About this property

'Beach House' style cabin in secluded valley 1 mile from Bantham beach

UPDATE: Complete new kitchen and bathroom fitted for 2020 . Underfloor heating in bathroom, slimline dishwasher in kitchen with Butler sink and Corian worktop. New solid oak flooring in kitchen and lounge. Emma mattresses on all beds

Set in a quiet valley, 1 mile from Bantham beach (voted best beach in UK and 6th best in Europe by Lonely Planet in 2015), one of only five log cabins at the site, Toad Hall is beautifully presented and equipped.
It sleeps 4 in a double and twin bedrooms (DVD player in twin room), and has a shower room, kitchen area (both of which were completely re-fitted in December 2019) with oven and induction hob, dishwasher, washer/dryer, microwave and fridge with freezer compartment and a sitting/dining area with satellite TV/DVD, PS3, I-Pod/phone/pad dock and a selection of books, DVD's and games. There are electric wall-panel heaters in all rooms, underfloor heating in Bathroom and plinth heater in Kitchen.
Mobile phone signal is poor but there is a landline for guests to use if necessary. There is also now Wi-Fi internet access (but you don't have to tell your kids as it is all hidden away from view).
Outside is a small lawned and fenced area with picnic table. To the front of the cabin there is a decking area with table/chairs and parasol. There is also an external Butler sink for washing sandy/muddy shoes and wetsuits.
The cabins share a communal grass area, bordered by a stream running along the bottom of the valley. Toad Hall has 2 allocated parking spaces. Dogs are allowed (2 max.)

Buckland Park is situated on the road to Bantham and separated from Bigbury on Sea and Burgh Island by the beautiful Avon estuary. There is a seasonal foot ferry from Bantham to the Bigbury side.
It is possible to walk from the cabin to Bantham, either across the fields and public footpaths to West Buckland and down a quiet road to the village, or by walking up the drive, along the Bantham road for about 500 yds, turn right and join a public track which runs along the side of the River Avon to Bantham. The only steep bit is the driveway to the road, which is about a 5 minute walk.
There is a large car park at Bantham beach which is privately run by the Evans Estates. They charge £5 a day for parking but a weekly ticket is £20 and 2 weeks is £30. This is a lovely beach for children, surfers and kite surfers. There are lifeguards May - September. Dogs are allowed on the Ham, a large area of grass and scrub behind the dunes, and also on the beach at the western end - at low tide this is a large area of sand. They are not allowed on the main beach in summer.
Beach facilities are limited to public toilets however there is a mobile caterer in the grassy area behind the dunes during the Summer months that does a great selection of hot and cold food and drinks. You can walk to the village for the shop/cafe and pub. Evening BBQs are allowed on the beach.
Bantham Beach is great for snorkelling and rock-pooling as well as being one of the foremost surf beaches in the UK.

The valley that Toad Halls sits in has a huge amount of wildlife with a large variety of birds including Buzzards, plus rabbits, squirrels, weasels, shrews, moles, owls, bats, badgers and so forth (all seen from the property). Deer also sometimes cross the fields in the valley. In addition, the small farm at the top of the lane has Alpacas (Llamas), sheep, chickens and occasionally pigs (piglets).

During our recent visit there was a Spotted Woodpecker on the decking post plus we also found a Glow Worm in the garden (first I have ever seen!). Best of all, I spend 10 minutes kayaking off Bantham beach with a pair of Dolphins that came to within 20 feet of my kayak and with the water clear enough that I watched them swimming under the boat... exceptionally exciting!!

Due to the sloping site and steps to the cabin it may not be suitable for the disabled.

Easter break

We had a great stay despite the changeable weather. Accommodation was clean with everything we could possibly need for a comfortable stay. We particularly enjoyed bird watching in the mornings and a poster by the window is such a thoughtful touch. Nice area to explore but prepare for narrow country lanes!

A true hidden gem within walking distance of a huge beach. When not walking we stayed in the house as the weather was very cold. It was cosy and extremely well equipped. We are rebooking!

A little gem, in an amazing location.

If you want a quiet and peaceful place to stay, not far from an amazing beach and other beautiful coves and beaches on your doorstep, then Toad Hall is the place to go. Whatever the weather there are lovely walks, small market towns and local businesses that sell everything you could wish for. Toad Hall is extremely clean with everything you could possibly think of to make an enjoyable holiday. The owner goes above and beyond.

