We just absolutely love this home and property. The home is comfortable, clean, and has everything you need for the perfect stay. The outdoor seating areas and views are just amazing. It is a peaceful spot in the country but stil close to wineries, downtown slo, and the beaches. Our favorite place by far!
Wonderful property tucked away in the hills behind SLO; peaceful, scenic and nicely appointed. The host is kind and generous. And the place has all the amenities of home. We had a terrific stay.
Had a lovely, relaxing weekend on the ranch. Everything was truly perfect, and the host, Gary, was friendly and helpful. We have jobs that can be stressful, and a quiet weekend in a beautiful setting was the ideal remedy. Thank you!
As Cal Poly alumni we visit the area frequently. This visit my girls and I traveled with friends and the house met all our needs. The rolling green hills in the spring are gorgeous and we loved watching the animals range from the property. We only wish it hadn't been so rainy over our visit as we would have loved to walk the long driveway and explore a bit more. The house met all of our needs, offering comfort and some supplies that many rentals don't which we appreciated. The quiet serenity of the property was the perfect place for us to retreat and relax after our days of shopping downtown. Gary made sure that we had his contact even when the VRBO site was down.
This is a beautiful property and very comfortable home! We did not want to leave as the weather was perfection and the views to die for. Would love to stay here again when we return to SLO.
The house and location exceeded all expectations! Loved the cleanliness, the water pressure and the size and comfort of the beds. Really was perfect and only wish we could have stayed longer to enjoy. Thank you!
I stayed with my husband and 20 something kids. We were blown away by the beauty of the property. We woke to hear cows lowing and birds singing. In the evening it's a chorus of frogs. It's quiet and peaceful yet close to SLO and beaches at Pismo and Morro Bay. There are easily 10 wineries within a 3 mile radius. Our host Gary went above and beyond to make us comfortable. We can't wait to visit again.
Beautiful property, quiet and serene, yet close to towns, wineries and beaches. Home was very clean and offered great amenities - teas, coffee, toiletries. Wine, cheese and breakfast foods upon arrival was a special bonus. Host was responsive and easy to reach. We look forward to returning!
My husband and I spent 3 nights at The Casita and had a wonderful experience. The house was too large for just the two of us, but the property was chosen for the magnificent view, which did not disappoint. We enjoyed morning coffee and afternoon wine on one of the two patios and just enjoyed the surrounding beauty and solitude. It wasn't far to drive to SLO and everything the town has to offer. Gary was a welcoming host and very responsive if we had questions. We loved the area and our stay. We will be back!
We spent a few nights here during Cal Poly’s family weekend. This could not have been a better location- away from the chaos of crowds here for family weekend, but only 15 minutes from campus. I will seek out this place on every trip up here!
Excellent. As advertised and complete with all amenities. Excellent reception wine bottle and cheese and crackers. Gary is a super host and very accommodating. The mountain range vistas are beautiful and so where the buffalo we got to see roaming the mountains. Thanks Gary.
This property was clean and peaceful, with stunningly beautiful views out the front and back and plenty of outdoor seating to take it all in. Gary was a wonderful host, and I cannot think of anything I would improve about our stay. Although the casita feels remote, it is remarkably close to many attractions in SLO County. Our family would love to be able to stay here again.
The house had spacious bedrooms with very cozy beds. The living space was nice, clean, and had everything we needed. Gorgeous views; peaceful setting; and an all-around perfect place for our family to spend the week. We hope to come back the next time we’re on the Central Coast.
Beautiful and relaxing SLO ranch. - heavenly retreat
We were so delighted with our stay. The photos accurately depict how beautiful the location and surroundings of this home are. Although it’s only 15-20 minutes away from the beach or downtown SLO, you feel a world away, ensconced in rolling hills, surrounded by grazing animals and groves of citrus. The owners take a lot of pride in the upkeep and we thoroughly enjoyed the thoughtful touches and cleanliness throughout. We grilled on the lovely patio, animal-gazed, walked about the beautiful grounds and LOVED our stay here.
Gary and Amber are wonderful hosts! They were very accommodating and attentive to our requests. The house has spectacular views and all the accessories and comforts you could hope for. We had a great weekend and would go back anytime, it's a beautiful spot that made for a perfect long weekend!
