About this property
Great Old Bastide: A Magical Gathering Getaway in a Perched Hamlet with Views
You are in the South of France and you feel you are on the top of the world, between mountain and sky. Perfect for gentle family living, with friends between mountain and sky. La Bastide d'Esparon is spacious with high ceilings and has an Indoor-Outdoor feeling. You will all have your privacy, even if you are amongst family or friends.
Two great big old houses converted for gentle family living, linked by a terrace outside, doors inside: ideal for a family or a group of up to 16 friends with 8 bedrooms and 11 beds, plus 2 Sofa beds on 380 square meters with 3 outdoor terraces.
La Bastide d'Esparon is a haven full of breathtaking views in a uniquely authentic medieval hamlet perched on an eagle's nest at 650 meters high.
The hamlet has a medieval church, oven and running fountain. It is an authentic Cevenol hamlet with eagle's views onto the Cevennes mountains and Les Causses.
La Bastide is a typical Cevenol stone house. A very well restored and refined atmosphere, with high ceilings, white walls, and a great feeling of luminousness. Some say it was the location of the old Merovingian castle. The house still has old sinks, carved stones, vaulted ceilings, which attest to its past history.
You are in the South of France and you feel you are on the top of the world, between mountain and sky. You are living indoor and outdoor with constant views from the windows and terraces on the untouched and intact sunny countryside of Les Cevennes Meridionales with its rolling mountains, high plateaux and big sky.
A well-restored place, much loved by the creative, colour-conscious family who have owned it for 50 years. Everywhere are lovely Kilim rugs and pieces brought back from the owners' travels – fine old wooden chests, antique wardrobes, contemporary art and books. A most atmospheric, esthetic retreat from the busy world cooled by mountain breezes in the blistering summer, with superb walks, rivers for swimming or canoeing down in the valley, unusual excursions galore - and just 6 kilometers from all shopping.
The hamlet of Esparon is an untouched medieval village dating from the XI th century in a very picturesque ensemble of 25 houses with a chapel and a running fountain, and remains of ramparts and towers. It is located in The Parc National des Cevennes protected by the UNESCO World Heritage for its authentic natural landscapes.
La Bastide d'Esparon is situated in the Languedoc-Roussillon. 40 minutes from Montpellier and Nîmes airports, bus and train stations. From here, you can visit the area of The Languedoc, Les Cevennes, Les Causses and go to all the great summer festivals of theatre in Avignon, photography in Arles and Sete, lyrical opera in Aix or just take great walks and enjoy the fantastic rivers and trails as well as the untouristy quality of the region.
DESCRIPTION OF THE HOUSE
Two great old houses converted for gentle family living, linked by an inside staircase as well as terraces outside: La Bastide has been created to accommodate for friendly and family gatherings.
The Bastide d'Esparon is a special place to stay for up to 16 guests with two independent stone houses which were probably one years back and which I reunited.
I linked the 2 houses by terraces outside and staircases inside with two separate entrances and kitchens allowing for the perfect privacy of one or two families or a group of friends.
The house is on two floors:
Le Haut (the top) and Le Bas (the lower) which are connected by a terrace and an interior staircase with a door. Each floor has a separate entrance for the privacy of each party. There is an additional Guest House which is independant and connected by a terrace to the Le haut and Le Bas.
THE HAMLET OF ESPARON
La Bastide d'Esparon is located in the untouched and intact hamlet of Esparon which is a 'Village Classé'. It is a dead end, you reach it after 3 kilometers uphill and then you are at 700 meters--the eagle’s-eye views are amazing and it is genuine rural France overlooking the National Park of the Cevennes as well as the high plateaux of Les Causses.
The area of the Cevennes is part of the UNESCO World Heritage for its authentic natural landscapes. La Bastide d'Esparon is situated in the Languedoc-Roussillon in the Deaprtement of Le Gard.
40 minutes from Montpellier and Nîmes airports, bus and train stations. About the host
Hosted by Martine Fougeron

I am a fine art photographer. I like spaces and colors. I was born in Paris, France and presently live in New York. I studied at LFNY, l’Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris, Wellesley College and the International Center of Photography.
The house in the South of France is a family house where i have spent my summers since I was 5 years old. I am a photographer working in New York. This has been my country house where I have spent many summers and it is a perfect contrast from the city life. I like the perfect calm and the luminous space I have in this house with the great views on the rolling hills and the light on the mountains of the Cevennes and the high plateaux of the Causses.
This house is my sanctuary. I love the evenings watching the sunset with a glass of rose on the southern terrace, going to the rivers with a picnic, hiking in the mountains or just reading Petrarque.
