Whetstone Pond Cottage on the Lake is a two story, two bedroom lakeside retreat with a 3rd bonus bedroom on the large screened in porch. It is located on picturesque Whetstone Pond, twenty minutes south of Moosehead Lake. The area abounds with the natural beauty of mountains, woods, lakes, and streams. Whetstone Pond lies adjacent to the Appalachian Trail, so hiking in the area is legendary, while walking and biking are very good as well. The cottage is directly on the water and has a large private dock for sunning, swimming, boating, bird watching, or simply gazing at the views of Russell mountain across the lake . The swimming temperature is ideal and the water is clean and fresh. Stargazing is awesome! The cottage is charmingly furnished with Maine country antiques and the kitchen is fully equipped. There is one canoe and there are two kayaks for your boating expeditions. Look for loons, beaver, and moose! Bring your fishing rod or favorite book and find out what real relaxation is all about! Or: for a change of pace, take a leisurely drive to Moosehead Lake, the largest lake in Maine. You will find the restaurants, the shops, and the museums you may also wish to experience! Something to know about GPS directions for the cottage is that they are not correct, not quite. We are #26 Alder Lane, Blanchard Maine 04406, the middle home on Alder Lane, lake side. I find that putting in #25 Alder Lane works at the moment.

We enjoyed our stay at whetstone pond for a week in august. Enoyed the lake in kayaks, sitting on the dock and on the sceened in porch. The AT is nearby and also moosehead lake. A cozy and scenic home base to explore from or just sit back and relax!

Thank you for your lovely description of our lakeside cottage. We are glad you enjoyed yourselves and hope you come again.
We thoroughly enjoyed this sweet pond-side retreat with all of its classic Maine Charm. We may have missed the message, but did not have specific driving directions - it is a very long rural road from Monson (yet only 15 mins from downtown) so we were anxious at first that we wouldn't find it. Once we did though, we were very happy -loons and all!
We have stayed here many times. My wife came to Whetstone "camp" her entire life and also brought her 2 children until they were out of College. This cottage is reminiscent of that special place and from my point of view even nicer. I love the books and this time read Thoreau's The main woods and it was really nice to hear of the travel in the old days of the places that are right here before our eyes. Our bed was comfortable and we very much like how the upstairs was opened up some. We are grateful for the correspondence's with the owners.
Great setting on lake. Fine stock of kitchen needs. Could not get TV/VCR to work and only heat is wood burni g stove downstairs. Our last few nights were cold (mid October)! Upstairs "rooms" are basically open to each other (fine for just 2 of us but might not have been great with other non-family couples). We spent most of our time at Turning Page Farm and Brewery which was about 20 minutes away, so location and price was good for us. The host(s) were very nice and communication was easy.
The cottage was cute and filled with interesting decorations, including art and older photographs from surrounding areas. The use of the kayaks and canoe kept us paddling around the lake. We spent evenings playing board games on the wraparound screened-in porch. Reading with a cup of coffee on the dock was relaxing in the mornings. The sunsets over the mountains were gorgeous from the private dock.
The owners were extremely responsive and helpful. We appreciated the choice of cleaning after ourselves at the end of our stay or contacting their cleaning service at inexpensive rate.
We highly recommend this Cottage at Whetstone Lake for those who enjoy exploring the lake and surrounding area and for those who want some rest and relaxation.

Enjoyed our Stay
While everything was not a '10', we enjoyed our stay. Biggest problem was WIFI and phone reception. I spoke with the owner 2 days before arriving and was assured we would have WIFI (100% necessary for my job). That was not the case. We called her twice and phone calls were not returned. Had to make trips to nearest town to library to do my job. Had no cell phone coverage. There were many pet ants in the kitchen and bath. We found some ant traps, which we set out and that helped. The GFI in the kitchen kept tripping. The inside of camp was clean enough but the outside screened porch was not. Tree pollen and dirt covered most everything. Washing the table top produced a black rag. The grill grates on the barbeque was rusty and wouldn't clean up. Bought a new grate so we could use it. Regardless of all that, we had a great time and enjoyed the area.

