Why they chose this property
Rough Park was built sometime in the 18th century probably because it has access to good quality well water. The well and the proximity to the road meant Rough Park was a well known stopping point for travellers and in particular gypsy families. The road opposite the farm is known as Gypsy Lane and as late as the 1970’s gypsies would regularly stop to request a “kettle of sweet water.”
The farm was originally part of the Boconnock Estate but along with many other farms in the area was sold off after WW1 to pay death duties.
My great-grandfatherbought the farm in 1919 and it has been in the family ever since. My sister and I were born here.
