About this property

Xmas offer, 5* review & views, nr Ullswater

When you stay with us we take extra care for you to relax and enjoy your break away from home, so we completely clean the barn ourselves between bookings. Living next door we’re also on hand with local knowledge about the area and to answer any questions. Lowside barn sleeps a maximum of 5 adults plus 1 child.
We’re in an idyllic quiet conservation area with a lawned garden and many scenic walks from the house. A mile away in Askham there’s a well stocked village shop and great cosy pub.

We offer a warm welcome to our well equipped barn conversion next to our home, a former farmhouse built in 1687 in the picturesque conservation village of Helton. Helton is situated in the quiet NE corner of the Lake District National Park, half way between Ullswater (5miles) and Haweswater (6miles), within easy access of all the Park's mountains, lakes and fells, with a wide variety of walks and outdoor activities, some great village pubs, cafes and restaurants close by. It really is a home away from home at affordable prices for couples, families or groups of friends, with all you need to create a really memorable Lakeland holiday!

We pride ourselves in our attention to every detail to make your stay as comfortable and relaxed as possible. Not only do we clean the property ourselves to maintain a consistently high standard of presentation, we also re-wash all the cutlery, glassware and cups through the dishwasher between bookings.

We have equipped and decorated the barn for you to relax in an atmosphere of calm tranquility, in light airy rooms. We have combined antique and contemporary furniture and paintings in a traditional Lakeland country style. Upstairs, you'll love the stylish and comfortable bedrooms: the master bedroom has a king-size bed and en-suite bathroom; the pretty double room has its own basin and wonderful views across the garden and valley beyond; and the small third bedroom with bunk beds and skylight, best suited for children and teenagers, or one adult. After a day out amongst the fells, you'll look forward to a wonderful night's sleep on high quality mattresses, with soft goose down duvets and pillows, Egyptian cotton bedding and towels. Downstairs is the second bathroom with walk-in shower, toilet and basin.

The cosy beamed living room has views over the garden, fields beyond and across the Lowther valley. It has a log burner, comfy sofas and dining area, with flat screen TV, DVD, CD player, wi-fi, well stocked bookcase and games. The well-equipped kitchen has a dishwasher, washer dryer, fridge freezer, electric cooker and microwave, and a range of cooking/roasting/baking equipment.

In summer you'll love relaxing with a barbecue and glass of wine in our garden, enjoying the expansive view across the valley towards Knipe Scar. In winter, what better way to end your day than to snuggle up in front of the glowing log burner for a cosy candlelit night in, after a day out exploring all that the Lake District has to offer? Or treat yourselves to dining out in one of our local award-winning pubs or restaurants. The cosy Punchbowl Inn, The Queen's Head and The Michelin-starred Allium restaurant at Askham Hall are only a mile away in the next village! An excellent alternative is the George & Dragon gastro-pub in Clifton, less than 10mins drive.

After visiting the Lake District all our lives, for family outdoor adventures and special celebrations, we finally realised our dream of being able to live here in 2015. We have worked hard on Lowside Barn to enhance its original character to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, next to our house in an idyllic setting, surrounded by beautiful scenery......just what we have always looked for in a holiday cottage! We pride ourselves in our attention to detail and have equipped it to a high standard with every home comfort to make it feel like home from home for you.

We have a passion for the outdoors and between us have walked, kayaked and rock-climbed most of what is on our doorstep. Chris also has a special interest in geology and the landscape, he loves to share his local knowledge and experience with our visitors. We have maps and guide books for almost everything....you'll find us knowledgeable and helpful if you need advice in selecting your walks or activities.

We absolutely love this quiet unspoiled corner of the Lakes and our aim is to do all we can to enable you to have a really memorable experience of Lakeland and for this to become a special place for you, your family and friends too!

Why they chose this property

Our 5* reviews can speak for themselves:
“Thank you for providing such a well equipped and well cared-for place to stay. We were impressed by your care and attention to Covid safety.”
“This is a comfortable and well equipped cottage in a quiet and picturesque location. The owners are very helpful and welcoming.”
Though whilst we're on hand next door if needed to help with any questions you may have, we also absolutely respect your privacy to enjoy your holiday uninterrupted!

What makes this property unique

A particular feature of Lowside Barn is its elevated position facing towards the sunrise, giving us panoramic views across the beautiful and unspoiled Lowther Valley. The distinctive limestone scenery ranges from pastoral farmland dotted with pretty villages like ours, to further up the valley, the rugged fells around Haweswater that give access to the bigger High Street range of mountains. We're very near to the lakes and mountains but just far enough away from the busy spots to enjoy peace and quiet, with great walking and mountain biking trails on the doorstep.

Our limestone scenery is crisscrossed with ancient drystone walls, bridleways and paths or 'lonnings', leading either down to the River Lowther, or up onto Askham Fell above the village. In 45 mins walk from the house up onto the fell, you can overlook spectacular views of Ullswater (only 3miles over the fell) and it's backdrop of mountains, looking towards Blencathra in the north and Helvellyn to the south. Up on our fell it's also fun to explore the many groups of prehistoric cairns, standing stones and the Cockpit stone circle left by Helton's stone age settlers.

If you have children to entertain, it's about an hour's walk from the cottage across the river and along the valley to Lowther Castle and the amazing Lost Castle adventure playground, cafe and Dan Pearson garden. From the end of May to September, there's a well kept heated outdoor swimming pool in Askham, open afternoons at weekends and school holidays.
