About the host
Hosted by Laura K. Benton
Mountain Adventure Retreats was founded on a deep-rooted passion for the San Juan Mountains and a shared commitment to excellence in hospitality and property care. The venture began in 2013, sparked by Laura’s long-standing love for Ouray County. A lifelong Coloradan who first discovered the Ridgway and Ouray area in 2001, Laura brought with her an extensive background in business, marketing, and travel management. Her years of experience in the ski and property management industries across North America’s premier destinations provided the foundation for a company built on community and exceptional service.
In 2020, the team expanded when Steve moved from Dallas to join Laura in Ouray County. Steve’s arrival marked the beginning of a new chapter for the company, bringing forty-three years of high-level construction management experience to the team. Having served as Vice President for some of the nation’s top General Contractors, he integrated professional expertise in budgeting, procurement, and project oversight into the company’s property maintenance and caretaking operations. His own connection to the state dates back to 1993, when participating in Ride the Rockies ignited a lifelong passion for Colorado’s dramatic landscapes.
Today, Laura and Steve work side-by-side to lead a dedicated team of professionals focused on delivering top-tier property care. When they aren't overseeing the finer details of a guest's stay or maintaining local residences, they are often found embracing the outdoors together. Whether they are cycling, skiing, hiking, or fishing, they remain inspired by the ever-changing seasons and the rugged beauty of the San Juan Mountains.
Why they chose this property
We chose this location because it puts you at the absolute heart of the Ouray experience. Living and working on the Western Slope, we’ve always been drawn to the unique energy of Main Street, where the town’s historic charm meets the rugged spirit of the San Juan Mountains.
Being situated right on the main thoroughfare means you are just steps away from Ouray's best local shops and celebrated dining. Whether you are looking for a morning coffee or a post-hike dinner, everything is within a short stroll.
But the real magic is the proximity to the peaks. We wanted a place where you could look up and see the Amphitheater rock formations towering over the rooftops. This neighborhood serves as the perfect basecamp for the outdoor activities we love—from ice climbing and backcountry exploring to soaking in the nearby hot springs. It’s a spot that truly captures the "Switzerland of America" lifestyle we are so proud to share.
What makes this property unique
The Amphitheater Suite stands out in Ouray primarily because it balances historic preservation with high-end, modern functionality in a way few other local rentals do. While many properties in the area lean into a rustic "cabin" aesthetic, this suite offers a sophisticated, urban-mountain sanctuary.
Historic Architecture meets Modern Luxury
The property is housed in a beautifully restored historic bank building. While it retains the character of 600 Main St., the interior has been completely reimagined with a chef-grade kitchen and luxury walk-in showers that you typically only find in new, custom-built homes.
Unrivaled Rooftop Access
The 360-degree rooftop view is a massive differentiator. In a town tucked deep into a narrow canyon, having a private vantage point to see the entire mountain skyline—including the suite’s namesake rock formations—is a rare amenity that provides a perspective most visitors never get to see.
The True "Walkable" Experience
While many lodges are located on the perimeter of town or require a drive to get to the trailhead, this property sits directly on Main Street. You have the unique advantage of being:
Steps from the action: You can walk to the best dining and local boutiques without worrying about parking.
Trail-adjacent: You are positioned perfectly to transition from a luxury indoor environment to the rugged outdoor trails or the Ice Park in minutes.
Intimate Scale for Large Hosting
Despite being a one-bedroom sanctuary, the inclusion of a dining table for twelve makes it uniquely suited for hosting. It serves as a premier "home base" where guests can retreat for privacy but still host a gathering or a catered meal in a professional-level kitchen.
