Whether in the days of the Vikings or the dukes: The region around the Schlei, a Baltic Sea fjord, has always been the cultural centre of Northern Europe. Today, numerous world-class museums, historic churches, and manor houses invite you on a journey through history.
The cultural “capital” of the region is Schleswig, located at the western end of the Schlei. Among the outstanding sights in Schleswig is Gottorf Castle with its State Museum, the Baroque garden, and the reconstructed Gottorf "Globus." The Haithabu Viking Museum is known both nationally and internationally for its exhibition and the reconstructed Viking settlement. And the Bordesholm Winged Altar by woodcarver Hans Brüggemann in the imposing St. Petri Cathedral in Schleswig is one of the most renowned cultural monuments in northern Germany.
Visitors to Schleswig can also experience cultural history up close in the fishing village of Holm, around the Rathausmarkt, and at the City Museum.

At the heart of this former Viking land lies the Schlei—at 43 kilometres, Schleswig-Holstein’s longest Baltic Sea fjord.
The landscape around the Schlei is characterised by rolling hills, lush green forests and pastures, picturesque villages and stately estates, endless sandy beaches and romantic swimming coves—and in the spring, the bright yellow of the rapeseed fields.
