Opposite Dartmouth, Kingswear is a friendly all year-round village with the kind of charm that makes you feel as though you’re really in Devon. There are ferries over the river every 5-10 mins running until late.
Chapel House holiday cottage is just a few minutes walk to Kingswear’s two excellent pubs, general store/off-licence, post office, bistro, two cafés, steam railway station, bus stops (to Brixham & wider Torbay) and the ferries. Kingswear lies right on the South West Coast Path near to Devon’s beautiful family friendly Blue Flag beaches.
Please be aware the property is situated on a narrow lane (signposted as 6"6) and may not be accessible for some cars. Best to approach up the lane by foot, a short (approx. 25 meters) but steep hill. There is a drop-off point at the end of the lane and the Marina parking is a short walk away.

This property is excellently equipped in an ideal location to explore Devon. The host was extremely helpful and communicated well. Loved the local amenities especially the 2 pubs down the road!
A delightful cottage, beautifully appointed with everything one needed in the kitchen and utility room. Absolutely everything was of the highest quality and was a joy to use. Gorgeous views from every room.As two elderly ladies luggage and the hill was a problem, but we had known about this before booking and we became more used to it as the week went by!
We loved Chapel Hill! Kingswear and Dartmouth are such cute towns with much to see and explore. The house was perfect - fantastic views from the upstairs and well equipped with everything we needed. We would definitely stay again!

Thank you Fiona, hope you can stay again. So pleased you had a good time. Colin
A lovely property, with fantastic view over the river towards Dartmouth.
The hill to the cottage is quite steep and so are the stairs inside the property, but well worth it.
Wonderful house. Fully equipped with all that you would require for your stay, with the most incredible view over the river.
The perfect base for exploring the area. So pleased that we chose to stay in Kingswear. Highly recommended, and look forward to returning to Chapel House again in the not too distant future!
We had a very enjoyable stay in Chapel House. The house is a great place to relax and take in the wonderful views over the river. It is well equipped with comfortable beds & sofas. There are some great walks from the house with Dartmouth just a short ferry ride away. Very good breakfasts available 2 mins down the road at Ebb & Flow. Netflix was an added bonus.
We had a lovely week in Chapel House.
It is in a great location, and the views are stunning whatever the weather .
We enjoyed have coffee in Dartmouth , taking the ferry across the Dart .
Did the round robin and before we knew the week was over.
Chapel House is a great place to stay
A lovely relaxing week in Chapel House overlooking the amazing views of The River Dart. We enjoyed sitting on the veranda with either a coffee or wine it was so peaceful! We had amazing coastal walks and I think we’re certainly a bit fitter than when we arrived!! Colin was a great host and replied to any queries we had. We are so pleased we found this little gem well worth the visit!
Great property. Comfortable, with good facilities. Fabulous views day & night. Good location for sightseeing too. Would definitely recommend.
If there’s one minor thing I’d suggest… emphasise that the stairs are steep in the description & the rope handrail could do with replacing as it’s jolly grubby & not v hygienic. Thanks for a fabulous stay!
There is nothing that I could say that would have improved our trip (well, apart from being able to be stay longer that is!) The cottage is faultness; its location superb (albeit up a very steep short hill) and with a view to die for!! Colin was a wonderful host; and responded to messages very promptly, right throughout the booking process and during our stay. Would highly recommend and we'll definitely go back again.

Thank you Alan and a pleasure to have met you. Please do visit again.
Great return visit! Views from lounge, dining area and balcony are stunning. Great to have en-suites to both bedrooms too. The attention to detail on cleanliness wasn’t as great as my first visit though. There were about a dozen dirty glasses, cups and plates, so I had to run everything through dishwasher on arrival and as I pulled back douvet the sheets had lumps of dirt on them. Other than that the place was v clean. I’m sure these can be resolved swiftly to resume usual great standard.
This is a well appointed property in a peaceful location. It is as described, having beautiful views from every room in the house and all the rooms are clean and comfortable.
It is set in a good location for exploring Dartmouth with ferries always available to take you there. You can find plenty of things to do and to suit all tastes. We ventured up to Dartmoor as well as to more local places.
Just one thing to note . Chapel House is is set on a very steep hill so if you have mobility problems it might not be suitable.
I could say a lot more about about how lovely Chapel House and it's location are but suffice it to say we had a very enjoyable holiday

Beautiful little house with stunning views
Chapel House is a wonderful hide away with stunning views from each of its windows!
Situated in the very heart of the old city of Kingswear this little House is a lovely home for holidays. Every morning we enjoyed breakfeast with beautiful views over harbour activities and the little steam train running below. The description is fully accurate and the house provides even more with two equal bedrooms, two bathrooms and a lovely sitting room and kitchen lounge. Everything is very tidy and newly equipped and renovated. We really didn‘t want to leave it again!
Round the corner you find „steam packet Inn“ which became our dining room with really nice food and friendly people.
We did the round trip by steam train and boat and also visited the beach at Blackpool (which awfully has got pebbles, no Sand, but a very nice surrounding). Dartmouth on the other side of the bas is easy to visit by Ferry and worth a trip.
The owner Colin Marshall and his manager were very helpful when we forgot some of our clothes. We can highly recommand this beautiful house; it was the most beautiful accommodation of our roundtrip along England‘s south west coast!

