Alpine rural retreat with fabulous views yet close to lakeside facilities
Roveglio (Bramble Farm) is a beautifully restored early 19th century farm. Five minutes drive up from the lakeside town of Lenno, the air is fresh and scented with wild herbs. Instead of traffic you church bells and crickets.
The Cottage was converted recently for the owners' use, providing a spacious and luxurious home from home for a tranquil break in spring, summer or autumn. Don't take our word for what it offers - please look at the guest comments.
The farm produces prize-winning single-estate extra virgin olive oil and organic hand-made cheese. The animals are kept away from the domestic buildings - but the dogs, goats and rabbits are a draw for children. With the introduction of solar panels, we are now also carbon-neutral.
The location is ideal for walks to Madonna del Soccorso, a World Heritage Site (45 minutes) and the steeper route to the hermitage of San Bernadetto (90 minutes). It is only two kilometres from Lenno and a car is essential. Lenno offers a thriving weekly market, supermarkets, banks and a pharmacy, as well as restaurants, bars, a wonderful lido for sunbathing and lake swimming and the breathtaking Villa Balbienello. It is within easy reach by road or ferry of other lakeside towns, each with their own attractions. Lake Como offers something for everyone.

Pleasant stay, but....
Pleasant stay at Roveglio Cottage, with an amazing view.
However, several inconveniences:
- neighbor dogs (not on leash, barking even early in the morming, one of them come bark on us each time we went back to the cotage)
-beds are not comfortable
-lack of dishes: chipped glasses, deteriorated pan, lack of table cutlery...

Beautiful views, peaceful and wonderful
We had a lovely week at the farmhouse. Antonella, the farmer/housekeeper, is lovely and friendly. It was a great base to visit Como, Milan, over the border to Switzerland to Monte Generoso. Leno itself has lots of lovely places to eat and great for a stroll or people watching from a bar. Hired a speed boat to go on the lake (great fun). Lots of useful information in the file in the house, which was very helpful. Jeanie, the owner, was most helpful beforehand and the instructions for the route to the house were really good. We can see why everyone enjoys visiting the farmhouse and this area. Brilliant holiday! Thank you
We traveled by car, four persons. We called the place magical. As all magical places, you wont get it for free. To arrive physical you might need a smaler but powerful car, and driving routines. The path up to the property (not asphalted, slippery when wet) is both quite steep, curvy and narrow. We had to park our something larger middle-class car at the church (always a free spot) and walk up the last few hundreds meters. We got some training by walking, and help from the kind farmers who helped us with our luggage. The old farmhouse is upgraded to a modern living-estate with good WLAN (the pictures are understate!), two terraces, one covered, and a a hidden garden piece with furniture. The view from the terraces is - again magical - overviewing the see and the mountains. Its an old, charming and healthy house and you might be prepared for some insects. The farmers are working nearby, you will have close contact with them and their dogs. They helped us patiently here and there; I felt save to have them around. While I was mainly relaxing at the terrace, playing a little bit on the well-kept piano, reading in the large library of the house, my family was examining the mountains and the see (still walking distance, we used a shortcut!). Lenno is a sweet village with nice markets and a few restaurants at the seaside. Busses are going frequently. There is nothing you can't do. We had a nice contact and good communication to the owners. Thank you!
A bit steep to get there, but the location is beautiful, and the house is spacious and very simpel but beautifully arranged. As a family you feel welcome by the space and the farming neighbors. It feels real home!
This place is such a gem! We enjoyed it so much!
It was such a pleasure to stay here! From the sound of the church bells to the gorgeous views it was really spectacular!

