About this property

Fairytale Renovated Cottage On Beautiful & Idyllic 60 Acre Perigord Noir Estate

Set in what guests describe as a 'Nature Lover's Paradise', part of Domaine de Pessel, this is an unusual little house with a fairytale look to it. Petit Pessel has even been described as a film set-like environment - guests have relished its secluded, beautiful setting and style, saying in their comments:
"The smaller cottage with its little tower and the castle-like windows……you just feel like you are in some part of the 'Lord of Rings' books in the Shire… expect a Hobbit to show up on your doorstep any moment."

Petit Pessel is a delightful one bedroomed cottage which has been modernised to a high standard, offering comfortable accommodation in a beautiful setting, surrounded by gardens and woodland with lovely views of the forest of Bessede and the hills of the region. It has the look of a 'Hansel & Gretel' house, and appeals to those seeking a natural retreat, still offering all conveniences.

There is a fitted kitchen with hob, small oven/microwave, fridge freezer, kettle, toaster and a full comprehensive range of utensils and equipment, including a basic larder of staples such as olive oil, vinegars, sea salt, pepper, herbs, and flour. We also offer a welcome pack containing bread, wine, eggs, butter, milk, orange juice, biscuits, fruit in season and other local treats.

Petit Pessel has an attractively furnished living room with leather sofas.

The first floor bedroom has a double bed and a full size single, with an adjoining modern shower room with glass shower enclosure, WC and basin.

Outside, there is a paved terrace furnished with table, chairs and parasol, and a lawned area for sunloungers, with lovely views of the surrounding trees and hills.

There is a utility room in the nearby barn, equipped with washing machine, tumble dryer, drying racks, iron and ironing board, and we provide washing powder/liquid, and fabric conditioner.

Our larger cottage, Grand Pessel, also listed here, which sleeps 5 people, shares the utility room, though both cottages are detached and retain their privacy.

Urval is our closest village, a five minute drive and a 20/25 minute walk, and has a bar/restaurant, 12th century church, lovely architecture, and a rare Four Banal or bread oven.

Siorac en Perigord, a village situated on the Dordogne river, is a 10 -15 minute drive away, and has all necessary amenities - Carrefour supermarket, ATM, pharmacy, bakery, hairdresser, Tabac, Post Office, doctor, Tourist office, several restaurants including pizza takeaway/delivery, and a weekly market.

Here you can also rent canoes and swim in the Dordogne, or visit the local château with its exhibition of culinary history.

The area offers easy access to many outdoor activities and pursuits, including golf, horse-riding, cycling, walking, and flying lessons or gliding - plus the wealth of cultural events, festivals and markets which take place locally during the summer months.

Additionally, this region is known as the cradle of prehistory, with a rich heritage of both prehistoric and historical sites to visit. Combined with the beauty of the architecture, the proximity of vineyards, the delicious local produce and frequent markets , the fertile valleys filled with tobacco, maize and sunflowers, and the delightful ambience of this prized area, this makes for a superb place to spend some refreshing, revitalizing time in a perfect setting with exceptional scenery and quality facilities for your holiday.

We are close to some of the most beautiful villages and towns in France - from medieval Sarlat (30 km) to La Roque Gageac, Domme, Castelnaud, Beynac, Molieres, and many other little gems we will share with you whilst you are with us.

For nature lovers

Historic house in a wonderful calm surrounding away from towns but short distances to the sights of Perigord. Hiking trail through the woods passes directly the cottage. Lovely and open minded hosts who gave us a very warm welcome and good hints to discover Perigord.

Charming gite in peaceful countryside

The owners, Alan and Christine, were very welcoming on arrival setting the tone for our stay. The property was spotlessly clean, and thoughtful details included such as wine, milk, butter, bread and orange juice, tea and coffee, and olive oil, garlic and herbs for cooking. Pessel is very peaceful and is surrounded by beautiful woodland, so perfect for relaxing and enjoying nature. We didn’t need to venture far from the gite to see pine martins, deer, hoopoe, black kites, fire crests, short toed eagles and too many species of butterfly to list. Alan and Christine were very helpful and charming and I wouldn’t hestitate to recommend Pessel to any nature lovers wanting to get away from it all.

A very nice, quiet retreat.

The property is in a fairly remote location relative to the nearest village of Urval, but if you’re looking for peace and quiet you definitely get that. There are other buildings around, the owners house and one other rental property but they are distant enough not to intrude on your privacy. The property was clean and tidy and well presented upon our arrival and was reasonably well equipped. However some of the items listed by home away, such as wi-if, tv, dvd, radio are actually only available upon direct request to the owners. This was not a major issue to us as we decided to do without them, with the exception of the wi-fi, but we think it should be more clearly explained on the home away website. One other point to mention is that the oven is actually only a worktop oven about the size of a small microwave. The owners were very friendly and helpful and very understanding when we got delayed on the day of our arrival. Our fault for travelling on the first Saturday of August. They were quite knowledgable about the local area and suggested several places to visit and also the best times to visit. We enjoy walking and there were numerous waymarked walks in the area for which maps and guides were available from the local tourist information offices. Overall we had a very pleasant and relaxing stay.

