About this property

Stunning hilltop villa with amazing views, pool, olive grove, vines and woods.

This sympathetically restored hilltop farmhouse has sweeping views of the valley below. Torricella offers the perfect Italian villa experience, with its beautiful farmhouse kitchen, adjoining loggia for eating al fresco, a wonderful drawing room with enormous fireplace, and a stunning pool.
The grounds surrounding the house offer wonderful walks. The pool area overlooking the olive grove and vines is a panacea for the senses. The house has been restored using traditional regional materials and has excellent green credentials with a low carbon footprint. The tasteful furniture and sense of style are apparent everywhere. Restored by a local builder and craftsmen, using reclaimed materials where possible, the house incorporates energy saving systems to minimize the impact on the environment. While remaining true to its Umbrian farmhouse roots, Torricella provides luxurious holiday living, and is equipped with all the modern amenities. Very spacious, with plenty of communal areas, it has four main bedrooms, and two additional rooms with sofa beds. For children there are cots, high chairs and a buggy, as well as an abundance of games for all ages. All four bedrooms have overhead ceiling fans and all windows have insect screens. For children there are indoor and outdoor games. For the adults, think of wine tastings, cooking courses and so much more. For those who like to combine relaxation with sightseeing, there are many picturesque towns within easy driving distance. Torricella is situated in the middle of Italy. The major cultural centres of Rome, Florence, Sienna and Pisa are a day-trip away, with beautiful towns such as Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio and Cortona (to name but a few) being an easy half-day visit. We can offer Italian immersion courses at the Villa so that, when one does venture forth, one is confident to mix in with the local people.
The house also has an abundance of books and plenty of secluded areas to sit and read.
There are four main bedrooms (3 doubles and 1 twin/double), a bedroom/study which has a convertible sofa bed and the Hayloft also has three futons which are perfect for young people. There are three bathrooms and a downstairs loo in the boiler room.
As a personal touch for our guests we offer toiletries and a welcome pack.

Perfect for families vacationing together
This property is clearly a home the owners love that they have opened up for others to appreciate - versus the purpose-outfitted rentals that have become too common. Everything is as you would want in your own place, the furniture, the bedding, the outfitting of the kitchen, etc. It is beautifully decorated and landscaped and impeccably maintained. The pictures cannot do it justice - as it is a breathtaking location that you can only really appreciate from the pool or many terraces. You need to have a car with high ground clearance, ideally AWD, to make the 3 kilometers of dirt road off the highway, but it's well worth the trip. There was an error in the listing that indicated the house had air conditioning, but it does not. As a person who's always had CAC, I can attest that - absent a medical condition requiring it - AC is unnecessary as long as you manage the shades and windows. We were there during an unusual heatwave and were comfortable at all times. The location is in a region not visited by crowds - but that's a big part of its charm. Umbria is full of small, charming, market villages, beautiful landscapes, pre-Roman history and fantastic food and wine - it just takes a little bit of research - and the rewards for doing so are many.

About the host

Torricella is owned by Iain and Sophie and their three children. We were lucky enough to be posted to Naples for three years and immediately fell in love with Italy. It was towards the end of our stay there, after having travelled all over Italy, that we decided Umbria was where we wanted to put down roots. Torricella, even in its dilapidated state, was all that we were looking for in an Italian house. A four year restoration project brought it back to life and has given us a family home in the most wonderful setting. Although we currently live in Brussels, we intend to live permanently in Torricella one day, sharing this special place with family and friends. Torricella provides the perfect holiday location for families with young children or teenagers, and for groups of friends.

Why they chose this property

You will know as soon as you arrive at Torricella – the view simply takes your breath away! The house sits on the saddle of a hill at the angle of two valleys above an olive grove, affording magnificent views to both the south and the west. We have sited both the pool and the terrace to take best advantage of this panorama. Umbria remains so unspoilt and relatively undiscovered; it has a wealth of culture, tradition and cuisine that is unique to it and yet the great art cities of Italy are within easy reach. We have found the local people to be extremely open and welcoming, and we have enjoyed making new friendships every time we visit.

What makes this property unique

The setting. The early morning mist in the valley sits below the house, and the hills opposite resemble floating islands. In the evening, the bells of the churches ring out as the sun sets on the terrace. We have five acres of grounds so children are free to explore and make plenty of noise. Renovation. Our builder is a craftsman who has restored Torricella beautifully using traditional materials and techniques. The floors have hand laid terracotta and the beams are chestnut supporting traditional tiled ceilings. Green credentials. An important aspect of the renovation was low carbon footprint but without compromising on aesthetics. Most of our hot water comes from solar panels hidden on the roof, as does a significant proportion of the electricity. We also have a heat pump.
