Stay in Estreito da Calheta
Everything provided. A very warm welcome from Catarina and lots of information.
The fireplace was great as it was a bit chilly in the evenings.
Well positioned for walking the Levados, only 10 km from Rabacal’s wonderful walks.
The pool was cold but only to be expected since it can’t be heated in the winter.
Lovely home with beautiful views!
We spent a week at Casa Na Colina. Catarina met us when we arrived and very graciously welcomed us to Madeira. The house is well-stocked with all the essentials. There were even basic spices, vinegar, oil, tea, and instant coffee to get us started. Lots of firewood was provided for the living room fireplace, which heated the room very nicely. Catarina also offered us juice on arrival, and left us with a large bottle of water. The house is in a very quiet location, yet just a few minutes from a large grocery store, restaurants, and a marina. And Ilidio, the little shop and restaurant just 2 minutes walk from the house, is a gem. We would definitely stay here again. Next time we’ll come when the weather is a little warmer and we can use the beautiful pool!
Surpassed all expectations
This is the 6th or 7th villa that I've rented but the first time I've ever left a review. I'd spent a very long time choosing Na Colina - because of taking my 90yr old mother to an island built on the side of a mountain I needed somewhere that didn't involve steep climbs twixt car parking, bedroom, bathroom etc. Jayne (the villa's owner) was really helpful beforehand - quick to respond to my endless questions on email.
Baaaad journey from the uk when the plane couldn't land and had to be diverted; however, the sainted Catarina waited up until nearly midnight to welcome us into an amazing house where she had provided emergency hot food, cold wine and the reassurance that she could help with any and everything for the rest of our holiday.
We shopped, cooked (fantastically equipped kitchen) and ate in every lunchtime. The supermarket in Calhetta on the sea front sells good cheap wine, clams, great fresh veg and Madeira cake. Then scoured TA for cafes in the evening; by FAR the best of which was Bar O Ideal in Punto do Mar. Altogether had an excellent break thanks to the wonderful house, the peaceful pool, the location, and Catarina's generous efficiency.
Comfortable house with the swimming pool and beautiful view
The house is really great! It is well organised and spacious enough for 2 families, very well equipped, there is evth you need for 2 weeks of holidays. Catarina, the house keeper was very helpful, we received a very warm welcome from her. The location of the house- around Calheta - also to be recommended -easy access to most of Madeira's attractions including the most beautiful levadas and the sandy beach.
Excellant villa in a perfect location
We were after a chilled holiday this year and this villa made it the perfect place to have it. The villa is large, well laid out and had everything we needed, from numerous towels, a brilliantly stocked kitchen (we made use of the lunchboxes a few times) and other little touches that made it perfect. The welcome from Catarina and the welcome pack were lovely and it was no trouble for her to get us some items so we didn't have to venture straight to the shops. Nothing was too much trouble for Catarina, a broken umbrella, replaced within the hour. The views from the villa are exceptional and the pool was used daily for a welcome relief from the very warm weather. With lots of very steep roads around you need a fairly decent car to get about. The little bar/shop 2 minutes walk from the villa does lovely lunches which we enjoyed 3 times. We arrived in Festival time and although during the second week the sound system from the church nearly drove us mad, the festival was great. Such great attention to details and we enjoyed a great night there before we left. We enjoyed some lovely trips out. The Nuns retreat, Porto Moniz, Calheta, Paul da Serra and walks from Levada Nova near the villa (park near the hotel, makes it easier to start), to name a few. A day out in Funchal with a trip up the cable car to Monte and the toboggan run back down was expensive but great and worth it. Recommendations for places to eat, New Era, Manifattura Di Gelato, Convento Das Vinhas and Restaurnate O Forno. Fancy a drink, walk to Sem Idade or the Pukiki Bar (lovely cocktails), both walkable from the villa. A fantastic holiday in a lovely location and highly recommend. Madeira is a beautiful island.
Great to hear that you had an enjoyable stay at Casa na Colina and in the local bars! Catarina will be particularly glad that she made your holiday that bit more special.
The white sandy beach at Calheta is only 5 minutes away by car, where there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, banks, the marina and a supermarket. The gently shelving white sands are ideal for the youngest of bathers while the deep game fishing based at the marina will satisfy the more adventurous.
The recent road, tunnel and bridge developments on Madeira make for an easy 30-minute journey to Funchal or 50 minutes to the airport.
The nearby towns and villages on the south coast- Ribeira Brava (15 minutes drive) or Jardim do Mar (5 minutes) - make an interesting change from either the dramatic north coastal attractions at Santana (1.5 hours) Porto Moniz (1 hour) or Sao Vincente (1 hour) or the mountainous interior of Pico Arreiro (1.5 hours) or Paul da Serra (30 minutes).
A small general store and cafe/bar are only a few minutes walk along a flat , level road. The owner here is very helpful and speaks good English.
