We are delighted you enjoyed your stay at our cottage and appreciated what it has to offer. We’d be happy to host you again whenever you’d like like to return.
Many thanks.
We couldn't wait for our stay at La Bugerie but have to say we didn't expect to fall in love with it on sight, it was just perfect. Clean, homely and incredibly private. We felt at home the minute we stepped through the door.
The pool is the cleanest and nicest pool we have experienced renting a Gite and when we attended a wedding during our stay at a Chateau with 3 pools, felt pretty lucky as it was nicer in comparison.
We didn't spend much time exploring as we were quite happy just to stay put.
We would totally recommend this spot of paradise apart from the week when we next want to visit!

A relaxing week in La Bergerie
We can only agree with the previous reviews that have been submitted for La Bergerie, a wonderful find in the tranquil French countryside.
My partner and I took my mum and her parents for a week in late June at La Bergerie and found it to be a well equipped, clean and well maintained cottage. The bedrooms were all comfortable with quality mattresses and the kitchen has all the utensils you'll need including several cork screws and we loved the baguette holder!
Whilst the weather could have been slightly warmer we barbequed most evenings and enjoyed the peace and quiet of rural France. It must be said that our parents were surprised at just how many bottles of wine were consumed whilst watching the world go by.
We visited the local Roman remains, had trips to Cognac (1 hour) and Bordeaux (1.25 hours). We would happily recommend The Cottage restaurant and the Auberge on the estuary, both excellent food and very friendly staff.
All in all a great stay and we would be happy to recommend and also hope to return.

We fell in love with this beautiful cottage and are already thinking of coming back next year. The house lies in a quiet hamlet about 10 minutes east of Meschers, set back from the main road. The garden, enclosed by tall hedges, is a peaceful, private oasis with plenty of space for kids to run and play. The pool feels huge since it's all yours, is well maintained, and the cover offers peace of mind with small children (once you master the manual!).The main house has a spacious living/dining area with a very well-equipped kitchen, a double bedroom, and a bathroom. The annex, accessible via a sunroom with another dining area, offers an additional double bedroom, a twin room, a second bathroom, a separate toilet, and a utility room. All rooms were clean and practically furnished. We ate every meal outdoors under the shaded pavilion with a charcoal grill.Communication with our host Dianne was warm and helpful — she responded promptly and solved a plumbing issue quickly. Thank you again, Dianne, you have been a perfect host!If anything, we missed mosquito screens — kids forgot to shut doors, so evening mosquito hunts became routine. Quiet fans helped, but we couldn’t fully adjust. I understand that installing window screens isn't feasible in this house because of the shutters, which then couldn't be closed from the inside. In short: a well-equipped, peaceful, and charming holiday home with a touch of luxury at a fair price. Perfect for families or a group of friends.

We hope that you will consider staying with us again in the future.
A property in an excellent location for visiting local area/ attractions. Lovely to come back to such a peaceful location after a day out. We loved watching the birds bathing and drinking in the pool. Unfortunately, the weather was one of the coolest weeks for the area but having the conservatory made all the difference. It was lovely and warm to sit in for our card games in the evening. The property has 3 bedrooms, 2 of which are in a separate area to the main bedroom, nice for some peace! Thank you for a lovely stay.

Thanks for your positive feedback on our property. We are delighted that you had an enjoyable stay and were able to visit as many of the lovely places nearby which make this part of France so attractive. It's a shame that the weather wasn't better for you, but so pleased that having the conservatory overlooking the pool and garden enabled you to enjoy the evenings in the warmth. We also find its an ideal place for family games and entertaining! Hope you will consider our place in the future for your French holidays.

Beautiful garden, peaceful and relaxing
The house is set back from the road in a very quiet hamlet. At first glance we were unaware of just how beautiful and secluded the garden would be, there is ample space for games and the pool is large enough for swimming laps, it's also clean and was well maintained.
The house was surprisingly spacious, with two bedrooms and a new shower room set on one side of the property, accessed via the conservatory (which runs across the width of the house and looks out onto the garden).
The surrounding countryside is beautiful, with fields of corn and sunflowers amongst vineyards. Cycling to the shops in Cozes or down to the sea at Talmont was easy and the views are spectacular.
Dianne was also very helpful and positive, happy to help with anything, the owners have put a huge amount of work and love into the renovation.

Beautifull Gite set in lovely countryside
We rented this lovely property for two weeks with our family. The cottage is well appointed and suited our needs well as I am disabled and it is all on one level. The pool area was fantastic and our granddaughters even swam in the light showers that we had in our first week. There are lots of places of interest in the surrounding area and we especially loved the Village of Talmont with all the artisan shops . We will definitely visit again .

