About this property
Neptune's Jewel - an elegant, newly-built studio cottage in quiet garden
This enchanting studio cottage nestles in the garden of the owner's house in half an acre of land at the bottom of Monk’s Hill.
It is 5m x 8m (16ft x 27ft) including a deck leading in to the garden of fruit trees, palms and flowers enjoyed by many birds.
3 mins walk from local grocery store & buses
7 mins walk from small hotel beach & 2 Restaurants
5 mins drive from more beaches & marina & bars, cafes & restaurants
The cottage is designed to be open to the breeze throughout the day & night. Tradewinds blow though the windows (installed with white painted burglar bars, no glass or screens). The bathroom is tiled with Travertine tiles and has a waterfall tap into an Egyptian marble sink.
The beautiful hand-made kitchen has a varnished solid Cedar counter & teak stools, perfect for breakfast or chatting to the cook whilst sipping your glass of wine.
The galley-style kitchen has everything you need to prepare a light lunch or a delicious supper for candle-lit dining on the deck. Best for cooking the fresh fish you may have bought from the local fisherman on the docks is the small BBQ by the deck in the garden.
The wardrobe has ample storage for your clothes, spare linens & beach towels as well as your suitcases.
There is no television. Nature’s entertainment in such a secluded and enchanting setting usually means you don’t miss it. There are plenty of books of every kind available. There is good free Fiber-optic WiFi.
The owner lives in the nearby villa "Casa Lucia" (from October through to June), during which she will be delighted to welcome you and help with anything else during your stay. Unless you have questions or need something, she will leave you alone for the rest of your stay.
Neptune’s Jewel is a few minutes’ walk down a tree-lined lane from the Harbour’s most-loved local shop. Wednesday sees the boat from Dominica arrive filling the shop with exotic produce from nearby Nature-Island Dominica. You can expect to buy fresh herbs, a local (& some imported) fruit & vegetables. All the staples you will need to fill your kitchen. There is also an abundant Farmer’s Market 15 mins drive away and a large modern Supermarket 25 mins drive away for more sophisticated imports. Passion fruit, bananas, mangoes, rocket & herbs grow in the garden (in season).
Catamaran Hotel Beach is 5 mins walk away and Pigeon & Windward Beaches are 5 mins drive (or short bus ride & walk away) and boasts two beach bars. Bumpkins, an informal , locally-run wooden, shady bar serving fish, salad and burgers (and the best Lime Daiquiri’s & Pina Coladas on the island) and Catherine’s Café at the other end with an excellent French chef, a high-end menu and exotic cocktails. Both have live music at weekends. The water is clean and clear and safe.
There are 3 more good restaurants within 10 minutes walking distance and many more 5 mins drive away.
A short stroll down the lane takes you to the main road where you can pick up a bus to town or to Nelson’s Dockyard. They are frequent & inepensive (if a little wild !) There are many car rental companies nearby, the owner can arrange or recommend car rental for you if you require. You can park in or outside the property 50 yards from the Cottage entrance. Taxis are reliable and have fixed prices and one of the best lives down the lane.
Pick up one of the many Airport taxis. Cost is about US 50.
Nearby Activities include a Dive School (with a highly recommended Dive Instructor), Fishing Trips, Sailing, squash & tennis, yoga, pilates & gym. Within half an hour there is kite-surfing school, zip-line canopy tours, cultural tours, donkey sanctuary, swimming with rays, golf, museums & eco tours.
There are some fabulous walks in the area. Including a popular one right outside the door to the top of Monk's Hill where there is an old ruined fort and some of the most spectacular views on the island: Organised walks are another option by the Environmental Awareness Group, the 5 am Hiking Club or a wonderful Rasta taking you through the Rain Forest.
Other attractions are Cricket, Steel drums & Reggae, Local bands, Antigua Sailing Week, and the Antigua Classic Regatta.
There are 2 resident cats "Johnny Rotten" & "Little Tiger" who will likely leave you alone but friendly if you wish to say hello.

About the host
Hosted by Lucy Tulloch

I was born in England and grew up in the Greek islands. I have been living in Antigua for 24 years (with work in England during the summer). I designed and built my house in 2007 and 7 years later build Neptune's Jewel, my studio cottage.
I work from home where I have an Art & Design business. Graphic Design, Photography, Film shoots and Sailing keep me busy. Gardening, yoga, books & music are my evenings.
I have a friendly black cat called Johnny Rotten.

Why they chose this property
Quiet, pretty, natural, self-contained, close to beaches and restaurants & bars.
What makes this property unique
The quietness of the property despite being so close to the harbour activities and the sea makes it unique. The cool breeze through all the open shutters of the cottage makes guests feel they are sleeping right in the garden. The view of the green hills behind the property and the bird song during the day and tree frogs chirping at night confirms the natural beauty of the setting.
