As they say in real estate ... Location, location, Location. Beautiful view of Newport River especially from the bench on the dock. Very quiet and peaceful. Very close to Beaufort and convenient to go almost anywhere. Only complaint is the water, as well as any ice made from it, tastes bad as it is from a well.
From start to finish we loved our stay at The Tilghman House! Quaint, cozy, mid-century flare, topped with an amazing view of the Newport River and a fantastic pier. We fished, paddled, swam, sunset gazed, bird watched, and followed the hermit crabs on the sandy bottom of the river shoreline. The amenities were perfect for our family and the beds were so comfy for a good nights rest! Perfect amount of privacy to wind down from the hustle and bustle, but close enough to Beaufort waterfront and beaches to do all the things. Recs: Eat lunch in the shade at Dock House on the gorgeous waterfront and take a trip on Island Express Ferry to enjoy the beaches and wild ponies at Shackleford Banks. Great getaway!
A really great place. Large property in a peaceful area so it's quiet and private. Large floor plan and plenty of space. Reminded me a bit of my grandparents house.Yes there are quirks, so don't expect a full modern design - it's vintage. We visited for 4 nights and everything worked great. Kids loved it with plenty of room to run and explore the water, finding oysters, hermit crab, whelk, and stuff. Watching the rabbits was a fun treat. We'd definitely stay again!
We had a great time. We went to shackelford banks and caught fish of the dock at the rental property. To small to keep. But the kids had fun

Musty
The 50's decor is fine. The house was clean and we had what we needed. The property and dock were excellent. Beautiful view. But the smell was horrible. Musty. Mold growing on outside of house. Yes it is coastal and the house is on the ground. Not on stilts. But needs seriously airing out. We booked for 3 nights and only stayed 2.The water smelled really bad too.The host were great. Nice polite. I am glad they want to share this house. Maybe put gutters on the house so the water is channeled away would help. Also, clean the return air vents. We couldnt decide if they were dirty with just lint or lint with mold. We did not contact owners to voice our concerns. We figured it would be ok for a few days. But ended up leaving.
1950's Time Capsule... Great place & location, some quirks
This place was in a great location, we loved it, and will likely be back next year. Had my GF and 2 of our adult children with us. The rabbits and squirrels (one crazy squirrel did dances and hops.... I mean like olypmic quality) were great. The dock was great.
Some quirks... The back door, which is the only door we used, is badly warped and a real PITA to get to close and open. The bathrooms are NOT friendly to tall people (my son and I are both 6'6")...One shower had a entrance we couldn't use, the other had a shower head that was perfect for keeping belly buttons clean The king size bed was a bit short, normally only my toes hang off the end, on this one, my ankles and more were dangling, even with my head at the top. BUT... These were minor annoyances, the property was great.
We enjoyed our stay at this house. It's a large house with a big kitchen (with all the right pots and pans). The view of the river is pleasant, and you can kayak right from the back yard. Because the river is pretty shallow, there isn't much boat traffic and that is very peaceful! We enjoyed having a cocktail hour out on the dock every evening, watching the ospreys and pelicans fly by. We didn't try to fish but there were lots of fish jumping. The water near the dock is shallow and you can wade out a ways before it gets deep.
The location is nice if you want some peace and quiet but want to be able to get into Beaufort easily; it's a short drive. Radio Island (surf-free swimming area) is a quick drive too. We hope to come back next year!
One caveat: This house really is a fifties house--the appliances and furniture are mostly old (the fridge and washer/dryer are new). Everything works and things are in good shape; I got a nice feeling of nostalgia from it. But this might not be everyone's cup of tea.

Excellent Home base
This home is an excellent home base in a quiet neighborhood and a great place to relax after a day of exploring the area! We couldn't ask for nicer weather to enjoy the town of Beaufort, Fort Macon State Park, the aquarium, and Cape Lookout National seashore. We were fortunate to see the wild horses on Rachel Carson Reserve. Easy check in and check out and the Manager was great and is local.

This property is a wonderful peace of heaven. Quiet and peaceful
Beautiful home with a wonderful view of the water. We absolutely enjoyed our stay & we hope to be able to stay there again.
The only negative comment that we can give is the sulphur smell of the water. For bathing & dishes it presented no problems. Since, however, we had read about the water's sulphur smell in a previous renter's comments, we took bottled drinking water with us.
Again, it is a beautiful, clean, well-maintained care of home with a gorgeous view.
We loved it here! The house is adorable, comfortable and has an awesome yard and view. The home owners have taken such great care to keep the home in its 50’s vibe while also providing modern conveniences.
Lovely vintage property. The owners are even lovelier. We loved having a quiet getaway to swim and enjoy our family time. Exploring Beautiful Beaufort each morning and lazy afternoons swimming off the dock. It was perfect!
This property is in a fantastic location just five minutes to restaurants and the grocery store in Beaufort. The yard is a private park-like setting with a dock on the water. My children loved going out to the dock and wading in the water. The house is about a 15 minute drive to Atlantic Beach. The house is well kept and had everything we needed. The hosts were nice and helpful.
We absolutely loved this home and vacation spot. The fishing was perfect even on the day's it light rained. Everyone in our family had lots of room for sleep, resting in the living room and fun time in the kitchen. The owners of the home made us feel so welcome and answered all our questions and showed us the property. They even helped us find great places to try locally. We can't wait to go back one day to this property.
View was breathtaking upon arrival and keeps your interest. The managers/owners are close by but they are not intrusive. The house was quite comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked for cooking there. It was very quiet there. The wildlife was great. We saw dolphins 5’ from dock and skates or stingrays as my grandson called them. It’s so convenient to everything, store’s, restaurants, beach’s. We absolutely loved our time there and hope to come back soon.
Pleasant comfortable home in quiet convenient location
Located in spacious grounds far from neighbors, with a big lawn area that would be nice for a family in summer. Easy to get to many places of interest. Pleasant view over the water. Comfortable home with plenty of space. But you do have to get used to the strong sulphur smell of the tap water; bring fresh water from elsewhere to drink.
Lovely 50s ranch with a dock and wonderful great room. Kids loved catching crabs of the dock and I loved the convenience to beaufort waterfront. Awesome property
We'll be back! The location was perfect - right on the bay/river, with a dock for relaxing and fishing. The house was beautiful and comfortable. We never even went to the beach or to town - just stayed at the house and property and relaxed. My tween and teen boys loved it, too.
The kitchen has all the pots and pans we needed, and it also has a Keurig for coffee. Linens are provided, games are in the closet.
There were some mosquitoes on the dock at night, but that's what you expect on the water in the summer at night.
