangout spot. The table had room for our family of 16. The view was beautiful. The house did not have air conditioning but the expansive sliding doors and windows had screens on them and the breezes that blew through kept the house cool. There were floor fans and ceiling fans for the bedrooms but a couple did not work. They were also in need of a good cleaning. The property manager brought 2 new floor fans when we gave a call. There were a few things that needed upkeep in shower areas with broken parts but showers were still usable. Some areas needed a better cleaning. Overall the house and outdoor area were beautiful and both had plenty of space and everyone had a great time.

Extended family vacation at Hula Hula Ranch

Overall this was a beautiful and huge house, with a fantastic pool + spa that was perfect for our extended family of 13 people total. The good: the house, and all the individual bedrooms and bathrooms, were actually much larger than they appear in the photos, and all quite comfortable. The same can be said for the pool and spa, where we spent many enjoyable hours. The house was generally kept very comfortable by the breezes blowing through the wall to wall screen doors. The property manager, John, was very responsive and helpful during our trip. Kohala Ranch, where the house is located, is quite beautiful and extremely private. The location was also close to many beaches, includes beautiful Hapuna and Mauna Kea, as well as a reasonably short drive to Wailea and Pulolu Valley. Needs improvement: The cleaning of the house was not great. The kitchen in particular could use a deep cleaning, and better organization of the pots, pans, and utensils. We had some trouble with mosquitos in the back of the house during the early evening, which made it impossible for some members of our party to eat out on the patio, despite trying to use the citronella torches provided. That issue was exacerbated by the fact that the table on the patio was the only dining table large enough for all of us to fit around. There is no real dining table in the house. Finally, there may be nothing that can be done about this but there were some ferocious winds at times, particularly at night to the point that they sometimes would make it difficult to sleep due to the noise. One afternoon a huge gust of wind flipped over a full size ping pong table located on the side of the house!

Mom & Daughter Birthday Celebration @ Hula Hula Ranch

A long over due review for our December 2021 stay. The pictures does not tell the whole story of this Kohala Ranch gem. 9 ladies came together to with 2 of them a mother/daughter celebrating a 60th and 82 birthday and to celebrate our friendship. First the host Paul: most polite, courteous and accommodating host I have worked with through VRBO, thank you. Property Manager: John, thank you is not enough. Very personable, helpful and able to assist as needed, and made check in/out process very easy. This spacious home is in a quiet gated community and has all the amenities and essentials for the perfect Hawaiian vacation. It is evident that a lot of care and consideration is put into making this home what it is for guests. Views of the Pacific Ocean, hearing whales and seeing the sunset from the large backyard and pool area a few highlights from our stay. Each of the ladies raved about their rooms and the overall accommodation. Only (-) experience was with one of the security guards in the gate house must have been having a bad day as she was less than courteous. Not the owners fault as they were amazing. It was the perfect vacation spot and I would definitely recommend it and would definitely stay there again.

Perfect Plus!

It was better than advertised and perfect for our group! The kitchen is big enough for several of us to be working at the same time. The bedrooms are large, each with a beautiful view and an adjoining bathroom. The ocean view is spectacular and the sunsets unbelievable. We all highly recommend this property!!

Magical stay on the Big Island

The property was everything my family needed. The layout was perfect for my three adult children and their spouses plus my two grandchildren. There was plenty of room to interact as a family or find a quiet spot to enjoy the sun and read a book. The bathrooms attached to each bedroom were spacious and clean. The first couple of days we were greeted by sea to sea rainbows that seemed to say aloha to us on our arrival. The pool was very clean and is actually much bigger than the pictures on the site show. My grandchildren loved the hot tub. There is no shortage of beach towels, pool toys, adult toys and games, childrens toys, chairs , snorkels and goggles, boogie boards etc for use at the many beaches nearby. The kitchen was well adorned with all the pots and pans , spices and cooking essentials you need. The location of the home was perfect for the best weather on the island and close enough to the tourist locations that they were easy to get to. Overall the place was heavenly.

Hawaii Heaven

Hula Hula Ranch is a lovely vacation home for a family of varying ages. Pool, games including Corn Hole, Ping Pong plus large TV's for sports made it the ideal place for all ages. Additionally, the 2 and a half refrigerators, wine cooler and ice machine made feeding a crowd without going to the store constantly was a plus. Only negative comments, the cleaning between groups could have been a lot better: grill was filthy, floor needed better mopping, cabinets and countertops all sticky. Although not close to shopping, restaurants and supplies, there are beautiful beaches very near by...and the best seafood and Poke at Hale l'a Da Fish House on Kohala Coast. All and all a very good choice for our family.

Most amazing vacation!

The Hula Hula Ranch is the perfect property for large groups! Our group of 10 adults and 5 children was very comfortable. Each family had their own bedroom/bathroom. The property is clean, well equipped and there are many toys and activities to keep the children entertained. The pool is splendid! But, our absolute favorite part, was enjoying meals together outside on the lanai. Sitting together for dinner while watching the most beautiful sunsets is something we’ll all remember. The property manager and owners are very responsive and a pleasure to work with. We cannot wait to come back! If you are looking for a group/family friendly place, this is it! So much more amazing in person. Thank you for a memorable stay!

Beautiful retreat

What a beautiful property and house! The views and sunsets from the patio were amazing. The house had an expansive layout to easily accommodate our large group. The wireless internet worked smoothly allowing me to work remotely while there. I highly recommend this house to others.

