Perfect for peace-seekers, located on the Elbe Cycle Route amidst meadows and sheep. Perfectly situated between Hamburg and St. Peter-Ording. A cozy, authentic retreat for your North German getaway!
The Space:
Welcome to our lovingly renovated thatched cottage right on the dike, nestled between scenic fields and the Elbe marshes.
The 80 sqm cottage offers a cozy living room on the ground floor with a Smart TV (Netflix etc.), a piano, and a dining area with chairs and a Tripp Trapp. It also features a bedroom with a comfortable 180cm box-spring bed, a kitchen with a dining table and wood-burning stove, and a small bathroom with a shower.
A narrow staircase leads to the upper floor, where you’ll find a second bedroom with a 160cm double bed and a spacious built-in wardrobe. There is also a cozy retreat with a reading nook, a footstool, and toys (Brio train set, books, board games) overlooking the dike and the sheep.
Through the traditional "Klönschnack" door in the kitchen, you can access the covered, wind-protected terrace, complete with a dining table, garden bench, chairs, and a gas grill for relaxed BBQ evenings. A small private garden also belongs to the house.
Practical Amenities:
Annex: A spacious outbuilding where you can store bicycles and strollers.
Parking: Two generous parking spaces right next to the house.
Public Transport: A bus stop is right in front of the house (15 min to Elmshorn, then 20 min by train to Hamburg).
Pets: One dog is very welcome. If traveling with two dogs, please message me with the breed info.
Check-in: Flexible self-check-in from 3:00 PM.
Location: Reach Hamburg in 20 min or St. Peter-Ording in 1.5 hours by car.
Guest Access:
You have the house and the garden all to yourself.
The Neighborhood:
Welcome to the Elbe marshes!
The villages of Seester and Seestermühe are situated along the dike in the picturesque Elbe marshes. Here, you'll find numerous historic thatched houses, dikes, plenty of sheep, apple orchards, and of course, the Elbe and Krückau rivers.
Right next to the house lies Kronsnest, the smallest ferry in the world. During the season, you can cross the Krückau to Neuendorf by bike—it’s hand-operated! :)
Many small farm shops supply you with essentials: fresh eggs, apples from local growers, seasonal vegetables, pure apple juices, and what are arguably the tastiest potatoes in Germany.
In Seestermühe, Café Viehwaage offers breakfast and delicious cakes. They also host regular events like whisky tastings, with dinner served every Tuesday and Sunday. During the season, the beer garden on Dorfstraße in Seestermühe is the perfect spot for fish rolls, snacks, and a chat with the locals.
The historic Linden Avenue with its tea pavilion (Grafschaft Seestermühe) is well worth a visit and can be easily explored on foot from the house.
Experience the peace, the beauty of the area, and the vastness of the landscape. You will love it!
Getting Around:
The villages are located directly on the Elbe Cycle Route (Elberadweg). By bike, you can ride along the dike all the way from Hamburg through the Elbe marshes to the North Sea.
From the accommodation, a scenic route takes you over the Krückau barrage and along the dike—passing meadows filled with sheep, horses, wild geese, and cows—to Kollmar. There, you will find a swimming beach, a natural children's playground, and various dining options.
If you are looking for a bit more hustle and bustle, Hamburg-Altona is only about 30 minutes away by car. The North Sea highlights, St. Peter-Ording and Büsum, are also easily reachable within 1 to 1.5 hours.
Other Things to Note:
Bed linen and an initial set of towels are included.
This is a historic thatched house with original walls, windows, and "Klönschnack" doors. Sheep graze directly on the adjacent dike. Please be aware that this is not a modern new build. Not all walls are perfectly straight, a window might stick occasionally, and you might even find a bit of sheep's wool caught on the thatch. :)
Please note that the bathroom retains its original size and is quite small. The shower is not barrier-free. Important for small children and the elderly: The staircase to the upper floor is narrow and quite steep.
There is a bus stop next to the house, with a bus running once every hour toward Elmshorn.
Due to the density of thatched-roof houses, all types of fireworks are officially prohibited throughout Seester and Seestermühe on New Year's Eve.
Interaction with Guests:
If you have any questions before or during your stay, I’m always happy to help. We live in the neighborhood and can be on-site quickly if needed.
