About this property
A romantic cottage and artist's retreat looking down over an enchanted lake
The Little House is a 650 square foot cottage ideal for a couple or as a solo artist's/writer's retreat. It is a lovingly decorated country cottage. There is one large bedroom, one bathroom, and a book-lined living room complete with a fold-out futon for an extra guest. The bedroom is shaded by trees and is perfect for cool late-afternoon naps. The room has a vanity table and a large closet. The living room has wicker chairs, a gas fireplace, and a dvd player. The seven-mile lake can be seen from all windows. And the sliding door leads directly from the living room out to a large deck - a true highlight of the little house, as the view is breathtaking in all seasons! The kitchen offers all the basic amenities including a microwave, washing machine, and a separate walk-in pantry complete with storage shelves and a washer and dryer. On the property, there is a garden, a large garden shed, and an outdoor seating area. The entire property is bordered by rocks, trees, and such perennial plants as mint, sage, and tiger-lilies. Parking is available in the front of the house, and there is space for two cars. A small private beach ('B beach'), shared with other residents of our Indian Park neighborhood, is a 10 minute down-hill walk away, or a 2 minute drive in the car. You also have access to the larger public beach in the village (a five minute drive). Bus transportation to and from New York City is at the bottom of our neighborhood -- again, a ten-minute walk down hill. Express and local buses on the New Jersey Transit System. Finally, the Little House backs up against the Appalachian Trail so wonderful hikes abound. You can find a trail head (if courageous) on the upper roads of Indian Park, or enjoy other hiking opportunities in nearby Sterling Forest and Harriman State Park. Along with hiking, wineries, crafts, festivals and fairs can be found in the nearby towns of Warwick, Sugar Loaf, and Monroe, NY. -- The Little House has it all; come for the quiet, the peace, and the beauty of the lake, mountains, and sky.

The home was clean, the area was charming and had plenty of places around for food, supplies etc. One thing I would suggest is to bring a space heater along. The house took a bit to warm up when we arrived.

Sorry about the heating challenge. Perhaps a 'space heater' is something in need to invest in for future renters.
Thank you, thank you for this feedback.

Cute, small and comfortable cabin overlooking Greenwood Lake. Spent a lot of time on the deck overlooking the lake. Even made a Sunday trip driving into NYC, no problem, not much traffic early. Location convenient to small towns, everyone friendly. A great place to stay.
My Host was very friendly and accommodating. The house was clean, inviting and pet friendly. Omg! The views were spectacular & very relaxing.I recommend and plan on going back soon! Ramona
Had a great time at the little house. House was clean and location was beautiful with views of the lake right off the deck. Would definitely recommend if you are looking for a getaway on the lake.
Just the right size. Beautiful view. Bed was comfortable and everything was clean. There is a little ant issue but other than that, everything was perfect. I'll definitely be coming back.
Weather was great, view was spectacular, house had all we needed for a restful getaway. Our host, Julia, was gracious as always. Will certainly be back.
We cannot overstate how perfect this cottage was for us to have a quiet retreat. The place has all you need to unwind and drink in the view. The owners went above and beyond (we stayed 2 full months!). Everything was lovely, thanks Julia :)
My husband and I stayed at The Little House for the weekend to celebrate our anniversary. We really enjoyed our stay. The house is very basic but had everything we needed. We enjoyed sitting out on the deck. Julia was very quick to respond to messages. Overall we had a very nice time!
It was perfect for myself and my 2 dogs. We stayed 2 months. It has an amazing view of the lake. Everything you need was available. I would definitely stay again. You will love the nice quiet area. I was especially fascinated by the 2 guinea hens that roamed the neighborhood. They eat all the insects in the yards.Highly recommend
We were fortunate enough to spend a month at this lovely cottage- and it did not disappoint!
The cottage retreat is even better than the pics- clean, well stocked- gorgeous lake view and super helpful owner (thanks Julia)!
We loved it so much we are booking another month! We give the place a 10/10!
Enjoyable stay in the cottage with nice lake view and friendly neighbours. Julia was always easy to reach and communicate with. Everything we needed was either available upon arrival or provided in timely manner upon request. We would love to return to the little house in the future.
Cottage is in a nice place, but there was not one comfortable place to sit ! Furniture, falling apart wicker, cushions torn, filling falling out. We fixed the WIFI ( were told to call the tech guy ourselves)broken TV. Broken patio umbrella.Filthy, sticky bathroom floor. Mat in tub full of fungus.Rickety ,dirty night stands. Metal sitting set in front, rusty, falling apart. Total trash. Too bad the owner didn't care . Could have been great. Save your money, don't wish this experience on anyone. UGH!!
This is a magical place. The Little House is comfortable and well-appointed, and the view of Greenwood Lake and the Sterling Forest just take your breath away.
Our heartfelt thanks to the owners for sharing it with us!

About the host

My name is Julia, and I live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn with my husband, Fred. We love the Little House so much. And ever since I bought it in 2008, it has been a wonderful retreat for us away from the craziness of the city. I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and have always lived in old houses. But this cottage -- my first of my own--was built on its footprint in 2008 and all its fixtures are new! I so love the bamboo floors and the sliding glass doors that lead out to the view from the deck. I wrote my dissertation for my doctorate in this special retreat; it has always been a house made for reading, painting, and writing. And as a St. Louisan, I love to see the cardinals fly by!
Why they chose this property
I was driving a friend around to look at possible houses she might purchase. We got connected with an amazing real estate broker and, at the end of the day, she showed us the house I now own! It was just being re-built on its footprint; there was not even a roof yet. But I knew...I just knew! I am going to live here! My friend never ended up buying anything but I did! And have never regretted it for a second. It has always been called 'The Little House' and it is a true cottage all my own. Can't wait to share it with you!!
What makes this property unique
The view from the deck was what initially drew me. But then, once the bedroom was built and came to life, I've loved the shady sanctuary of being surrounded by rocks and trees that this room provides. Great for afternoon summer naps with the ceiling fans gently bringing more coolness. The owners built the Little House with a true artist's touch and included tiles and other creative fixtures. The bamboo floors and the gas fireplace are unique aspects which I so also love.