Wonderful family holiday
Our family of six had an absolutely wonderful time at the cottage. We were exceptionally lucky with the weather which allowed our children to take full advantage of the fantastic pool- which was impossible for us to tear them away from. The surrounding area was beautiful with lots of places to explore, excellent restaurants nearby and cycle trails to some lovely beaches. Would highly recommend and certainly hope to return sometime soon

Nice location & pool, bathrooms very disappointing
Pool lovely, location very good & private but really let down by the antiquated bathrooms/toilets. These need to be totally ripped out. Not great the fact the main toilet comes straight out onto the small kitchen. The showers & toilets were really tiny and so old they spoilt the trip for us personally. Also, the equipment in the kitchen e.g fridge/ oven need a total revamp. TV was tiny ( 17 inches ). Not even one T towel in the kitchen either ( although the crockery/ glasses were fine). Bed and Bedding comfortable – shame very little hanging space. We felt the house needed more money spent on it especially the toilets/ bathrooms.

Response from VrboOwner on 6 March 2020
Thanks for your constructive feedback, Sarah, we always value our guests views and appreciate your comments and suggestions.
We are glad you appreciated the location and pool facilities, and are sorry that you felt the bathrooms/toilets let the place down; indeed we are of course saddened that these spoilt the trip for you.
This is the first negative feedback we have experienced in all the time we have had guests staying at La Bergerie so naturally we are surprised by the points you raise and want to ensure we understand what we can do differently to allow our guests to have an enjoyable stay with us.
Feedback from previous guests has consistently suggested that La Bergerie offers a tranquil and relaxing place to spend a family holiday, with comfortable accommodation and good facilities, a well-maintained pool and close to some of the best beaches on the Atlantic coast.
As we indicated in our e-mail correspondence with you following your stay, we routinely review facilities offered, equipment etc. at the end of each season to identify improvements required prior to the next season. However, in light of your specific comments we will be focussing this years review on the bathroom facilities and kitchen equipment and can assure you that any improvements identified will be implemented ready for summer 2017.
Kind regards Dianne and Dean

Fun & relaxing in France
We have spent a number of very memorable holidays at La Bergerie. It has always been fun for the whole family, but Mum & Dad have really appreciated the peaceful ambience of the house and garden to be able to fully relax and wind-down away from the pressures of work.
There are lots of things to do locally with the children - the lovely beach at Meschers; the brilliant zoo and fantastic beach, sand-dunes and surf at La Palmyre; exploring the Roman history of the area at Saintes, and of course La Fa, which is practically on the door step. We also went canoeing at Barzan among the little streams and drainage ditches - very tranquil, and teeming with wildlife.
Its great cycling country too – not too many hills – and many intriguing villages, ports and hamlets within easy reach to explore. Talmont, just 20 mins away by bike, is a delight. Its a little like a quaint Cornish seaside village – lots of interesting arts & crafts shops, cafes and ice-cream!
Back at the house we enjoyed chilling-out in the lovely quiet and secluded garden and soaking up the sun, or having fun messing around in the lovely pool. Then in the evening we would BBQ in the garden, and then watch the swifts dive-bomb the pool as dusk fell. Enchanting.
The house was spotlessly clean and had all the amenities you could ask for, including some great board games and jigsaws which kept the children amused on the few wet days we have had there.
We found some great restaurants in the vicinity, especially in the port Mortagne, and Le Cottage in the local village – great food and service, and they speak English too.
We would highly recommend a holiday at La Bergerie, and are already looking forward to our next visit.

About the host
Hosted by Dianne Grant
We live in North Yorkshire, England but have always loved holidaying in France with our twin daughters and over many years have explored a number of regions. We kept coming back to this part of Charente-Maritime so decided to buy our own home here and it has become our ‘retreat’ , where we have shared many memorable holidays with friends and family.
Why they chose this property
Arces is a small village among a friendly farming community and benefits from an excellent bar/restaurant and ‘epicerie’ and the workshop of a local artisan sculptor. It's such a relaxing place to spend time, in a tranquil rural setting amid fields and vineyards and yet only a very short distance from some of the best beaches in France. And with lots of opportunities close by to get involved in a wide range of activities including horse riding, golf, cycling, walking and all the water sports you can think of! And the resorts of Royan and La Rochelle, towns steeped in history like Saintes and Cognac, the beautiful Ile d’Oleron and the city of Bordeaux all a short drive away.
What makes this property unique
La Bergerie is equipped for all your family's needs and offers the opportunity to ‘get away from it all’ by enjoying the large garden, with plenty of room for outdoor games, swimming in the pool, or just relaxing and enjoying the sunshine for which this region is well-known. Or within a short cycle ride are some beautiful sandy beaches and the port at Meschers, with bars, restaurants and shops, the picturesque Romanesque 12th century church at Talmont and the busy market town of Cozes. And a short drive gets you into the wine-growing region of Bordeaux boasting some of the finest wines in the world or the prime Oyster and Mussel beds at Marennes-Oleron if your tastes are more gastronomic!