Hello, Pat,
We are glad that you enjoyed the area, but sorry that our charming lakeside cottage did not meet your expectations. We could not know that the internet service was being switched to a cable all around the area. The connection did get sorted within a couple of days of the beginning of your stay.We are sorry that you were inconvenienced. I am not aware of the additional phone calls you made to us or I certainly would have answered you. I'm afraid there still would have been no way for me to hasten the process. I was doing all I could from home. The porch is screened in, so I guess pollen can enter at certain times of year, but it is still a delightful place to have a meal, while enjoying the mountain and lake views. As for the occasional ant, we do try and will try harder. Enjoy the rest of your summer. Karen and Tom
Excellent stay! Easy dock and water access, stable kayaks, amazing views, and we loved the big screen porch!

Quaint and rustic property
First time expected to bring your own linens and towels to a rental...read the fine print! The 5 bedrooms included a loft area with 3 comfortable Queen beds separated by partial room dividers and a covered porch with two twin beds. After our initial surprise in discovering these accommodations, my friends and I embraced the experience and enjoyed discovering a wide variety of antiques, interesting old books and other curiosities. Evenings around the fire and a paddle around the peaceful pond were a plus. IF your group is looking for a quaint and rustic Maine camp experience and privacy is not an issue, this might be the place for you!
We had another great stay at the cottage on the pond, and we are looking forward to visiting again for a week in August. It really checks all the boxes for us: great swimming, excellent hiking nearby, fantastic sunsets, to name a few. We loved it. Thank you, Karen!
My time at the Whetstone Pond cottage was fantastic! The property sits close to the water, so entry and exit of the pond was super convenient. Water is above-quality, the view of the western mountains amazing. The camp itself is charming, clean, very cozy and rustic. Exactly as a Maine camp should be! The hostess was extremely responsive extremely easy to work with. A must if you are looking for a true camp experience!
Second year here. We like the place and so do my fiancee's grown children. Been making this. They have been making this pilgrimage their entire life and their mom for over 50 years. Glad to have found this nice place to continue the tradition.
We loved everything about our stay
The host was very responsive and polite. The house is beautiful and big. The kitchen is very well equipted. You can see the love and effort the owner had put here.
We loved having breakfast watching the water and dinners on the deck watching the sunset.
Karen even lend us their kayaks and we had a wonderful time exploring around the pond
My dog loved the house, the backyard and the water!
We honestly hope we can come back soon!

Thank you Sol for your wonderful review of our place on Whetstone Pond! We are very glad that you had a great time and enjoyed the house and the water. Hope you come again.
Like the family camp on a lake that I never had - comfortable, filled with antiques, fully usable mid-20th century kitchen utensils, coffee cans and such. The lake is beautiful, and sitting on the Adirondack chairs on the dock with coffee or a drink is sublime.

The place is well kept and clean. The lake is beautiful.
They do allow motorized boats on the lake so there are speed boats and occasionally jetskis. We really enjoyed kayaking down to the marsh at the end of the lake but we weren't lucky enough to see moose.

Perfect Family Get Away!
I loved this vacation. We made full use of the kitchen everyday with homemade fresh meals, we love canoeing and kayaking. It was amazing to be so away from it all. It was the perfect get away for my family.

Delighful Cottage
This review is long overdue. We had the pleasure of spending 2 weeks at Whetstone Pond in August 2009. This cottage was comfortable and quite peaceful, everything you would need for an amazing vacation.
Setting on the pier with a glass of wine, listing to the loons, it doesn't get any better. We enjoyed busy day's of exploring the Greenville area, hiking on Borestone Mtn. and all the other neat little towns near by. But at the end of the day you will be happy to return to the peace and quite of the lakeside cabin. The pond is beautiful, it was great having Kayaks and a Canoe on site. Karen Stevens was wonderful to work with, provided information on the area, places to go and things to see. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to be away from the crowds, and enjoys the woods and water. We will visit again.

About the host
Hosted by Karen Stevens
Owners Karen and Tom have taken the same 3 weeks in July in their cottage for over 30 years and have given their own 2 sons wonderful Maine summers. While there, they make improvements and work on gardens and maintenance. Tom reads a lot and Karen paints and writes songs. There is much socializing with family and neighbors, and it is always a wonderful, old fashioned time!
