About Victoria:
Victoria has a well-earned reputation as “The City of Gardens”; in April, the cherry blossoms are legendary! It is a safe, friendly city with an abundance of parks and gardens. Victoria is the Capital of British Columbia and the iconic Legislative Building is the crown jewel of the Inner Harbour while the famous Empress Hotel occupies a similar place of prominence a stones-throw away. You’ll find plenty of historic homes, museums, and galleries as well. As a destination city, locals and visitors alike enjoy numerous farmers markets, festivals, and plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities. The water-taxis move people quickly and efficiently around the inner harbour and newcomers enjoy the ‘water-taxi ballet’ on Sundays from mid-May through September. Truly everyone will find something memorable about their stay in Victoria, BC. Of course, one of the best ways to enjoy it is to ‘stay with the locals’; people who have the inside scoop on not just ‘touristy’ attractions but know where the real gems lie, off the beaten track and on the roads less travelled. Here is a brief synopsis of the more ‘touristy’ things to see and do in our fair city. If interested in the ‘roads less travelled’ please talk to us; if we don’t know we’ll do our best to find someone who does.
Our city is made up of several unique and eclectic neighbourhoods. Ultimate BnB is located on the Westshore, 20 minutes from downtown and the Inner Harbour in off-peak traffic; just far enough removed to allow for serenity yet close enough for easy access to all we have on offer. You will find a delightful array of artisan cafes and bakeries along with world-class casual and fine dining restaurants. The Bard & Banker Pub on Government St. features nightly live music, and the licensed and juried buskers are talented and help to liven up a leisurely stroll through Victoria’s eminently walkable downtown core.
There’s something for every taste in Victoria:
For gardeners, a short drive to Abkhazi Garden and Teahouse is sure to delight. Famous for its rhododendrons, tea and light lunches are served overlooking the gardens which are delightful throughout the spring, summer and fall.
Close by at Government House, the grounds at the residence of British Columbia’s Lieutenant Governor are open to the public and feature woodlands, a nursery, cut flower, perennial, vegetable, iris and rose gardens. There is an historic costume museum in the restored Carey Mews and lunch and snacks are served in the Tea Room.
Just a couple of blocks from Government House, Craigdarroch Castle, with self-guided tours, offers four floors of exquisite stained glass windows, intricate woodwork and fabulous Victorian-era furnishings and a venerable peek into our city’s most interesting history.
Near the Castle (about 2 blocks away), the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, is home to one of the most comprehensive collections of Japanese art in Canada, historical collections featuring Canadian and international works, and exceptional contemporary art. New shows are continuously curated and keep visitors and locals alike returning over and over again. As well, you will find a small, but intriguing gift-shop with a chance to pick up something uniquely different from usual tourist fare.
Not far off, Oak Bay Avenue is lined with specialty shops, galleries and restaurants. It famously offers a wee taste of ‘jolly old England’. Enjoy a pint at ‘The Snug’, a meal, or spa treatment at the elegant Oak Bay Beach Hotel. Waterfront dining is a favourite pastime in our city and there are many opportunities to indulge. The famous Marina Restaurant is sure to please. While still in Oak Bay, why not stroll over to nearby Willows Beach with its sand, sun, playground and snack bar for mid-afternoon ice-cream or just a ‘spot of tea’.
Back closer to our city-centre enjoy a leisurely stroll through famous Beacon Hill Park, with a petting zoo, water park and putting green amidst meticulously kept flowers, shrubs, duck ponds, and fountains. A short climb up the hill will offer a stunning vista of the Olympic Mountains providing the back-drop for views of Trial Island, Ogden Point, an array of marine traffic and a distant look at your home away from home, Ultimate BnB on the Westshore.

Ask a questionAbout Laurie Ingalls, Faye Wardrop
About Us: Your hosts at Ultimate BnB are Faye Wardrop and Laurie Ingalls. It took nearly 40 years for us to find each other; another 3 years to ‘test the waters’ before taking the plunge. We married on July 15th, 1995 at Sooke Harbour House, a lovely seaside resort just down the road from our current home. Putting together our Ultimate BnB has been a labour of love. For us, it has been one of those ‘someday’ projects…one we were never quite certain we would actually get to do. Faye: “I come from a business background but my interests include music, food, gardening and travel. In the mid to late 80’s I was the GM at an import/export wholesaler in Winnipeg MB. It was an exciting time for me because we were among the first companies in Canada to develop trade with China and other countries in the Asian Pacific region. In the late 90's Laurie and I operated 2 gift shops that anchored either end of the Victoria Conference Centre in a perfect location right next to the famous Empress Hotel. We loved meeting people from around the world and many came back to visit us year after year. I must have made an impression because I was nominated for the City of Victoria’s hospitality award and won it 2 years running. After the successful sale of that business in the spring of 2002 we took some time for travel before launching our current consulting practice where we fill the CFO(Chief Financial Officer) role for a small group of business clients.” Laurie: “I share many interests with Faye, but with a twist. I am a former professional musician. I graduated Grant McEwan University in Jazz performance in the 80’s while Faye was learning international trade! Several years back I was fortunate to be part of Victoria’s Jazz-Fest as a member of the George Essihos quartet when we opened for Downbeat magazine’s male vocalist of the year, Kurt Elling at Alix Gooldin Hall. In 2000, we were featured on CBC Radio’s jazz show ‘Hot Air’. Search: djingo379 on YouTube to hear some of my work.

Why Laurie Ingalls, Faye Wardrop chose Colwood
In 2008 it seemed like the world was coming to an end. We watched this vacant lot for months while planning our dream home. Finally, we took the leap! We designed the layout with our architect on a scratch-pad over coffee! Watching our home become a reality was almost surreal. So many decisions; so much to think about! Someday I hope to blog about the experience with pictures and stories: check out 'ultimatebnbdotcom'. The suite was designed to be separate from our space; we wanted our guest to have privacy! Over the past few years we've worked away at outfitting the suite with the idea of having just one unit for a Bed & Breakfast. During our time working in tourism we enjoyed all the different people we would meet and but we got a real thrill from helping them discover the 'hidden gems' in our area; the places only the locals would know about. Our hospitality award from the City of Victoria humbled us. That people would take the time to write a letter to the people at City Hall in appreciation was just amazing to us. We always knew we wanted to get back to get back to helping people discover this incredible part of the world. The views from our property on Hatley Drive are world class; some of the finest you will find anywhere on this planet. Our objective from the 'get-go' was to find a way to share it. Our proximity to the ocean is great, but the 565 acres of old growth forest is awesome! The resident deer can be seen grazing outside our door almost on a daily basis. We hate the way the little devils keep chewing our flower beds but we wouldn't have it any other way really. Ultimate BnB on Hatley is more than just a special place, it's an experience. When we travel we so much enjoy the self-catered option for breakfast. We eat what and when we want. We set our own agenda, come and go as we like. If you haven't experienced that as a traveler we highly recommend it. It truly is 'the Ultimate' in vacation freedom and flexibility.
