About the host
Hosted by Patrick
I’m a Vermont-based musician, educator, and host who loves creating spaces where people can slow down, rest, and feel at home. I care deeply about preserving older buildings and the stories they carry, and this historic Victorian home is especially meaningful to me because I grew up here. Life eventually led me to Newbury, Vermont, and as my mother got older she asked me to take over caring for the rentals, a role I happily embraced. Because I live about two hours away with my family, a trusted friend and his family live on the ground floor and serve as the caretaker and property manager, helping ensure the home is well cared for and guests are supported during their stay. Hosting gives me the chance to share a small piece of the Northeast Kingdom with travelers from all walks of life — whether you’re here for outdoor adventure, remote work, or simply a quiet place to recharge.
Why they chose this property
Canaan sits at a unique crossroads where Vermont, New Hampshire, and Canada meet, and that blend of cultures and landscapes gives the area a special character. The pace is slower here — quiet streets, big skies, and easy access to mountains, lakes, trails, and back roads. I love how peaceful it feels while still being connected to the wider region. It’s a place where people come to breathe a little deeper and enjoy the outdoors in every season.
What makes this property unique
This Victorian home was built in 1875 by a doctor who used it as his summer residence and place of practice, returning to Boston each winter when the seasons changed. During that time, the house also served as a gathering space for wakes and funerals, quietly weaving itself into the history of the surrounding community.
Today, the home has been thoughtfully reimagined into four separate apartments that honor its past while offering modern comfort. Original architectural details, warm woodwork, and the distinctive third-story turret — with views that stretch all the way into Canada — give the property a sense of character that’s hard to replicate. Staying here feels less like renting an apartment and more like becoming part of a living piece of Northeast Kingdom history.