Thank you Katja for such a nice review and i'm so glad we were able to reunite you with your belongings. "The Steam Packet", our local, is a brill pub with great pizzas! Please stay in touch, Colin
Danke Colin!!!!
Spotless with great views across to Dartmouth and over the Marina. Very well equiped throughout and with two comfortable bedrooms both having en suite's it is perfect for two couples sharing. Lots of walking and great places to eat in Dartmouth, which does involve a short ferry ride but thats part of the fun. Would definitely return.
We stayed for a week in May 2022 and will be returning.
The property was great for a couple, two couples or two adults and two children, with having two large en-suite bedrooms this made it easy. The property was in the best location and the views where fantastic overlooking the Marina and Dartmouth. Colin's interaction and information before going was second to none and the property was well presented and clean. We enjoyed taking the lower ferry or passenger ferry daily to Dartmouth for breakfast. 1st class stay and will be re-booking!!
though not very attractive on the outside, this house was of a very high standard inside.. all equipment worked efficiently though we did not locate the DVD player. Access was difficult, including unloading of a number of items of luggage.
We loved this cottage. It is in a stunning location, with beautiful views across the Dart estuary, and easy access to Dartmouth and coast path walks. The cottage itself is comfortable and very well equipped, and Colin was a very helpful host. We hope to visit again.
This is a lovely house with great views across to Dartmouth. The lower ferry is a few minutes walk away and we hardly needed our car after we arrived as there was plenty to do in and around Dartmouth and Kingswear. There was no problem getting the car parked after the first night when we arrived late on the middle day of the Regatta. Even then we managed to move into the Marina car park after the evening fireworks had finished.
We will recommend the house to family and friends :-)
We had a wonderful stay at Chapel House. From the moment of booking, Colin made us feel very welcome and communication was great.
The house itself is in a great location just a few minutes walk from the Kingswear Ferry, the steam train station, a small post office, cafe and a couple of pubs.
We enjoyed a couple of great dinners at the Steam Packet Inn- booking definitely recommended!
Chapel House was a fabulous property. It was spotlessly clean, quiet, nice and dark at night, with comfortable beds and hot, powerful showers. It has been furnished really nicely with a nautical theme giving it character. And we loved having lots of books, games and maps as well as little touches such as tea, coffee and kitchen roll etc which all made it feel like a home from home.
And the views...wow! Spectacular views from every room meant that eating in and coming back for a G&T on the balcony was a real pleasure.
Thank you for a wonderful stay. We hope to come back and visit again!

About the host
Hosted by Colin Marshall
Hello I'm Colin.
I've been enjoying the delights of Dartmouth for several years after visiting with friends one New Year.
I looked at many houses for over 18 months and fell in love with Chapel House in the Autumn of 2017.
I have lived in and around Kinver, South Staffordshire for most of my life. I'm a regular in Kingswear and love the friendly village atmosphere.
I've booked holidays before using Vrbo, formerly Owners Direct and it seemed a sensible way to letting others know how to stay at Chapel House.
I am more than welcome to offer advice and tips, what to do, where to eat, events, best beaches etc - please get in touch.
Why they chose this property
I've been holidaying in Dartmouth for several years spending many happy days/nights/weeks here.
Experts say you know within 7 seconds whether or not you are going to buy a property.... I hadn't even stepped though the gate and I knew Chapel House was right. It is a beautiful old house, dating back nearly 200 years and it definitely has the cute factor or 'curb appeal'. Did I mention the view?!
The location is perfect, less than a 5 minute walk to the Lower Ferry and The Steam Packet, but tucked away from the hustle and bustle. Seeing the steam train come in and leave is always a welcome sight and watching the Higher Ferry is so mesmerising!
Time drifts away with you.
What makes this property unique
There are five main features to love about Chapel House;
Firstly, it has to be the view. Seeing Dartmouth and the Royal Naval College across the water is so magical, the marina is our side of the river and so you can watch people messing about with the boats too.
The 'curb appeal' and cute factor of Chapel House, its just beautiful, outside as well as in!
Wood Lane, its width restriction actually is a real benefit for us! It means very little traffic, only residents of Wood Lane drive down it, being so quiet means a very peaceful nights sleep. Chapel House is almost at the bottom of the hill, meaning an almost flat walk back from the pubs/marina car park/bistro/cafe/village shop, its just a final steep push up the last 25 meters!
Two other features that we love is that its 'upside-down' giving the best views from the main living areas, and that both bedrooms are en-suite, the main bedroom having a large bathroom, perfect for couples sharing.
Chapel House is within 200 metres of The South West Coastal path, which offers so many different options for exploring on foot all year round. There's also fantastic walks up-river with some great places to see and pubs to stop off at.
Kingswear and Dartmouth are incredibly vibrant, all year round there is something going on.
