Large house, plenty of space and had everything we needed. If we needed anything we were able to contact Darren and received a quick response. Couldn’t fault anything. Hot tub was a great bonus as well

We rented this property to celebrate my husbands 60th birthday. The house had everything we needed and we all had a really good time. Unfortunately the weather wasn't kind though :(

Thanks for taking time to write a review. Glad you enjoyed your stay (apart from the weather:).
Overall enjoyed our stay. Loved the hot tub. Beds were comfy. The house was well equipped and well supplied with all the essentials. It was in a good location not far from the italian gardens and lovely views of scarborough bay. Only downside we found the sofas quite uncomfortable which was a shame as everything else was good.

The house itself is a beautifully large home with a lovely garden, it could use a little bit of redecorating but it is clean and made a pleasant base for our stay. Location was amazing was it is really close to lovely walks along the beach. If you have anyone with a wheelchair or walking difficulties then please be mindful that there are steep hills and steps down to the beach, or there is a bus conveniently located on the main road

Thank you for writing a review, great to hear you enjoyed your stay and liked the house and the walks nearby. Thanks for your comments on decoration, always good to get feedback.
For people with walking difficulties there are the cliff lifts which take you up and down from the Esplanade (Prince of Wales Terrace) which is close to the house to the Scarborough Spa complex on the sea front, it is a nice experience using these old Victorian lifts. bus on the main road is good to get into the town centre if you don’t want to walk, the walk into town is around 15 to 20 minutes over valley bridge to the beautiful Grand hotel. :)
We have enjoyed a lovely week away. Remote check in was faultless and we appreciated a 3pm arrival as we were able to drop our bags before heading to the supermarket. House was exactly as described, with all rooms cleaned well. Hot tub was a big hit for everyone, though an outdoor shower would have been ideal. Decor is simple but practical and neighbourhood was quiet with plenty of parking. It provided the perfect base for our holiday and would definitely recommend.

Great location, plenty of space but house needs some tlc
We all loved the location and how spacious the house is. We were also impressed by how well equipped the kitchen is. But with the exception of one bedroom, the beds were incredibly uncomfortable and desperately need new mattresses. The house is lovely but generally looks tired and is in need of a facelift. The same can be said of the garden and the garden furniture as its present condition is not at all inviting.

Thanks Georgina for taking time to review your stay and found the kitchen to be well equipped. Its always good to receive feedback as I was not aware that two beds are uncomfortable, I replaced 4 mattresses earlier this year so I'm hoping it wasn't them so will look into this asap.
I'm in the process of having the full house plastered and painted white, the second floor is completed and we are completing the first floor in November/December so it will be more modern. Also investing in new furniture as a few guests have pointed out that you cannot seat 10 people comfortably at the dinning table or at the outside table so I will be buying new tables and chairs.

A great disappointment and not worth the money
The property has great potential but was dirty and had cobwebs in a number of areas. The bins in the kitchen were dirty and we were left with one tea towel and no spare bin liners. Walls in the bedroom on the first floor were dirty and in need of a coat of paint. The ceiling in the bedroom was also flaking. Curtains hardly fit the windows and the shower curtain in the main bathroom was filthy.Much of the crockery was mismatched and chipped . The hot tub had sediment in the bottom

Thanks Denise for your feedback and I'm sorry to hear you were disappointed with your stay. I have looked into all the points you raised. I did inform you were to find the extra tea towels and towels when I replied to your message on the Saturday night of your weekend stay so hopefully you used those. Cleanliness is something that is disappointing to hear and I have spoken to the cleaning company we use to make extra efforts to check for cob webs. There should have been bin liners at the house and the shower curtain should have been changed but the cleaners missed this for your stay which I apologise for and could have asked them to return to fix this if you had let me know straight away.
The curtains in one of the bedrooms are to dress the window as there is a black out blind fitted to that window.
The hot tub is emptied and refilled with fresh clean water for every guest arrival. Again, if you had let me know when you arrived I could have asked someone to go round to the house to look at this for you.

Property review
A very large roomy property in a quiet location with ample off road parking. A well equipped kitchen with a clean oven/hob and fridge.
The property is extremely tired with the carpets/curtains/soft furnishings/bedding and towels all in need of replacing. The hot tub wasn’t very clean and there was dog poo in various places on the lawn. There was no hand wash, bin liners or washing up liquid and sponges with only one tea towel and dish cloth provided. The owner stated in his email that these items would be provided and if anything was needed to contact him, however we required them as soon as we arrived especially the hand wash. Therefore we had to go and purchase them ourselves.