Your own little resort

If you’re thinking of a vacation in Hawaii but don’t want to stay at an over crowded resort, then Hula Ranch is the PERFECT place. Every room is basically it’s own suite & theirs a little Ohana (studio) that was suitable for my sisters family of 3. The pool was absolutely perfect for the kids, they basically swam all day & night. Bbqing while watching the sunset was my favorite part, the sunsets in Kohala can’t be beat! The property manager, John was so accommodating and made our vacation so enjoyable. My family and I can’t wait to go back ☺️

Gorgeous luxurious Home with stellar sunsets

The home, location, and appointments are excellent. Only drawback is it really needs the air conditioning system to work, which at present it’s not. In fairness to the wonderful owner, he does state in the listing there’s no AC, but even with fans & open windows it was too hot for comfort at night. We’ll def go back once they sort out the AC problem.

The perfect place

This property was not only beautiful but fit our party of 12 perfectly. The description online does not do the place justice. Everything you could need was provided aside from groceries; beach towels and chairs, pool floats and noodles, shampoo/conditioner, laundry soap, etc. The house and grounds were very clean and well-maintained.Instructions for access to the property were detailed and easy to follow and the few questions we had during our stay were quickly answered with a phone call to the property manager. Though the house is about 40 minutes from Kona, we didn't mind the drive through beautiful fields of lava rock there and back. The view from the back of the home is spectacular, and though not on the beach, it isn't that far away to white or black sands. A handy list of local beaches, activities, must-see sites and other recommendations was waiting on the entry hall table. For the faint of heart, there are mice around that will sometimes get inside. They are quickly attracted to sticky traps located throughout the house and can be easily dispatched. We would stay here again in a minute. Thanks for a fabulous holiday!

Stunningly beautiful

Great house for our Family Vacation of 16 adults & 1 child! It was a welcoming home, the rooms are beautifully decorated & the layout was just perfect for our group, everyone had their own bathroom. The pool was fun at the end of the day. The host, property manager, pool guy, & gardener were very nice & accommodating. The views of the sunsets are spectacular, and the semi-secluded location away from the crowds was worth the extra driving. We will definitely book this house again, the next time we go to Hawaii!!

Outstanding Home in Perfect Location

Hula Hula Ranch was a key part to our dream vacation with extended family. Every room is equally comfortable with gorgeous ocean views, so we did not need to pick and choose between who got the "best" rooms. Kohala Ranch is a working ranch, with livestock roaming throughout. We love it. The home is on 3 acres and is well-situated for privacy, which we appreciated. Our 3, 6 and 10 year old kids were comfortable in the kids' bedroom that is well-equipped with kid-friendly beds, seating, TV and toys. We put our toddler in a float suit and set our chairs by the pool so we didn't have to worry too much as he was running around and in and out of the water. Grandma is in a wheelchair and had no problem navigating the main house. The incredibly decadent master bath tub had steps so she opted to use the shower, and there is one small step to get into the Ohana, but that did not interfere with her enjoyment of the home. Cafe Pesto in Kawaihae is a convenient and delicious place for take-out orders when we wanted to skip cooking but enjoy the view from the outdoor dining table at the house. The kids were enamored with the Hawaiian Ice shop next door. The worst part about this home is having to leave. Our toddler cried on the way to the airport that he wanted "to stay in MY HAWAII HOUSE!" We were right there with him. We highly recommend Hula Hula Ranch for groups of all ages. It will be our first choice when we come back to the Big Island!

Exceptional location - exquisite sunsets

We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary with our children, their spouses, and four teenage grandsons. Everyone was delighted with this beautiful home, its location, and its amenities. We ate our meals on the spacious lanai overlooking the pool and the ocean. Each room is carefully and tastefully decorated; each bed has the most comfortable mattress imaginable, and each bedroom had its own full bath. The location is excellent for beaches and day trips. No matter how much clothing you bring the closets would never fill up. The owners and their property manager were most accommodating. It is reasonably priced; one could not book five rooms at a luxury hotel for the price of this home's rental.

Great Home for Family Vacation!

Perfect home for a family vacation! We rented the home with another family for our kids' winter break. We had 4 adults and 4 preteen kids. The home's layout was ideal for a large group and allowed everyone to have their own space. The kids were in the pool daily, and the adults enjoyed the hot tub. The home is beautifully decorated and furnished and the kitchen and outdoor grill were perfect for cooking large family dinners. When I asked my kids what is the first thing that comes to mind when they think back on our trip, they both said the house. The location was great for us allowing easy access to beaches, horseback riding, and day trips. The owners, Paul and Delayne, were so helpful with suggestions on activities and restaurants and responded to our questions almost immediately. You will not be disappointed with this rental. If we visit the Big Island again, the Hula Hula Ranch will be our first choice for accommodations.

My husband & I fell in love with the Hula Hula Ranch when taking a tour around the island. We were on our way from our favorite beach, the Mauna Kea, to ride horses for my daughter's 3rd birthday. We saw the beautiful entrance and homes at the Kohala Ranch community and immediately knew it was a perfect fit. Complete privacy with spectacular views that is 8 min to our favorite beach and yet has a serene feel. We have a lot of friends and family from all over the world and this house offers enough space where everyone can get together under one roof while still having their own private rooms and bathrooms.

Incredible views with spacious floor plan. Plenty of room for family and friends. 'We loved the open indoor/outdoor features and large rooms with high ceilings' The owners enjoy the large rooms and high ceilings. The close proximity to beaches such as Muana Kea and Hapuna was a big consideration for the owners. They love to dine at the Kohala Coast Resorts and had stayed in many of them. Finding a home so close to the many amenities of resorts in a gated community with such incredible views and privacy is what helped them choose this home at Kohala Ranch.