Lovely Bantham!

We have just returned from a wonderful week in Bantham. Toad Hall is comfortable and well-equipped and in a lovely quiet location, 5 minutes drive from the beach with lots of birds and wildlife (even a tawny owl). We cooked most nights at the cabin but went to the sloop and the oyster shack for dinner. The cabin is lovely and even with a few rainy days we didn't feel couped up. Such great beaches and walks on your doorstep. We will be back!

A Gem of a Place

What a beautiful location this is in. A hidden valley within striking distance of the beach at Bantham. The wildlife, birds and squirrels, are both entertaining and great to see how many species of birds come and visit the feeders. Very quiet. The place itself is well equipped with everything needed and all nicely laid out with comfort in mind. Thank you to the hosts!!

Our stay at Toad Hall

We've just had a lovely stay at Toad Hall. It was ideally located - close enough to Kingsbridge, and all the facilities it has to offer, but also close enough to Bantham beach for lovely dog walks. Set in a peaceful valley, Toad Hall has lovely outdoor space to enjoy the views - even in the rain we sat outside on the veranda with a coffee in the mornings whilst the dogs could amble round the small enclosed garden. The cabin gave us space and privacy and was very cosy. It was really well equipped - we've stayed in many self-catering cottages over the years and Toad Hall is certainly up there as one of our favourites. It's obvious the owners really care about the property, they had thought of everything - from hand soap to sharp kitchen knives. Everything was also spotless, with great additional extras like playstation and guidebooks. The owners were really helpful, responsive on email and able to answer any queries or questions we had. Nearby Bantham beach is brilliant for dog walking (dog restrictions in the summer, but still plenty of beach for them to run about on), and there's good coast path walks too from Bantham. The Sloop in Bantham is good for a bite and a pint (though busy at weekends). Kingsbridge has all the facilities you'd need, with supermarkets and lovely little individual shops, fishmongers etc in the high street. The Crabshell Inn in Kingsbridge is lovely for an evening meal. Would recommend this property to people wanting peace and quiet yet with all the modcons of home. In fact, it was so lovely we've booked to go back later in the year!

Stay at Toad Hall

We had a wonderful time, we couldn’t have had better weather! Went to the beaches at Bantham and Bigbury. Toad Hall was a great little place, had everything that we needed. Just wished that the road down to the property was a little wider! The Sloop Inn was our favourite place to eat.

Toad Hall Lovely Experience.

We had a lovely stay at Toad Hall despite the horrid wet weather. The cabin was as stated nice, clean and cosy. Roger the owner was excellent in communicating with any queries. Thank you also Roger for the lovely bottle of wine left as a welcome gift. Much appreciated. The only constructive advise which is nothing to do with the property or the owner, due to the weather it was a bit mucky had to be careful not to slip. Perhaps more chippings could be put down on the roadway/parking space. Though appreciate the approach is for other properties too! Would definitely return as found it very peaceful, accomadation excellent which is what we wanted.

Lovely lodge off the beaten track

Great start with wonderful communication ahead of our stay. We were looking for somewhere quiet for a bit of post-christmas chill out time and this was ideal. Easy distance to lots of places to visit. Plenty of nice touches and little extras in the lodge to make it even more fun such as nuts for feeding the birds and beach things (although we were there in Winter!). Highly recommend.

About the host

Hosted by Roger Green

Host profile image
Myself (Roger), my partner Jenny and our kids, Alyshia and Leon currently live in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex.

Why they chose this property

We had been holidaying in the area for some years and would love to have found a bolt-hole but everything was too expensive or just didn't appeal. The moment we drove down the lane into the valley and saw Toad Hall we knew it was the right place, the destiny that we had been waiting to come along. It captured our hearts from that moment and we love it more with each visit and miss it when we are not there.

What makes this property unique

It has just about everything.... in the countryside with great walks yet also really close to some of the most beautiful and diverse coastline in the country (my main hobby is kayaking so it is ideally placed for that). Incredibly quiet with great starlit skies at night. Lots of wildlife. Some fabulous towns and villages close by.