Thanks for the review Paul, sorry to hear you were not completely happy with your stay. I have looked into the soft furnishings at the house as we have had a busy year with bookings and we have replaced the living room carpet and some of the bedding, we replace towels at the end of the year.
The hot tub is emptied and refilled with clean water every time we have a change over of guests, sometimes there are a few grains of sand in the bottom from being stuck in pipes as some guests get in with sand on them which is difficult to get out. I am disappointed that dog owners do not clean up after their dogs, we ask all dog owners to clean up as its difficult for the cleaners to find and clean everything on a changeover day.
We do aim to supply hand wash and washing up liquid even though the house is self catering. It was just unfortunate that on this occasion the cleaners did not put any out for your stay which I apologise for and would be happy to reimburse you.
Thanks, best regards, Darren

Disappointed
Unfortunately, the property was not as clean as I would have expected. The chairs in the kitchen were very soiled and dirty as was the trays for the oven. We did try and clean them, but it didn’t help. Luckily, we had tin foil.
We found sweets on the floor in the kids bedroom and clothes in our wardrobe.
Th hot tub had sand in it on arrival, we were told that it was checked everyday and that new tablets were added to the dispenser daily. We did check with the owner, but he is probably not aware what happens. We were told on leaving when the tub was being emptied-- we put all the tablets in on day 1 and they should last all week. They were gone by Sunday!!
The property really needs updating because it is a lovely location, but we will not becoming back. Some of the family did book to come back to the area next year whilst we were there but to a different location.

Thanks Susan, sorry you are disappointed...
I've replaced the chairs in the kitchen with some wooden ones as cream material covered chairs did not last long in a holiday home as not everyone is as clean as you.
The cooker is stripped and cleaned professionally every 3 months but some guests do like to leave cremated chips in the oven which the cleaner does clean but it sounds like she missed it this time. I would have been happy to ask the cleaner to return to clean the over if you had let me know or I could have bought some new trays for you to use.
As I said to you on the phone, does get sand in it from previous guests although we ask guests to shower before using the hot tub they don't and leave sand in the bottom of it. The hot tub maintenance company do change the water after every check out and do their best at getting all sand out but sometimes there is a teaspoon of sand remaining. I have asked them to try harder to avoid disappointment.
The tablets we use in the hot tub dissolve into the water, if you added a tablet every time one dissolved then there would be too much of the chemical (Bromine) in the water and your skin would peel off when you get in the hot tub. Once the tablet dissolves into the water it is then in the water working its magic of keeping the water clean.
I'm having a new kitchen fitted in Nov21 and doing various renovations.
Glad to hear some of the family going back to the same location, it is a beautiful area. All the best

Property looked better in the photos online. I was under the impression there was a large garden but photo was misleading. The property needs to be upgraded - the beds were fine but whole place looks tired. Host was very nice and helpful

Great thanks Linda, I'm always surprised when guests barley say anything positive in a review, the house is large, located in a lovely quite tree lined street close to the sea with plenty of free parking on the private driveway with summer house in the garden next to the hot tub!
Sorry to hear you think you were mislead with the photos online. I assure you the photos of the garden are taken on my phone and are not extended in anyway. For me and many other guests the garden is large, I suppose it depends how you differentiate large.. You can’t ride a horse around in it but you can certainly play football with the kids or throw a ball for the dog. The photos of the house are of the house but I suppose you can't see every detail in a photo. I do decorate and maintain the house constantly as it is a large old house so requires lots of maintenance. This November a new kitchen will be fitted along with annual decorating.
Had a great time celebrating a birthday with family. The host was very prompt in responding to queries. The property was a great size, clean and loved the hot tub

Great to hear you enjoyed your stay for your family celebration! Thanks for booking and for the review, all the best. Darren
Excellent facilities in this house, loads of space for the family, (4 adults and 5 kids). Everything you need when away from home, very well equipped. It is close enough to the sea front, 10 minute drive or 20 minute walk so not too busy or noisy from tourists. The owners were very helpful, answered all of our questions quickly and gave us all the information we needed. I can definitely recommend this house for a family break, we all had a fantastic time. We will be booking again!

Many thanks for your review Kirsty, great to hear you and your family enjoyed your stay! Look forward to welcoming you back in the future.
We had to book somewhere at the last minute and as this had a hot tub it ticked the box and it did not disappoint as the hot tub made it!! The location is around the corner for the sea so it's great for dog walks and beach and also for walking into the main town of Scarborough. We had not visited this area before and were pleasantly surprised about how beautiful the beaches are and how gorgeous the coastline is, highlights were Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay. Scarborough is also great though and has plenty of restaurants, ie a good place for a base. The house itself is basically furnished but does the job as described. I would say that it's ideal for a family gathering. or a hen party. The owner could not have been more helpful. I would not hesitate to recommend the house for a stay as there is so much to do on the doorstep. It also has wifi and netflix which is good if it's raining, and there's always the hot tub which is fitted with lights and is fully heated and seats 7 so that was brilliant. The garden is also secure so great for doggies.
Communication with the owner was excellent and the information provided was comprehensive.
The house is in an excellent spot for scarborough and filey and ideal for anyone with dogs as the walks are very close. The hot tub was excellent even in october, my grandson loved it.
The board games in the cupboard came in handy for games nights.
Would definately stay here again

About the host
Hosted by Darren Wordsworth
Father of two boys aged 5 and 8 and lived in Scarborough for many years. We bought the property in 2009 and have put a lot of time and effort in renovating to a good standard.
Why they chose this property
The location is great, on a quite tree lined street with not much passing traffic. Being able to walk out of the door down to a beautiful little beach or walk through the Italian gardens is fantastic. We prefer older properties and this house has plenty of charm with many original features such as the stained glass window and round window at the front of the house. The house is also very large so there is lots of space to have family to stay. Garden is very large with plenty of grass to play football with the children.
