About this property
The Alder Hideout - Modern Tiny Home
Summary:
The Alder Hideout is a small, thoughtfully designed retreat tucked into a peaceful alder grove. Created for slowing down and reconnecting with nature, it features a minimalist design, heated floors, and large windows framing the forest. The cabin is partially off-grid, offering simple comforts while encouraging a slower, more nature-connected experience. Compact but open, it feels calm and expansive.
The Space:
Nestled within the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Area, the Alder Hideout is a small, design-forward cabin surrounded by forest. It was created as a place to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with nature.
Simple in form and intentional in every detail, the cabin opens to the quiet rhythm of the woods. Guests often spend mornings with coffee by the window, afternoons exploring nearby trails, and evenings by the fire beneath the trees.

Guest Access:
The Alder Hideout is one of a few special structures on the property, each thoughtfully designed with private outdoor spaces for you to enjoy. While you'll find plenty of peace here, if you're looking for complete isolation, this might not be the perfect fit.
Feel free to explore the property on foot, just kindly respect the space around the other buildings, which may have guests staying in them. We ask that everyone does their part to keep things respectful and cozy for all.
The Neighborhood:
Our property sits in a quiet pocket of the Columbia River Gorge, surrounded by forest, fresh air, and some of the most iconic scenery in the Pacific Northwest. Guests love how peaceful the setting feels and how close it is to the waterfalls, trails, and overlooks that make this area so special. The property is just outside Washougal, which is known as the western gateway to the Gorge. From here, you can reach many of the famous waterfall trails in under thirty minutes, including Latourell Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Wahkeena Falls. Multnomah Falls, the most photographed waterfall in the region, is also within an easy drive. Downtown Washougal and neighboring Camas offer coffee shops, restaurants, a seasonal farmers market, and well stocked grocery options. For a slower day, visitors enjoy walking the riverfront, exploring local shops, or spending time at the nearby Cottonwood Beach. Most guests come for the access to nature. The trail network around Cape Horn is especially loved for its sweeping views of the river and cliffs, and it starts close to the cabin. Wildlife sightings are common and the night skies are usually very clear. Overall, the Alder Hideout offers a calm place to return to after days spent exploring the Gorge, with the comfort of being close to both quiet landscapes and small town conveniences.
Getting Around:
A car is recommended for exploring the Gorge, though some of the best scenery is walkable from the Hideout. The Cape Horn trailhead is an easy walk from the property, giving you direct access to panoramic viewpoints and lush forest paths. Waterfall hikes, scenic pullouts, and the drive toward White Salmon are all close by, offering plenty to explore.
Other Things to Note:
- As part of the off-grid design, the Hideout uses a state-of-the-art incineration toilet. Instead of flushing with water, everything is reduced to clean ash in a sealed chamber. It’s hygienic, odorless, and easy to use, please make sure you are comfortable trying something a little different before booking.
- Cell phone service is very limited on the property, so we like to take this as an opportunity to disconnect!
- There is however internet access with WIFI, but please, keep the usage to a minimum as the bandwidth is limited and is shared by the whole property. We ask guests not to stream video.
- The kitchenette is a very modest setup, with limited options so we suggest planning ahead if you intend to cook in the space. Reach out and let us know if you'd like an extensive list of what we have in the kitchenette.
- We ask that no more than the number of people listed on your reservation, be in the Hideout or on the property.
- We do not permit professional photography or video without prior approval.
- Due to the remote location of this space power outages may occur a couple times a year. They are typically short, but we do have a generator on the property that we can setup in case of an outage.
- Lastly, we do have a camera that is aimed at the driveway so we can monitor the coming and going of vehicles for safety reasons.
Interaction with Guests:
We truly enjoy hosting and want to make sure you have absolutely everything you need for a restful stay in The Hideout. We value your comfort and privacy, and while we won't intrude, we do appreciate some two-way communication to ensure you're settled and have no questions. Your comfort is important to us, so please don't hesitate to let us know if you have any questions or notice anything that needs attention. We pride ourselves on being super responsive and are always happy to assist you in any way we can.
