About this property
Superb 19C stone house with yard, 3 mins walk - no steps - to Hydra port
Blissful relaxation in the residential heart of Hydra town. Enjoy casual, minimal architecture, and ecological design that reflects the pride and tradition of generations of islanders: everyday heroes, artists and celebrities alike. Lounge, dine, socialize with special friends and family or just gaze at the stars from your yard. Follow the island's natural rhythms with a healthy, social and outdoor lifestyle. Easy no stairs three minutes’ walk on cobbled paths to all Hydra port has to offer.
The 200 years-old house was passed from generation to generation of working sponge divers and fishermen. The pride of its owners is reflected in the austere architectural volumes and their sculptural beauty - typical of Hydra island – both humbly preserved in the renovation.
You will enjoy casual, all-natural materials, and minimalist décor that brings out the beautifully raw qualities of the stone structure. All furniture, sinks and even wall lights are hand-made by Greek craftsmen, and original art by Greek artists adorns the walls.
Note your booking is inclusive of all taxes, including 15 EUR/night tourist sustainability tax.
The villa consists of two buildings - the old 2-floor stone house, and the (more recent) guest house, around a beautiful 65m2 outside private yard/patio on three levels, all enclosed within the private villa area complex.
Access to the villa from Hydra port does not require climbing stairs. The ground floor areas of the villa including the guest house (with double bed and en-suite), main bathroom and main yard are easily accessible to people with reduced mobility.
There are stairs within the the villa connecting the basement and the first floor with the ground floor.
Note there are no cars, motorcycles or bicycles anywhere on Hydra Island. Primary transport is by walking, assisted by donkeys and water taxis.
The indoor layout is open plan with no internal doors, walls or partitions allowing abundant natural light and ventilation, even at the expense of some privacy. Full-length white curtains substitute for internal doors, providing a delicate balance between spaciousness and privacy.
The kitchen is well equipped, particularly for healthy cooking and eating – you choose whether to cook indoor or outdoor or a bit of both.
The yard is perfect for warm gatherings of friends, families and special guests, under the stars or under the morning shade. Please respect quiet hours.
It is an easy two minutes’ walk along charming cobbled paths to all amenities, shops, eating, arts and entertainment options available around Hydra port. There are no steps to climb to or from the villa.
The nearest supermarket is within a minute walk, as is the main town square with eating and cafe options.
Beach boats and water taxis can be found straight ahead when you reach the quay. The nearest swimming point, Spilia, is a further five minutes’ walk along the sea-side path.
Continue on the paths either side of the picture-perfect port for stunning sea-side walks and jogs, longer for scenic and rewarding hikes to untouched parts of the island.
The villa incorporates a number of ecological features. Traditional wooden windows are fitted with double glazing and retractable screens for worry-free use. Energy-efficient air-conditioning/heating and appliances, low wattage LED dimmable lights are fitted throughout the villa.
A restored, fully-functioning cistern provides an authentic rainwater outdoor shower experience after a hot morning at the beach, a jogging session or your hiking adventure. (It also provides an alternative water supply when needed).
Expect to live like a local in this quiet, charming residential neighborhood in Hydra town, in touch with the daily natural rhythms of this very special island and its people.

About the host
Hosted by Harinos

Hi, my name is Harinos. I am a strategy consultant and entrepreneur. In previous incarnations I have been a classical pianist, a town planner and a banker. I have traveled the world looking for the perfect sea ... and have found it back in Greece. Of course I am a bit biased but hope not too much... Greece is a beautiful country and Hydra is a gem. Hope my house and my staff will showcase the best of our country's and our island's beauty and hospitality.
Why they chose this property
Hydra is the perfect island. Largely untouched by time, and likely to remain so. I have been inspired by many Greek islands, but Hydra has the advantage of accessibility and island life all-year round and, of course... ah what peace!! When you first set foot on Hydra you will realize how it has been a favorite of world-famous artists and jet-setters.
I dare say there are three sides to Hydra: There is a wild side that reflects its largely untouched nature, heroic past and the difficulties of everyday island life. There is a cosmopolitan side that has built up from its naval past, celebrity visitors, artists, yachters, cruise ships and tourists from all over the world. And there is a poetic side that is harder to describe, probably has to do with the combination of all, the austere architecture, the blue of the surrounding sea and the harshness of the terrain, all under the raw, unrelenting Greek light.

What makes this property unique
The stone house spoke proudly to me from the first moment. "Lost" in the cobbled paths of Hydra it stood dignified with calm authority, not pretending to be anything else than what it was and still is. Walking inside, the different levels and rooms provoke an architectural experience similar to that of walking the cobbled paths of Hydra. For me, entering the port of Hydra feels like entering my own home. Hope you feel the same joy when you do the same.
The architectural volumes and all stone wall features have been faithfully preserved. Indeed I would not have done anything different even if strict local planning laws allowed it. I love how there are still no straight lines around!
The restoration was painstaking, involving all work done by hand by local craftsmen. The custom-made timber doors and windows are replicas of the (unfortunately heavily decayed) originals. Top quality, energy efficient equipment was imported from as far as Silicon Valley. Original art by Greek artists adorn the walls.
