It was a pleasure to meet these clients, and I look forward to meeting again in the future
The owner, Michael, helped out when we had a puncture and sorted out a garage to do the repair. He also looked after the pool. He was available if we needed help and nothing was too much trouble. We would certainly go back.
Typical French Gite. Nice pool, friendly, helpful owners.

Yes, this year, a lot of work was carried out on this house. The kitchen dinning area was extended,
the third bedroom was enlarged, a new handmade stairs was installed and in the swimming pool area, a new fire table was constructed, also a brand new Webber gas BBQ was installed. All these things allowing our clients to have a wonderful holiday experience.
We had to delay this holiday by two years due to covid, however Michael & Clare we so very accommodating. When we finally managed to take our holiday we were welcomed and shown around by Veronica who lives locally so knew all the good places to visit, and eat.
Overall the house was well laid out with everything we needed, the pool area was amazing with the water at a constant 26deg.
A lovely couple, great house and area so would recommend a visit
This house, full of privacy, have a beautiful garden with a great pool. We spend a lot of time there because you also have an outside kitchen. The surrounding is very quiet.
The host, Micheal is very friendly and helpfull.
The only thing is that the house could you some updating. But no big of a deal, its a countrylife house.

Thank you for for the comments. I am pleased the garden was appreciated. It is a hobby of mine always looking for way to make it more beautiful. Also the kitchen was mentioned, I upgraded it this summer with a large fire table for 8.to sit around, As regards the privacy, it is wonderful to have so much space with no neighbors.
It was really relaxing we had our two little dogs with us and they loved exploring the shaded areas. Loved having our lunch around the pool and dinner outside the kitchen door in the shade. Mike was very helpful and easy to get hold of. Only criticism the bedding, towels and mattress were aged and need to be replaced. Looking forward to returning next year.

Look forward to your return next year for you to enjoy new towels, bedding and mattress. and the house, garden and pool again
We had a lovely time making full use of the wonderful outside facility. Plenty of shade for those really hot times - especially for our dog!!. The pool area was brilliant - we spent most of our holiday outside. The best pool we have experienced as it was lovely and clean. Great walking from the house - you can walk to Breuil Barret on the railway - about 2.5 miles or 1.5 miles by road, where you can find a lovely boulangerie and have a coffee. Claire and Michael where always on hand should we need anything.

Thank you Lesley and Richard for your review, especially about the clean pool and its surrounding area. With this current heat wave the shade of the oak trees on the raised garden is very welcome. The location of the house is well suited for walks and cycling. Richard certainly made full use of this element. It was good that you had an enjoyable holiday and we are pleased to have played a part in it. Clare and Michael

Beautiful and peaceful.
The area is beautiful and so peaceful, you really feel relaxed and away from it all! Realistically though you are only 5 mins drive from a fantastic supermarket and very near to major routes.
The house had a fantastic cosy and homely feel with everything you need.
The outdoor area by the pool is where the property came into it's own and we spent more time here than indoors! Amazing outdoor kitchen and seating with speakers for your phone/laptop.
We visited Poitiers and Futuroscope, well worth a visit. Royan for a day at the beach and closer to home the beautiful lake and zoo at Mervent.
Would highly reccommend this property and Michael was a great host! Thank you, we had a fantastic holiday with the family.

This is a lovely property in the heart of the Vendee countryside - very remote and quiet. Our family loved the pool area, with the barbecue and outdoor kitchen close by. In particular, our granddaughter wanted to be in the pool all the time - and contrary to other reviewers, we found it very easy to maintain the pool ourselves.
The only drawback we found was that there was a problem with the drainage in the upstairs bathroom while we were staying. Michael, the owner, did his best to fix it, but it meant that for the majority of our stay, we only had one shower room and toilet instead of two.
The surrounding area is lovely, with lots of nice countryside walks and an abundance of wildlife - we even saw a Pine Marten wandering down the path towards us one day! All in all, we had a wonderful, relaxing week.
Perfect size for a family of four!
Not too big, ideal as a holiday home. The kitchen has all that is needed and sitting room and dining room was particularly handy on the one really wet day that we had.
The big selling point for this property, is the outside space, and particularly the pool area! Many an hour was spent chilling by the pool and most lunches/dinners were had facilitated by the pool area kitchen (hob and BBQ were very much utilised) - which is definitely an asset for this property. Our dog also loved all the different areas of the garden - which is completely secure, so there were no worries about where she was at any time.
The pool itself, was very easy to maintain, and our 14yo enjoyed the responsibility of checking the chemical levels in the pool each evening!
The surrounding area is very beautiful and it was great exploring the woods and the cycle/footpaths with the dog every morning (all very clearly identified and marked by the Vendee department), I found a total of 5 6-8km walks without having to go on any roads - many of which were shaded which was a blessing in the warm summer mornings.
The hosts were very easy to contact and very responsive, and any issues were addressed and sorted quickly.
We would certainly book this property again.

