Excellent accommodations: As promised in VRBO description
A well-equipped, cozy desert home with a spacious, outdoor space as well. Excellent, responsive communication with property manager. Could use another heat source for bedrooms, but it was manageable. Would definitely stay here in the future. Good value for the $$$.

Good lodging near park entrance
Big positives: This is a one-of-a-kind home with early- and mid-20th century nostalgia and memorabilia throughout. Fantastic private outdoor space where you can play a real game of horseshoes and hang out in the sun or under a large covered patio. The home was the perfect size for our family of four. Very comfortable beds. Everything you could need in the kitchen. Quiet neighborhood. Minor negatives: There were a couple of minor bumps, but I imagine the attentive manager has actively worked to resolve them. We received the wrong lock-box code so we couldn’t get in the house upon arrival until we were able to get a hold of the manager. Turns out an email with the updated code hadn’t been sent to us in advance. From reading other reviews, it seems like this was a one-time mistake. The other issue was that several days after departing and after having paid in full, we received a notice that a new fee had been tacked on. The property management told us that VRBO has failed to add this fee regarding local taxes on numerous reservations. That is a problem, but it shouldn’t be passed to the customer after full payment of the agreed-upon cost and then departure. I called VRBO since I had never experienced an owner adding a fee after departure. VRBO told me I didn’t have to pay and I did not pay it. The fee was removed. I hope VRBO and the manager have been able to resolve their fee schedule so that all necessary fees are listed up front. Other than those two little bumps, this was a great find.

This is a cute little house with funky decoration and interesting Cactus in the big yard. It's 5 minutes away from the Oasis Visitor Center, close to the North entrance to Joshua Tree National Park. The owner, Patricia, is a great communicator.

Beautiful desert getaway home
When my husband and I were looking for options to stay in, he really liked this one due to it's proximity to the park. I wasn't completely sold but I think it's because the pictures don't do this place justice. The yard was a lot bigger than I thought and the house itself was very cozy. Loved staying here with all the cool relics and signage around the yard. Even greater was all the wildlife that would pop in.

Charming and Convenient
The Tile House was a perfect choice. It's close to restaurants, the Park, and shopping. The house was clean and comfortable, with everything you could want, and more. When you enter the property, there is a large outdoor space that includes a cactus garden, three different seating locations, and artistic assemblages of found objects with a desert theme, as well as some internation ethnic pieces. And there's an outdoor shower! Inside there is a dining table for 4-6, and there's a smaller round table off the kitchen. The beds are comfy. We spent our time hiking, so we didn't use the TV or couch. The internet worked. They have a lot of basic staples in the kitchen. All communications were flawless.

Home away from home
This wonderful piece of private property was a perfect getaway and we didn’t want to leave. :) It was exactly what we were looking for. Not fancy but so comfortable. A lot of interesting artifacts throughout the place too. The pictures did not do it justice but that said, you’ll be surprised when you arrive. The outdoor shower is actually what sold me to the Cactus Adobe in the first place. Patricia was wonderful - very responsive with great communication. Thank you! We do plan on returning.

Cactus Adobe is A Real Treasure
Outstanding stay at Cactus Adobe. The location was ideal for us - close to the less busy entrance to JT Park and a quick drive to downtown Joshua Tree. The wonderful vintage collectibles and artwork make the place feel like a well-curated museum but also a lived-in home rather than a rental. We marveled at the original tile designs in the kitchen and bathroom. The vintage kitchen stove is a beauty and works perfectly. The outdoor space with its gorgeous cactus combinations offers all the options we needed for morning coffee, afternoon cocktails, dog play, and lounging in the sun. We could live here very happily!

Great Rustic Feel
Wonderful little property near the national park. The property was perfect for my small family of 4 and 2 dogs. The property manager, Patricia, was in constant communication. Small issue with initial check in as VRBO was not the same as property manager's info, but Patricia was great about communicating and rectifying the situation. If you're looking for a place to decompress and disconnect from the world, enjoy the outdoors and play some horshoes, this is the place for you.

Small house with large backyard ideally located close to Joshua Tree NP
Ideally located in a quiet neighborhood, a mere 5 min drive for the Joshua Tree Visitor Center and from supermarkets and restaurants. Place looks bigger than the pictures with a large dinner table in the living room and a large backyard with patio. Idea for a family with two kids. Owner was responsive and friendly. Very well organized check in and check out.

Eclectic to junky
‘Interesting’ old stuff in disrepair. Smell of gas from ancient stove. Ancient refrigerator is noisy. Many electrical hazards. Signs from national park displayed in backyard. Rusty metal cars parts as ‘found art’. Sure, if my relative offered this place for free, wouldn’t mind the junk and would chip in to help fix it up. But as a paying customer, no. Though it does reflect the desert vibe of poverty and poor maintenance, even has the tire planter, just missing the pink flamingos.

Oasis
Smaller than the photos seemed. But better. The details are a marvel. There is a whimsical/nostalgic/ironic/pragmatic sensibility here that will haunt the first time visitor to Joshua Tree or the bazillionth, like me. I think this is something like the definition of an effortless yet submersive Western aesthetic. Surprising to find it here but that seems to be the way the Cal 62 corridor is trending. Or aspiring to. The only thing that marred the solitude I was seeking is a barking dog somewhere down the block. Right now he or she is posting on some canine forum how some uppity coyote, or maybe yours truly, was some kind of bother. That's life.