Pleasant Stay

Beautiful and tranquil location. Cottage was idyllic and very well equpped. The owners had thought of everything to make it a pleasant stay. The patio area was lovely as were the surroundings. Cottage was exceptionally clean and very comfortable. There is so such to do in the region and Urval is a great base for exploring the Dordogne.

Quel accueil ... so british :) Une superbe semaine... Nous vous recommandons le lieu. Lucie et Hervé

The cottage was lovely - we had a great time

During the summer 2015 we had a very pleasant stay in Petit Pessel, the little cottage of new owners Christine and Alan. The cottage was lovely and Christine and Alan, although just a few days owners of the cottages, went really out of their way to make our stay as pleasant as possible. Well that didn`t take much more than a good glass of wine and some jokes between the lot of us, we experienced it as a very friendly and relaxing time. The cottage had all we needed, and we can`t think of any improvements at the moment … we just loved and enjoyed the stay. The smaller cottage with its little tower and the castle-like windows……you just feel like you are in some part of the Lord of Rings books in the Shire…..you expect a Hobbit to show up on your doorstep any moment. Since you are out in the woods and greenery, you can find a place in the surroundings of the cottage either to be in the sun or in the shade….so you are never too hot or too cold. Around the cottage itself you can find quietness, all kind of small and bigger animals, so there is something to see every day. We have seen deer and lots of birds. By car you can drive easily to one of the little villages to have a nice meal, a drink on the terrace or visit one of the “brocante” to see if you can find any nice antiques. So if you would like to meet the locals, or some English speaking holiday guests…it’s just a drive around the corner. All in all the week we stayed was too short to really explore all the things you normally would like to explore…and even to get to know Christine and Alan some more. After a week of getting the rest we needed we had to go, but we still are in contact with Christine and Alan, and who knows…..maybe we will find ourselves out on the terrace of their lovely home some day, enjoying a nice glass of wine. Did you book your holiday with Christine and Alan? Make sure you say hi to them from us, thanks in advance! The above still does not describe our lovely stay accurately ….. how can you put a feeling in words….

Domaine de Pessel is the home of Christine and Alan; we’ve been married for almost 40 years, and have mainly lived in London, although we've always travelled a lot, and are confirmed Francophiles. We bought Domaine de Pessel in 2015, although we've spent a lot of time in France. Pessel has been offering vacation homes for many years, and we have inherited very happy guests.

Christine is an author, editor and leadership consultant; Alan has an engineering background and is a project manager and publisher. We both love wine and food, and enjoy the beautiful scenery and peace of our home in SW France, coupled with the ambience of our friendly local village and its delightful people. We're certainly learning a lot about estate management and country living, and relish our time here.

Why they chose this property

We knew Pessel was the place for us the very first time we visited, and as we had already driven thousand of kilometres and seen over 50 properties, we were confident it was the right choice.

The previous owner told us that she cried every time she had to leave, she loves Pessel so much – and we’re beginning to understand exactly what she meant …

We spend our time between the UK (where our children are based) and France, and want to continue the established tradition of offering our two lovely cottages and pigeonnier for rental to people who appreciate a high quality environment which is surrounded by unspoilt nature, yet close to all amenities, with a high standard of accommodation and comfort, in an area of outstanding cultural, artistic and historical interest.

What makes this property unique

Pessel is a 17th and 18th century estate, with over 60 acres of land - a wonderful environment with delightful gardens and lawns, with fields, meadows and forest making up the rest.

The estate has beauty, wildlife, stunning views, peace, and space. The buildings have been carefully renovated to retain their original features, whilst offering all modern conveniences and a quality of life which is irresistible. It's a place many people find themselves not wanting to leave, even after a few days, there's something special and almost magical about it, we've been told.

We see deer in the gardens, red squirrels in the trees, birds, bees, butterflies everywhere - there are bats at dusk, owls hooting in the evenings, wild thyme and mint growing in the grassy banks - and the clear air and no light pollution means the stars are dazzling, the Milky Way glows, and it's really blissful.

Our local village is unspoilt, friendly and maintains some great traditions such as the festival in August, when the ancient 'four banal' or bread oven, a rare feature, is fired up (it takes four or five days, according to those in the know!) delicious bread is baked, food is prepared, and the whole village, their guests, holidaymakers and friends, celebrate with music, singing and dancing and, of course, plenty of local wine.
We love to share it with others and help them have the time of their lives!