Many thanks to Sarah and the family. A lot of work and thought are put in to the preparation of the house to make sure that the guests enjoy their holiday with us. So, to receive a review, such as this one, helps to make that effort worthwhile. I certainly look forward to their return visit.
dirty on arrival, exterior doors wouldnt lock, we weren't told
the owner would come almost every sunny day 4 or 5 days a week to do the pool chemicals and clean the pool, he was there for the best part of three hours, so we werent able to use the pool at this time and neither felt we could use the pool area.
The house on arrival :- the hinges were half off the cupboard that housed the dishwasher, the door came of completely the first week.
the patio door from the primary bedroom to the garden wouldn't close the first night, all windows and doors on arrival were open wide, the owner had to come back that first night to help close it. It remained locked for the whole of our time there.
the double bed upstairs broke the first week and remained like that.
The pool area - the outside kitchen hadn't been cleaned when we arrived ..fat and dirt on the tiled floor of the exterior kitchen was dirty and remained that way for three weeks. We didn't use it.
Pool dirty - the pump wasn't working properly or at all
pool leaked and was never at a good temperature
MOST IMPORTANT
Three days before our holiday ended, we found the exterior door from the kitchen didn't lock properly, on pushing the door once supposedly locked it opened very easily again. we'd been leaving all our laptops, ipads, passports -everything important - it was available for anyone to wander in and take our stuff
The owner knew this and said it was why he'd put a little wooden block against the door. he failed to tell us however.
a massive deep clean and high maintenance needed

When the clients arrive, I show them around the house, gardens, and outside kitchen area with the gas BBQ, sink, fridge etc, and showing the swimming pool area, the client said he really did not want to be involved with the pool maintenance. In spite of living 25 minutes away from the gite, I said that I would do the cleaning. The problem was that whenever I came, I tried to come early so as not to disturb the clients, Antoine would inevitably appear and engage me in conversation. He had strong views on many subjects and was able to talk about them at some length. I felt I could not ask him to let me get on, he seemed to enjoy this opportunity for discussion. I wanted to get home. But to think I went through all that effort and time and find it is used as reason to give a one star rating!!
I explained to the clients that the best way to secure the kitchen door is to use the shaped piece of oak wood handle to seal this door. In the winter it is effective at squeezing the door very tight to prevent droughts. This method has been in place for nineteen years without any risk to computer phones etc. The house is totally secure.
Since January this year, I have employed labour to help me prepare the gite. We retiled the kitchen and dining room, after having installed a new staircase, build and extented the surrounding garden wall, painted large areas of the interior of the house and repainted all the garden walls, sanding and varnishing all windows and doors. Furthermore, nearly a week was spent cleaning the swimming pool and outside kitchen floors. This requires cleaning with bleach to eradicate blemishes. It is difficult to accept that there is a need for a deep clean!
What I cannot understand is that at no time did the client point out that he had a problem with anything, enabling me to deal with or discuss it or check it was true. He had so many opportunities to do so
I could go on, but it is obvious that this client sees life through half empty perspective rather than half full. It was so very disappointing to read such a review when so much effort is put in to making sure the clients have an enjoyable holiday.
The next clients arrived and so enjoyed there holiday with us that they plan to return next year. Its the same house that received a one star from Antoine!

Lovely hosts but very tired property.
The location was good and grounds themselves are excellent with a nice pool. Sadly that's where the good times end. The house was dirty, tired and in need of some tlc, it also had a weird odour that followed us home to the UK(I think this was maybe because of the amount or Raid fly spray I used to clear the place of insects so maybe my fault). All the pillows were stained and the bed covers had obviously not been renewed for a long time. The towels were also well past there best. little German cockroaches were everywhere, including in clothes wardrobes and all over eating surfaces. we usually done a morning sweep to get rid of them all. We mentioned this to the owner and were told they were european firebugs(they weren't), then I kept a bunch of them to show him and basically said that he did not think they were "real" cockroaches because they weren't big enough!!!!(they were German cockroaches which are small but still spread bacteria and commonly cause diarrhoea). There was also a mouse issue, when we told the owner they came and put some traps down and told us it was just part of being in the countryside which we accepted. What we didn't accept was the sofa bed in main bedroom being covered in mouse poo and base half eaten by them, it was also broken and unusable. No apologies were made for this nor for the rusty unusable bikes in a very untidy shed. The main garden/pool area was also badly needing tidied/weeded and infested with German cockroaches, there was old house furniture also lying about the outside area. This would be an excellent space if properly kept. I doubt it has looked liked the pictures for a long time. Few of the other issues were a leak in the roof and where to put the rubbish. There was a tiny bin so we were told to put all our rubbish in the car port, this sounded like a local issue but would have liked it picked up instead being left to rot next to the house. I was very reluctant to write this review as the owners were excellent and did try to resolve problems we had. There was also a mix up on dates(our fault) so we ended up getting a few free nights which was greatly appreciated but in the end we left a day early. We have seen a lot of replies from owners on bad reviews so expect our issues to be downplayed and made to look minor or our fault but all the downsides have ruined our memories of the holiday. The pictures are not a fair representation of the house.