The view is amazing. There are two balconies and a garden so even in the end of september there is a place to enjoy the sunshine and the view. There is also a lot of soace inside the house. A well equiped kitchen and a good bed to sleep. Antonella is very friendly even we don't speak the same language. In the area there are nice hikes and place to go to. We did have a very nice week!
This comfortable home was perfect for our purposes and would work very well for two couples traveling together. The owner’s dicription of the road up to the house is accurate - it is not for the faint of heart. We tried it the first time but after that we chose to leave the car further down the hill and walk up to the house. Angelina was extremely helpful and checked on us every now and then. As he was driving, by her father gave us a lift up to the house a few times ( much appreciated as we had bags of groceries). We enjoyed cooking in the kitchen and enjoying drinks and dinner on the porch with that spectacular view. The beds were comfortable, the bathrooms very nice and the whole house clean and welcoming. There are steps from the entrance level (where one bedroom and bathroom is) to the main floor where all the other rooms are. The washer and dryer are in a separate room outside the kitchen door, but the room is well lit and the washer works well. The Greenway is an 11km hike along the lake which we would definitely recommend. We would certainly stay here again(but I would make sure our car had a stronger engine for that final hill ). This would not be a good place for someone with mobility issues. We are in our mid seventies, in good health and also like to hike, so it worked for us and we enjoyed the house very much.
The property was absolutely amazing. The pictures hardly do it justice. The drive up the hill was not difficult and we very quickly got used to it... the photos the owners supplied were perfect to lead us to the correct place. Once we got there we could not believe how beautiful it was... both from the deck and its view out toward the lake... as well as a perfectly cozy house that was more than ample for two of us....we didn't even use the lovely bedroom and full bath downstairs. The kitchen was very well equipped and the caretaker Antonella was phenomenally helpful showing us around, putting on the heat when it turned chilly and providing us with fresh eggs and milk from the farm when we ask to buy them. The furnishings were just fine and the bed, which we used in the upstairs bedroom, was very comfortable indeed. But the views out to the lake were astounding and we simply could not take enough pictures to capture what a lovely place this is. We would highly recommend it. In addition the location was perfect a short drive above the town of Lenno, where the ferry to all the major towns like Bellagio stops, and there is a lovely Villa and Gardens to see right near the town. The owners kindly leave a file folder stuffed with brochures describing nearby sights. We only wished we had time in our travel schedule to have stayed longer than the 12 days we stayed. Thanks to Antonella and the owners.

About the host
Hosted by Jeannie Willan
This is Paul and my daughter Emma getting some new garden furniture ready. We're a Manchester-based, Anglo-Italian family. I visited Lake Como while inter-railing and said then "this is a place I could retire to". Imagine my surprise when my then fiancé brought me to see his old family home.
We have been spending a part of our holidays here ever since, involving teenage boys, small children and now teenage girls - not to mention a large number of friends and family members. It simply is a place to share.
And even after all these years we are still finding new delights and things to do on Lake Como. We love the swimming, the walking, the ice-creams, the food, the music and above all the warmth and tranquillity. It would give me enormous pleasure to be able to talk to you, to answer any questions and help you get the most out of your holiday.
Why they chose this property
Roveglio has been in our family since about 1880 - an ancestor was Mayor of Lenno and the family tomb is in Lenno cemetery. So we have a long-term commitment to both Roveglio and Lake Como.
My mother-in-law spent much of the war here - there was no running water or electricity. She and my father-in-law renovated the main house in the 1970s as a retirement project and later converted The Cottage in 1996 for their own use.
We took over the management of the farm in 2006 and since then have been focussed on reclaiming the overgrown woodland, improving the pasture and planting more olive trees - our olive oil recently won Best in Class in the New York International Olive Oil Competition and has been awarded DOP status in Italy.
Roveglio has the most amazing views and, because it is uphill from the lake, even on hot days there is a breeze. You do need a car and a bit of confidence to tackle the steep lane.
What makes this property unique
Set in fields in the fresh mountain air, Roveglio is only 5 minutes by car from the village of Lenno, 15 minutes by foot (longer climbing uphill back)! You can set off on mountain walks from the door or just relax and read, smelling the wild mint and hearing the church bells and crickets, The Cottage has both a dining and a sunbathing terrace, as well an area of lawn and access to the garden. And you are very welcome to visit other parts of the farm - see the animals and taste our cheese and olive oil.