Our stay for a week at Gary's casita was delightful. Nestled in the hills on a ranch with spectacular views, and an easy drive to SLO. The house is very well maintained, and it had all the amenities of home, making our stay very comfortable. Nice patios to enjoy the surroundings and to relax after a day of cycling and wine tasting. Our host, Gary, is gracious and welcoming. We had a terrific time getting to know him. I will certainly return. Thank you Gary for making our vacation extra special.

The Casita was absolutely beautiful, and perfect for our family to stay in after a long drive from Oregon. Gary and Amber take great pride in their property, and it shows.
They have very clear instructions on how to get to the Casita. It is incredibly well maintained, very clean, and the beds are soooo comfortable! The views around the property are stunning, and it is so peaceful and serene.
It was lovely talking with Gary when we checked in - very hospitable and kind. They definitely went above and beyond, and if we make it down to SLO again, we would certainly choose to stay here. Thank you for everything!
My 3 daughters and I spent a long weekend at the casita and had a great time. Because the property is a ways out of town, we spent the days exploring SLO and the evenings at the property- the kitchen is the best equipped we’ve ever experienced, and the views, vistas and wildlife were enchanting. If SLO has nightlife, we missed it, but we had such fun cooking together, doing a puzzle, and enjoying one another. Couldn’t have asked for a better time!
The property is beautiful! We woke up the first morning and saw deer in the distance, grazing on the hills. The interiors are cozy and clean and the outdoor spaces are straight from a storybook! We had one mishaps on our end and the owners were super understanding and we were really appreciative of that. I do recommend being cautious around the dogs on the property and don’t approach or pet them. Overall, I loved everything about this place and would definitely stay here again!
We were six adults traveling to the area for a wedding, so unfortunately did not have as much time to relax and enjoy the spectacular views as we would have liked.
We appreciated the wine and snacks, coffee and orange juice for the mornings. Communication with our host was quick and easy.
The pictures are accurate. The bedrooms are comfortable and how nice to have king beds! The bathrooms are a bit dated but clean. We didn’t really use the kitchen since our stay was so brief. The star of the place is the vista outside: beautiful and serene. We enjoyed viewing the far off animals with the provided binoculars. Visitors should be aware there are dogs owned by the host which are kept from the house by a radio fence. No need to be concerned about them.
We found access to SLO to be easy and a Vons for quick groceries close by. We did not test the Uber availability for the location, but it looked like it wouldn’t be a problem. The community is gated.
We look forward to returning to the area and thank our hosts for sharing their charming casita with travelers like us 😊
The Casita was an ideal, serene retreat, exactly what my wife and I wanted. The house was atop a hill, 1.25 miles from the front gate. On the road to the house is a lemon grove, a working farm, and livestock (cattle and goats). The landscape is breathtaking, and the Casita is everything we hoped for and more. It was large, comfortable, and immaculate. The views from the patio were exquisite. Gary and Amber made sure there was a bottle of wine, crackers and cheese, and a bottle of orange juice when we arrived. I had a chance to chat with Gary, and he provided excellent advice about restaurants and wineries. While it seemed that we were in a very rural location, we were only a 15-minute drive from downtown SLO. Gary also gave us a bottle of his own branded wine, which was excellent. Overall, this was a perfect stay except for one cool day with a rain shower. But even the most conscientious VRBO host can’t control the weather. We had a magnificent stay at a wonderful home with the best of hosts. We’d love to return and stay longer. Just terrific in every way.

About the host
Hosted by Gary Cushing
I’m a native Californian and settled on this ranch and made San Luis Obispo my home 30 years ago. When I retired from full time medical practice as a Gastroenterologist in 2017, I decided to turn our guest house into a vacation rental in order to share the beauty and magnificence of this unique property with other Californians and people from various states and from around the world. It is truly a labor of love and I have met and hosted so many fine people from all walks of life. It is a pleasure as well as a privilege to share this fine property with our guests.
Why they chose this property
I wanted to be in the beautiful Edna valley where I could unwind after a day at work but still be close to San Luis Obispo and the beaches of the central coast. My heart has always been in the countryside but my interest in fine dining, wine and artistic culture meant I had to chose an area that offers all of those things. I have been so satisfied with my choice of this property to live that I have been here for 30 years. As a bonus, I now get to share it with others!
What makes this property unique
This 112 acre ranch is so very private with open space, grazing animals and just wild enough to create a secluded getaway which remains a short drive to amazing wineries, restaurants, the beaches, coastal activities as well as some of the most attractive, charming small towns in central California. They are all within a short drive from the property! Come stay and enjoy.
