About the host
Hosted by Elisha Szczerbinski
Hvar Away founders Elisha & Matt moved to Hvar in 2020, having visited the island only once before. They set out to build a life on this small island by helping others experience its magic. Today, their belief is that the best way of discovering special places is through those who call it home.
Why they chose this property
Pine View Bay is a private villa located in the vicinity of Maslina Resort, two kilometres west from the ancient town of Stari Grad, whose labyrinth of cobbled streets and excellent shops, restaurants, and bars are well worth exploring.
Stari Grad is the oldest town on Hvar and one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe, founded by Greek colonists from Paros in 384 BC. Set deep within a sheltered bay on the island’s northern side, Stari Grad has long been shaped by agriculture, trade, and fishing. Its compact historic core is a tangle of narrow stone streets, small squares, and understated palazzos that reflect centuries of layered history, from Greek and Roman foundations to Venetian influences. Stari Grad has the relaxed air of a place that is comfortably lived-in, with a quiet confidence born from centuries of continuity. Everyday life carries on alongside the history here – market stalls set up beneath Renaissance façades, locals chatting over coffee in squares laid out by ancient Greeks – as if residing in a 2,400-year-old town is simply the norm.
This ancient town is an ideal base for exploring both culture and landscape. A UNESCO-listed heritage site, the Stari Grad Plain, begins just outside town, offering flat walking and cycling routes through vineyards, olive groves, and ancient dry-stone walls. Beaches such as Maslinica, Lanterna, and Bonj are within walking distance with many more in the underrated Stari Grad peninsula within reach by taxi boats. The town’s dining scene favours substance over spectacle, with family-run konobas and fish restaurants passed down over generations. Stari Grad is located next to the ferry port, making arrivals from Split that bit more straightforward.