Cozy place -- works well for an individual or small group
Small but comfortable place with a convenient location. Would stay at again. It would benefit from a few updates -- particularly a shower curtain and a gas stove from a recent decade.

The property was exactly the way it was described. Small for 6 people but comfortable.
It is comfortable for 6 people ( sleeps 6) only if used for sleeping at night. Well stocked. The yard and neighborhood looks unkempt with lots of stuff everywhere but some people may see it as art. The house itself was very clean and well kept. Owner friendly and helpful.

Charming, unique home with laundry and coffee!
This adobe house is absolutely precious and it was a special time to stay here. It is a very unique place on a large lot with lots of interesting plants. The house is in good condition and is maintained nicely. There is plenty of seating in different places around the home. The entry room has a table with two chairs for watching the sunrise or sunset. The washer and dryer are new and worked like a charm. I enjoyed the coffee provided and we picked up the creamer we wanted at the grocery store that is a short drive away. We enjoyed dinner at Palm Kabob House, Kitchen in the Desert, and lunch at Mexican Street Tacos. All three restaurants were amazing. Twentynine Palms is a small city so really anywhere in the city is going to be close to Joshua Tree National Park. It is a fun place with lots of visitors. Tips to future guests: You are in for a treat. Here are a few things to help you know what to expect and how to prepare. The twin beds are 4 or 5 inch mattresses so they are best for kids or teenagers. The queen bed was a thicker, comfortable mattress. I had a little bit of trouble with the queen headboard because it is not attached to the bed. Make sure the bed stays fully pushed up against the wall. The pillows were good and there were extras offered. The heater and air conditioner is just one unit in the living room. It can take a while for heating to reach the bedrooms but it does work. It would be useful to bring a small fan or small heater so you can control the climate a little bit more. Consumable bathroom amenities offered are hand soap, q-tips, and one-ply toilet paper. The photos show shower toiletries but they are not actually not marked off in the listing amenities list and are not provided. Yes, the shower is small but is fine for 95% of people. If you are on the bigger side or are claustrophobic, the shower might not be okay for you. If you are arriving at night, be patient to find the house and entry. Twentynine Palms is dark if the moon is not out, as they keep light pollution to a minimum. That makes star gazing better! And one more thing I didn't know - Joshua Tree NP is open 24/7!!! Only the visitor centers have hours so get out there and enjoy anytime.

Cute Little Adobe House
We went to Joshua Tree National Park (JTNP)for an extended weekend and this little house was perfect for our family of 5 and a small dog. For sleeping arrangements, there was the master bedroom with a queen bed, the back bedroom with 2 twin beds and the front room with a sleeper sofa. For those interested in the kitchen, there was no microwave and the dishwasher wasn't working. However, we didn't need either of these for our stay. The garden is spacious and nicely designed with eclectic pieces of art. Patricia was extremely responsive and even gave us an early check-in. Location wise, the property is close to JTNP and the town of 29 Palms. We took our bikes and biked around the area to restaurants. Wifi worked fine and we had no issues during our stay. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this cute little adobe house.

A true gem ! Cozy, artsy, and cute!
My friends and I decided to take a spontaneous trip to Joshua Tree for my birthday. This was a one of the last three houses left near Joshua Tree so it made it a little scary not fully knowing what we were getting. The photos seemed like a cute house but thankfully it was even better in person!!! We all fell in love with the Cactus Adobe. The vibe all around was just perfect! All the decorations have been thoutfully placed to create a fun and cozy vibe. It was a creative little haven in the desert! Plus Patricia was so amazing to work with she was very kind, flexible, responsive, and accommodating. The only thing we wished was different was that we had more time. I would most definitely book again! I highly recommend this desert gem! :)

About the host

Hosted by Patricia Knight

Host profile image
I was born and raised in Twentynine Palms and spent my early school years at Blessed Sacrament Grade school. My earliest memories are of the incredible experiences ,Playing hiking and camping around one of the most beautiful playgrounds in the world. I went to New York City when my father was transferred there and spent many years developing my career and life there. 2 years ago I took my wife to the High Desert and to my surprise she loved it.( She is a real City girl) We immediately saw that 29 needed new pioneers to settle there.

Why they chose this property

When we found Cactus Abobe it was in very rough shape but when we saw the original tile work done by the homesteader who built it and the obvious love that he put into it we knew it must be saved. All the original details remain but the electricity has been totally redone and, interior and exterior surfaces have been restored. Since there was very little wood on the desert in 1933 The owner followed the early Spanish practice of creating a cactus fence which you can see today. The Garden was started by his daughter and there are many types of cacti which she nurtured. There are Joshua trees which she planted on the property that are quite rare in 29 Palms. We love this place we hope you will also.

What makes this property unique

The biggest benefit is the ease of travel and closeness to the national park whose Main Entrance and headquarters are located on Utah Trail just a few minutes from our house. There are many things to see and do just a short drive away . Route 66 and the Mojave Wilderness are close by.The Gold Mining Dale district is just outside of town. Wonder Valley offers a unique look at early pioneer homestead buildings from the early 1900's. Visit one of the last outdoor drive in theaters in the US at Smiths Ranch Drive In located a few minutes away on Adobe Road. 29 Palms is centraly located and day trips can easily be made to Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley. Just a few miles away is Yucca valley and Pioneer Town with their music scene and antique shops. The village of Joshua tree is a few miles away and has some good bars ( with music)and restaurants. The Noah Purifoy museum is a must see artist vision of the desert exoerience. There is much more to see and do and you will have an interesting experience no matter what road you take
