THINGS TO DO AND SEE:
1) PONTA DA PIEDADE (LAGOS)
With a magnificent view of the Atlantic and the shapes of cliffs carved by the sea and time, Ponte da Piedade is an idyllic setting of cut out rocks that sharply contrast with the greenish blue waters below. Located 2 km from Lagos on the Costa d’Oiro and full of grottos, unknown bays and quiet beaches, the Ponte da Piedade is particularly captivating when viewed from the sea.
Long, narrow stairs lead you down to a small cove where pretty boats wait for visitors wishing to explore this natural paradise. Experienced fishermen wind their way expertly through the gigantic stone sculptures whilst revealing their names and secrets.
Those daring to climb up 182 steps to the top of the lighthouse will have a view of the Ponte da Piedade promontory, which marks the limit between land and sea.
2) CABO DE SAN VINCENTE (Cape St Vincent, SAGRES)
6km from Sagres is the most south-westerly point in Europe and offers amazing views and walks. The lighthouse and cliffs at Cape St Vincent are a fantastic trip from the villa, and a great place for a picnic lunch. There is plenty of parking and visitors can walk the cliff paths and climb the lighthouse tower when open. The lighthouse was built on top of a 16th century convent.
3) ZOOMARINE (GUIA)
Zoomarine is a fantastic marine park can watch shows with dolphins, seals and sea lions, tropical birds and birds of prey. You can also find an amazing aquarium with sharks, Cinema4D, attractions, amusements and swimming pools.
4) SLIDE N SPLASH WATERPARK (LAGOA)
A great day out to a nearby waterpark for the whole family with slides, lazy river, kids play pools, restaurants.
5) LAGOS ZOO is just a 15 minute drive from the villa.
We love this zoo for our grandchildren. It’s ideal for smaller children and buggies as it’s flat and includes a small farm, lots of beautiful tropical birds, primates, giant tortoises, meerkats etc. Everything is very accessible for the children to see and there’s a small café and shop onsite.
There’s a wealth of beautiful beaches near the villa, from the beaches at Luz and Burgau to the larger beaches at Meia Praia in Lagos and many, many others.
OTHER SPORTS & ACTIVITIES:
There’s a wealth of other attractions across this area of the Algarve including the fortress at Sagres, the historic town of Silves and its castle, river boat trips from Portimao inland, shopping at the Guia complex and the annual international festival of sand at Pera. Plenty to keep you busy if you can drag yourself from the poolside at Casa Bonita!!
Burgau Sports Centre offers a range of children’s sports including tennis, football, hockey, touch rugby, running races, swimming races, diving competitions, baseball & rounders. Luz has a watersports centre offering jet skis, banana boats & windsurfing & the marina at Lagos offers boat trips around the coast, as well as dolphin watching and glass bottom boat trips.
About Jennifer Turkington
Our family loves spending time at Casa Bonita. My husband and I are regularly at the property either ourselves or with varying members of our extended family (parents, siblings and children). The villa is great to spend time in on our own soaking up the views and relaxing in the sunshine (we've had some lovely weather even in December & January!). It's also great when it's full of the noise of the children playing, splashing in the pool and long lunches and dinners on the dining terrace.
Jennifer Turkington purchased this villa in 2005
Why Jennifer Turkington chose Praia da Luz
We fell in love with Casa Bonita on our first visit even though it was only half built at that point. The views are just amazing and our main thought in designing the house, garden and pool deck was in maximising those. We're a mixture of sun and shade lovers so we ensured we had a good balance of shaded terraces and deck area for the loungers. We love this area, Luz is a beautiful village with cobbled streets, bars, restaurants, cafes and a gorgeous beach with childrens' play area. We also like to wander into Burgau and have a lazy lunch on the beachfront restaurant before a slightly slower walk home! Lagos itself is beautiful to walk around, the cobbled streets are gorgeous and have any amount of great restaurants (Italia, Dom Sebastiao, Dom Henrique. We also like the marina and cafe Oasis.) There's always street entertainment in the summer months and the beautiful old carousel in the centre of the town is a great hit with the children. We think we're ideally situated here to have a little bit of peace and quiet but perfectly accessible for the towns (we often taxi into Lagos for a night out) and sightseeing further afield. We've travelled up to Lisbon and spent a night or two on different occasions and the motorway makes it an easy run up and back. We're also just over an hour from Faro airport and, again, the attraction of the easy motorway journey almost door to door appealed to us for long weekends and travelling with the children.
What makes this villa unique
Personally, my favourite bit of the house is the living room terrace. The views are just magnificent. We have it set up with cushioned outdoor sofas and I could easily spend a day there from breakfast when it's in sun, through to the best shade in the middle of the day and into the evening as the sun comes down and the moon shines out over the sea. We put in windows along the west side a couple of years ago so that you can even sit out there if you get a cooler autumn or winter day! The views from the master suite bedroom and balcony are also just breathtaking. We've had a number of our guest reviewers comment that waking up with that view has been the highlight of their stay. Off season we get lots of golfers staying at the villa, as we are so well positioned for a range of championship courses (Boa Vista, Palmares, Villamoura, Pestana are all nearby). The villa works brilliantly for those who don't want to be based at a course but have them very near at hand. And because we have 2 master suites and all bedrooms have their own private bathroom we find it makes excellent value for groups of couples travelling together. We offer discounts off season for smaller groups too so don't hesitate to get in touch about those.
