About the host
Hosted by Robert and Monica Hastings
Robert and Monica are a retired couple. Robert was a senior lecturer in Italian Studies at Manchester University. Monica was a teacher of English at Withington Girls School. They bought their property in Abruzzo over 40 years ago and in their retirement spend 3 or 4 months of each year there, enjoying the beach, walking in the mountains, harvesting their olives, figs, cherries and plums, and visiting the many places of interest in the region. Their property has been fully restored and they let parts of it to holidaymakers. (In addition to the bungalow, there is a ground-floor flat, converted from an old stable, also advertised on this website.)
Why they chose this property
The bungalow is well appointed, recently restored and full of character. The beach is less than 5 minutes away by car, and you can be up in the high mountains in about three quarters of an hour. There is golf at Miglianico, just 4 miles away, and skiing in the winter 25 miles away at Passo Lanciano. Abruzzo has a wealth of unspoilt natural scenery, including 3 national parks and one regional park, picturesque hill-towns, castles, ancient abbeys and mountain hermitages, significant Roman remains and an excellent tradition of food and drink, based on natural local ingredients.
What makes this property unique
Conveniently placed for the beach and the mountains, with all necessary facilities (supermarkets, shops, banks, bars, restaurants, etc.) within easy reach, but sheltered and secluded at the same time, in a beautiful rural environment.
