About this property
Central to Beaufort, HHI, birding refuges, Parris Island. Pet & family friendly.
Attending Parris Island graduation? Looking for a home base for your Lowcountry getaway? Want to bring Fido along?
Explore one of the most beautiful areas in South Carolina from pet-friendly, accessible Broadview Cottage.
Great central location for exploring or birding the SC Lowcountry: easy access to National Wildlife Refuges, ACE Basin, and golf courses; approximately 30-45 minutes from Bluffton, Hilton Head, Beaufort, and Parris Island; 50 minutes from Savannah, just a hop-and-skip from I-95.
Broadview Cottage nestles in a unique community just 5 miles off I-95 (SC exit 28, Coosawhatchie). Palm Key is a quiet, casual gathering of cottages which invites the visitor to enjoy the lovely peace of the woods, pond, and Broad River marshes. Our cottage offers visitors the opportunity to escape into nature, to leave the bustling world behind--while being conveniently located for visits to nearby Parris Island, beaches, golf courses, and shopping in Beaufort, Bluffton, Hilton Head, and Savannah.
Entertainment nearby or on site:
* Take day trips to nearby travel destinations: Beaufort, Bluffton, Hilton Head, Hunting Island, Parris Island, the Penn Center, Savannah, and more (you’ll find brochures at the cottage, or, on I-95, stop at the SC Welcome Center or Exit 33’s Frampton Visitor’s Center for information)
* Golf at Hilton Head and other courses
* Bring your kayaks to enjoy the nearby Broad River or any of the other nearby salt creeks and black water rivers.
*Bring your bikes; the neighborhood is bike-and-kid friendly.
*Visit the “trestle road,” a former railroad bed (now just gravel) that juts out across the marsh and ends at the Broad River
* Bring your fishing pole! Fish in the pond or at the nearby trestle pier.
* Wander along the marsh and in Palm Key’s Mystical Park with oyster-shell labyrinth
* Bird along the marsh and nearby marsh islands—this area has around 250 species to be seen, depending on time of year—for example, painted buntings, pine warblers, wood storks, eagles, osprey, egrets, pelicans, and screech owls.
* Bring your camera and enjoy the outdoors.
Broadview Cottage was designed to encourage visitors to look out—a wide expanse of windows in each room gives onto marsh views, with live oaks covered in Spanish moss, to the sun rising over the Broad River, to wood storks soaring.
Our wide porch invites you to relax with a book in the swing or chat with friends over drinks. Inside, the open floor plan encourages conversation, relaxation, and visiting.

About the host
Hosted by April Childress

April and Jody are educators and nature-lovers, pet-lovers, kayakers, travelers, neophyte birders, gardeners, caregivers, and husband and wife. In the mountains where we live full time, we generate our own power with solar panels and live off-the-grid, enjoy bluegrass music, art classes, and living in the woods. Our cat Jasper, whom we found on a rainy, cold day at a boat landing in the Lowcountry, loves traveling and road trips. He often visits Broadview with us.
We first came to Palm Key in 2004 to teach a workshop for Jasper County middle school teachers that was being held on site--and before we left that weekend, we knew we had to come back! We fell in love with the lowcountry, the marsh, and this community, which was founded to offer folks the opportunity to breathe fresh air, explore nature, create, learn, teach, and grow. Palm Key began to be a regular getaway for us, and we began learn about lowcountry marshes, blackwater swamps, and the rich history of the area. We’ve been charmed by the people we’ve met, the little towns we’ve visited, and the connections to the past, back to the early 1700's in some places. The more we learned and saw, the more we wanted to explore and know!

Why they chose this property
Then, in 2012, we had the opportunity to purchase our cottage and make ourselves and our families a second home here. Its location is delightful--we named the cottage Broadview because it overlooks the marshes of the Broad River, and the view itself is wide and open from our porch. We can sit in the swing with a cup of coffee and just enjoy the view. While the house is modest in size and outward appearance, it lent itself to making a comfortable home for us and our extended family. We've nested in it with family antiques and neat finds from local shops that reflect our interests.
We appreciate the open floor plan and the fact that the house is handicap-able and all on one level. That way we can enjoy it for many years to come. And we can see the marsh from everywhere in the house--we have views of the Broad River from our kitchen, dining area, living area, bedrooms, and porch. Lucy is quite at home here and frequently joins us when we come to stay a while.
We come here intermittently, just to hang out sometimes, or to work as kayak instructors for LifeTides Institute, a non-profit on site that hosts programs for the international educational organization Road Scholar. If you’re interested in learning about them, we teach Kayak the Lowcountry (#12440) and Kayak More of the Lowcountry (#21344), which you can find at roadscholar.org. Palm Key is the perfect place to host a group of folks interested in adventure, nature, and history, and we've met a lot of great people who have returned again and again!

What makes this property unique
The neighborhood is quiet, and welcoming, and lovely--folks here are used to seeing visitors and making them feel at home. Pets on leashes are welcomed by all. We enjoy the fact that there's no light pollution, so we see constellations and moonrises over the marsh. This sight alone is rare to city-dwellers!
It makes us happy to share our cottage. We've furnished it in an authentic way--it's not 'beachy-themed,' or 'vacation-property' feeling. It's got enough reading lights to see by, and really comfortable chairs that are a dream to sit in and pretty to look at. You can put your feet up and stay a while!
And we'd like to share it with you! We’ve hosted bridge-players, birders, families who are celebrating weddings, anniversaries, or graduation at Parris Island, honeymooners, caregivers, kayakers, veterans, all sorts of folks with all sorts of interests.
Here’s hoping that you can find what you’re looking for in your visit with us at Broadview Cottage, whether it be peace and quiet or a jumping-off place for lots of exploration.
