About this property
Sommerfrische Tschengls
The seasonal move from the city to the countryside was once known as a “summer retreat.” This so-called “recreational stay” for city dwellers during the summer emerged in the 19th century. Those who did not own a summer home would stay in inns and, increasingly, in private accommodation. Thus, summer retreats and the early days of tourism are closely linked—even in South Tyrol.
In our house in Tschengls, there are documents and letters that show just how much German guests enjoyed the simple life in this small village in the Middle Vinschgau and their stay with the owners of the time—so much so that they were happy to return every year. That was motivation and confirmation enough for us to once again make this house available to guests who want to book more than just a holiday in South Tyrol. A temporary home away from home, a summer retreat in South Tyrol, in a small village, in a culturally rich valley. Our goal was to make it possible for guests to relocate their living and working lives to the countryside, whether for a short or long stay.
As lovers of historic architecture, my husband and I have tried to preserve this stone house—typical of the valley—as authentically as possible. In some areas of the house, we therefore exposed the stone walls both inside and out, revealed the old wooden beams, and “merely” renovated the wooden staircase and floors. Special attention should be paid to the panelled living room, which we’ve furnished as a small lounge for cosy get-togethers, while the adjoining room—once a bedroom—now serves as a bright dining room. As we explored the house in its original state, the paintings and colour elements inspired us so much that we couldn’t bring ourselves to completely paint over all the walls. And when a master glassmaker told us about the old hand-blown windows in the house, we painstakingly restored the frames and preserved the windows.
Those who spend some time here can experience the history and culture of South Tyrol first-hand while still enjoying a comfortable holiday in a temporary home of their own. Go buy fresh rolls at the village’s organic supermarket in the morning and have breakfast on the garden terrace, or spend an evening at the castle inn listening to stories about the region, its people, and life in general. The short path through the meadows to the little Ottilia Church, nestled among old, mature trees, not only opens your eyes to what truly matters but also inspires through the simplicity of things—when “less” becomes an immeasurable “more.” We look forward to your visit. Manuela and Marc
