Red River Gorge

This property was perfect! It was close to the activities we had planned. It was in a low traffic area and had all of the amenities we wanted. We enjoyed the hot tub, the fire pit and using the back deck to grill dinner. It was a beautiful and well kept property and all 5 of us would highly recommend!

Relaxing and convenient

Our family of five had a great stay. Close to popular rock climbing destinations such as Bald Rock, and an easy drive to everything around the RRG. I think what makes this property special is that the owners (whom we met on an evening walk) live down the street and take a personal interest in their properties and guests. Thanks!

Wonderful Stay with Plenty of Space and Things To Do Nearby

We had a wonderful stay at James and Elizabeth’s cabin! We wanted to stay close enough to Red River Gorge, but away from all the hustle and bustle and the cabin’s location was perfect. We were within 15-30 minutes driving from all the RRG activities we wanted to do. The cabin is very well maintained, clean, cozy and has everything you may need: fully equipped kitchen, plenty of towels, bedding, etc. We loved that the cabin had a spacious grass yard for the kids to run around. The owner was even kind enough to let our kids fish in a pond on his property. The hosts are kind and gracious people, we highly recommend their property and hope to be back!

We had a lovely stay. It was a bit difficult to find so refer to written directions (not GPS, no carrier service). Arrive when it is light! Very remote (which has it's pluses). We had three adults, but a family of up to 7 could easily fit. The whirlpool was lovely and condiments in fridge and coffee. We couldn't figure out the fireplace and the outdoor shower wasn't set up. Bring your own firewood if you want to use the firepit (we did not). In the area be sure to check out the sky lift, natural bridge, Chimney top hike, Zipline adventure. We tried an 8.5 mi kayak down river which was rougher than expected (each tipped over in currents), but we did it! Red River Rockhouse was a great place to eat! Not a lot of shopping nearby. Lovely Catholic church nearby. Great girls get away! thank you!

Seclusion in the Sticks

This cabin was perfect for what we needed!!!! We absolutely loved the huge yard, it gave us so much room to play with the kids! The outdoor shower was great for the hot days, the fire pit was perfect for the cooler evenings. We never even turned the tv on! We also enjoyed the apple tree and were able to bake dessert. Great experience, would do it again! Nate and Molly McKean

Quiet private retreat

30 minutes from major hiking in Red River Gorge. No other houses or Cabins in sight. There are mice in the house, and that ought to be addressed. We saw one behind the coffee pot on the kitchen counter our final morning. Everything else was perfect for our needs with parents and two teenagers.

Peaceful

The hubs and I love this place. He especially loved it. Said it’s the best place we’ve stayed in all our travels. The place is very well maintained. All of our needs were met for a 5 day stay. We didn’t need anything beyond food. There were even condiments in the fridge and a gas grill in the back. The hot tub is clean and private. The whole place is very private and off the beaten path, tho close to all of the things and destinations. The fire pit is overlooking a big chunk of property and is the perfect place to sit in the morning and the evening with a cup of coffee to watch the wild turkeys down the hill. We will be back. The hubs wants to buy the place and move in. :)

Cozy Cabin Getaway

This was an ideal (and much needed) weekend retreat spot for myself and my two closest friends. It is just far enough out that light pollution is minimal, but there are a few sounds from the road nearby during the day. At night, sitting in the hot tub and looking up at the stars, it really feels like you're separated from the rest of the world. We could even see parts of the milky way galaxy with the naked eye which was really neat! The cabin was clean, well decorated, and cozy - especially with a fire going. The beds were firm and warm as well, which was a big plus for me. Two things to note: bring firewood, and, if you're going to do any cooking that involves cutting meat or chopping root vegetables, bring your own knives! All of us forgot to do so, and ended up with some blisters from trying to slice up a slab bacon in the morning and a leg of lamb at night.

This property would be fine for adults or teens with no mobility issues. There’s no railing on the front or back steps. It was very difficult for my sister to navigate. The bathroom is rather small.

About the host

Hosted by James and Elizabeth Roach

Host profile image
James and Libby Roach. We're both the youngest of large families. We both grew up in
Beattyville and chose to raise our family here. We've been married for 25 years and have two daughters, 23 and 20. I am an elected official(Property Valuation Administrator) in Lee County and James works in the construction business. We love the outdoors and spending time with family and friends.

Why they chose this property

We bought this 40 acre property because it is located close to our home. This 3rd generation family farm had been carefully cared for by our neighbor 'Bill' who lived a long life there. When he passed away in 2009, we purchased it from his family. We think of the property as 'Bill's Place', therefore we named it that. Bill was a real character in our small town and will not be easily forgotten. It didn't take long to realize how peaceful 'Bill's Place' was. We decided to remodel his home into the beautiful cabin it is today, and share it with others. The property is like many in our area. It was home to Bill's family where he and his siblings were raised by living off the land. There is evidence of the original homestead still there. The lawn has many fruit trees, planted by Bill. The barn wood on the walls of the upstairs in the cabin was taken from Bill's old barn. There is a picture of the barn hanging upstairs. We found heirloom, garden seeds in the barn from years ago. I was told by Bill's sister, Abby, that the rose in the front yard was brought from the original homestead and before that from another old homestead. She ask me to take care of her mother's rose. James and I feel like we are the caretakers of this wonderful property for now and will pass it on just as the family before us. The property's history shows it's self every time we are there. We feel honored be part of it.

What makes this property unique

Visiting 'Bill's Place' will be a peaceful getaway from the hustle of life. It will force you to slow down and enjoy nature while enjoying all the comforts of home. The area offers something for everyone. Many of our guests are here to visit family and friends for a homecoming. Many enjoy the Wooly Worm Festival held annually in October. If you love old cars, you'll want to visit Beattyville for car shows, street cruise-in and old engine and tractor shows. Lee County is known for horse riding, off road atv/jeep riding, world class rock climbing. Lee County is home to the Three Forks of the Kentucky River that offers boating and fishing. We are located near Natural Bridge State Park, Red River Gorge, Red River Gorge Zipline Adventures. We are within minutes of The Lee County Recreational Center that offers bowling, fitness center, pizza, etc.
Lee County has 1000's of acres of the Daniel Boone National Forest located here that offers hiking, bird watching, cycling, ect.
Lee County offers Beattyville Country Club that is a 9 hole golf course.
