ABOUT AUBAIS AND NEARBY
Aubais a medieval town was established by the year 1095. It’s property walls are marked by the traditional ‘empegues’. It is situated near the river Vedourle, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. It has a weekly market where local cheeses, fruits vegetables and meat can be purchased.
In the middle of the historic Aubais you can find an excellent restaurant ‘la Tabliere’ which is specialise in cooking the local speciality, restaurant ‘La Villa Vicha’ with its park and a Spa, well known ‘La Squadra’ for their hamburgers and pizzas, Bar and Cafeterias and more. All of these are within 15 minutes walking from Vichelda.
On one side of the causeway of the river Vedourle is the Moulin de la Carriere and on the other side is the river beach, safe for children to swim and play. The Moulin de Carrier was built in the 13th century as well as Gallo-Roman oppidum Ambrussum, with a single arch of a Roman bridge (painted by French painter Gustave Courbet) and the Chapel St. Nazaire.
The bank of the Vidourle river goes up the hil to enjoy the panoramic views over the Pic St. Loup and the Vidourle river which carved a long canyon at the Roque d’Aubais. On top the hill of the old town is an imposing Chateau. There are many footpaths and bridleways with cycle paths and interesting and unusual flora. The Voie Verte is nearby and is a cycle path that joins nearby Roman town of Sommieres with Nimes. Aubais is surrounded with Roman ruins and bridges path so old that the chariot wheels marks are still visible on the stone. Aubais tranquil ambiance attracts the art lovers (you are welcome to join art courses to learn the visual art )and also the wine connoisseurs, Domaine Aubai-Mema serves and sells its bio wine. Languedoc-Roussillon is the largest wine producing region of France. There are many excellent local wines.
The a proximity (25min) to the beaches of the Mediterranean Sea, cycle paths, the colourful markets which can be attended at the near places every day of the week, the classy cities of Nimes and Montpellier as the Cevennes mountain region, Pont-du-Garde, Aigues-Mortes, Grau-du-Roi Port-Camargue and many other very interesting places makes it a very popular destination all year round.
Within a few kilometres is the possibility of Aubais - Camarque white horses and black Bulls Games, Wine tasting and touring, Golf, Horse riding, Canoeing, Fishing, Boules, Cycling, Rambling, Hot air ballooning, Roc De Massereau Adventure Park, Aubais Club de Canoe-Kayak, Vidourle Sport Nature and more.
Foodies will also be delighted by the specialities (and bio food) to be found at the many markets and farm shops.
It is also a great region for culture with music festivals, dance and art in many local villages as well as large events, for example, in Nimes and Montpellier. Crafts, local ceramics, browsing the boutiques, antiques and workshops, even have a short course to try your hand.
The Roman heritage of the region is to be found all around. The Arenas and amphiteatres of Nimes and Arles (also famous for the paintings by Van Gogh) are the best preserved in the world. The most amazing sight of the Pont du Gard, an aqueduct built 2000 years ago to carry water from Uzes to Nimes. It is the second most photographed sight in France, exceeded only by the Eiffel tower. The light, firework and music spectacles set in the river valley, beneath the aqueduct are quite an experiences.

About the host
Your host
My wife and I would like to welcome you, the guests, to our lovely cottage and enjoy your stay in South of France.
We (Helena and Victor) come to Languedoc-Roussillon 3 years ago, after we have lived in Australia for 27 years. Before that, we have lived in UK.
When we came for first time to Aubais, we fell in love with the place and the whole area. We love the outdoor so we wanted a place where we could cycle, walk, swim and admire the clean sandy beaches, explore the rich architectural heritage ranges from Roman to Romanesque, which is all around this part of France. And as we liked especially not being
too far from visiting large centres of commerce and culture, this place was ideal. We love it because there is everything for everyone.