This is a very strange review for various reasons. After the clients left I received this email on the 24th June from these clients
“ THANKS VERY MUCH FOR HAVING US. WE HAVE REALLY ENJOYED OUR TIME IN FRANCE. IT'S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL PLACE. tHE KIDS THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THEMSELVES TOO. LOTS OF MEMORIES MADE”
Then on 1 August, over 5 weeks later, we had this review. Ironically I received another review at the same time from Fabrice, who had just left on the Saturday, after a 2 weeks stay. His profession is a senior HEALTH and safety officer. A person who would have pointed out if there was a problem with cockroaches. In fact, he gave us a 5 star rating praising the house, pool, garden, and thanking us for a wonderful holiday.
As regards the points raised. We have had the house for 18 years. Never have we seen cockroaches there. Since the departure of these clients, we have been checking thoroughly, especially the kitchen, to see any sign of the cockroaches, and no other clients have indicated that there were any cockroaches present.
There was no mix-up with the booking. As the original booking took in the Saturday night I asked them if they could come a day earlier and leave on the Saturday Morning. I also offered 2 extra days at no charge. To this they agreed.
The old chairs in the garden, these in fact are the most comfortable chairs you would sit on. The client did not associate them with the old sofa in the T.V hit, Friends, or the other TV hit Frasier, with the old easy chair.
Mice, the charm of this house is that it is in the countryside. There is a lot of wildlife. Occasionally a mouse would enter the house uninvited. And hide away. It might hide in a sofa.
The sofa is in the downstairs bedroom, for use when a very large party is using the house. It has
not been used for 2 years. It was unfortunate that this customer chose to use it during a thunderstorm. It appears that a previous client had used it and folded it back incorrectly and broke it without informing us. We have a short period of time to complete a changeover and would not check the workings of the soffa if it was not going to be used.
This year we have the services of a housekeeper, whose only job is to thoroughly clean the house after every client. She is responsible for all the linen provided, ironing the sheets, pillow cases. She also checks to make sure there are no stains!, and that all the towels provided are of the correct standard.
Rubbish bins are collected every other week, with yellow bags, packaging etc, one week and black bags, everything else, the following week. We have no control over this arrangement.
However, we provide extra bins to cater for this. The client did ask me to remove one of the bins to a tip, but the tip will not accept this. In the end, I took the bin to my house.
This year, 5 months were spent on upgrading the house by installing a new staircase, and enlarging the dining room and enlarging a bedroom . Photos of these are shown on our publicity,
and many guests have remarked how good they look.
Also this year, most of the borders have had thick layers of wood chips spread over to reduce the spread of weeds and to keep the borders looking beautiful, as shown in the photos.
They left a day early because the weather had been really bad with thunder and lightning for the last three days and the forecast was for more rain. So they decided to leave a day earlier and I was there to see off and they had said how much they had enjoyed their stay.
It was very sad to read the review as I take the responsibility of looking after clients' holidays very seriously.

Comfortable country house with lovely pool area and views. The photos accurately show the decor, furniture etc. House is in a quiet spot with no near neighbours but only a few minutes drive from amenities. Dog friendly garden, fully enclosed with lots of areas for dogs to snuffle and find shade. House had two wc and two shower rooms which was great. Access to English and French tv. Good WiFi. Owner Michael was easy to contact if needed by phone (I found the messages via the Vrbo app wouldn’t open while I was in France-I don’t know why) and he quickly sorted out anything that we needed help with. Would definitely recommend this property and owner. Thanks for a great holiday!

At first, we were not received by the landlords.
The house was not clean at all on arrival! The house was simply dirty, not maintained and very under-kept. Also the domain was not maintained at all. Absolutely no place where you want to spend your holiday!
We drove straight back home, I think that says it all!
The landlords were not immediately accessible, only after several hours we got feedback. Absolutely no service!
If the landlords claim otherwise, I have pictures of the state of the house at our arrival. These I would certainly provide if you ask for them, unfortunately I can not post them here.
Then you could see there was still dirt on the floor, seats were broken, food remains in the seats, the kitchen sponges were moldy or still hung full of food, the weeds came towards us when entering the domain, ...
In the beginning, we were able to have a conversation with the landlords, who by the way had no understanding and completely ignored the issue.
Now we get no response at all.
Very unfortunate that tenants are treated this way.
So think twice if you want to rent this domain!

About the host
Hosted by Clare & Michael Wallace
Clare and Michael Wallace are owners of the Gite. They had the Gite as their main residence from July 2004 till 2010. During that time, they added 2 extensions; to increase the size of the main bedroom on the ground floor and to increase the size of the lounge. Furthermore, they completed majore works to the garden. When they first arrived, the garden was the old railway line with just the sleepers and rails taken away, leaving a garden with the gravel track and the diches on either side. Work continued in the garden, and in 2016 a swimming pool, enclosed in a wall with out door kitchen was added Then they moved to Fontenay-le-Comte, just 25k, south. Here, at Longeves, they, with the help of their sons, Ian and Jason, built their own 4 bedroom house. Starting this year, 2024, they are having the help of Melanie She will be responsible for the maintaining and improving the holiday experience of our guests. So far this year she has initiated the upgrade to the kitchen to add to the new flooring in the kitchen. She will be looking to refresh all aspects of the house and garden, with painting and with planting.
