Comfortable Cottage for 2 in the Heart of Argyll on a farm by lovely Loch Awe
Situated on a farm in a lovely area of rural Argyll with just a short walk to the shores of Loch Awe. Barn is a comfortable peaceful holiday cottage for 2 people, suitable for couples or friends with flexible zip-linked double or single bed options.
A well-designed living area and kitchen upstairs with a birds eye view of a feeder for Loch Awe's red squirrels.
Argyll with its lochs, hills and mountains to climb is one of the most scenic areas of Scotland and Barn is a good base for exploring Oban, Inveraray, Glencoe, Loch Lomond, mid-Argyll where you’ll find Crinan Canal and historic Kilmartin Glen, and the beautiful peninsula of Kintyre. Closer to home, hire a boat for a day on loch Awe, visit Kintail Birds of Prey in Eredine Village, join a Cladich Farm Tour to see their highland cattle or enjoy a walk up the nearby forest track or to the ruined settlements on the farm.
Barn is semi-detached with Stable which sleeps 4 and both are graded 4 star by the Scottish Tourist Board.
The upstairs floor is open-plan with plenty light and views of the hills, and you can see the loch from the windows. The kitchen, dining and living areas are comfortable and easy to live in.
Downstairs you’ll find the bedroom with flexible bed which can be made as either a large zip-linked double bed or separated to make 2 single beds plus a large walk-in wardrobe. The shower room and wc are next door. The entrance porch has plenty space for storing boots and shoes, and hanging coats.
Outside a picnic table in a walled garden area is for guest staying in Barn and there is a bench on the hill nearby for sitting, relaxing and enjoying the views over Loch Awe to the hills and mountains beyond.
Loch Awe Loch Awe is 25 miles long and the longest loch in Scotland. Surrounded by forests, farms, hills and mighty Ben Cruachan .
The Farm Traditional blackface sheep and luing cattle are farmed on 2,000 acres in this beautiful area of Argyll and guests are welcome to walk and explore the farm: - to fish or enjoy a walk to the loch shore - to the viewpoint on An Sidhean (fairy/enchanted view) for a picnic and amazing views of Loch Awe - to old ruined settlements abandoned nearly 150 years ago - on a nearby forest walk (circular walk coming back via the farm) - to our many waterfalls. The ‘Wee’ waterfall is less than 5minutes walk from Barn
Fishing on Loch Awe Fishing for trout and pike is by permit and these are available online.
Nature and wildlife: Red squirrels and Pine Marten come to the feeder by Barn, though the Pine Marten are generally night visitors. Red Deer come into the fields in the evening especially during the colder months and they often take a short cut by Barn when returning to the hill in the morning. When travelling home in the evening you will probably see some small Roe Deer by the roadside. During the spring and summer Loch Awe is also home to many Osprey which swoop down to take fish from the loch. Kintail Birds of Prey is nearby. Eagles, dolphins and porpoises are best seen by joining an organized tour from Oban, Easdale or Crinan.
Exploring Argyll and the west highlands of Scotland: Some ideas, walks and wonderful scenery within easy reach on a day out: - Oban and the distillery - Islands of Mull and Iona (ferry from Oban) & wildlife tours - Inveraray Castle and old victorian Jail - Ruined Castles especially Kilchurn, near Dalmally on Loch Awe and Carnasserie Castle near Kilmartin - majestic Glen Coe which has amazing mountain scenery and the wilderness of Rannoch Moor which you will see enroute, plus the red deer along Glen Etive if you take a little diversion - the ‘bonny banks’ of Loch Lomond – the little village of Luss is nice - Kilmartin Glen has standing stones, burial cairns, rock art and a museum - Crinan Canal (walk along the tow path or hire a bicycle) - take a tour into the ‘Hallow Mountain’ at Cruachan Hydro Electric Power Station
Cycling: if you bring your own bicycles then the tow path along Crinan Canal is lovely.
Horse Riding: Argyll Adventure near Inveraray offer 1hour and 2 hour treks.
Walking: guests are welcome to explore the farm, and our nearest Munro (mountain over 3,000ft) is Ben Cruachan at the end North end of Loch Awe.
Eating Out: there are many lovely cafes, pubs and restaurants for lunch or homemade cake when out and about exploring Argyll and most guests do opt to enjoy a good lunch or early evening meal before returning to their cottage to relax.

Lovely quite, full of nature from birds, ducks, squirrel entertaing us while sitting outside. Lovely area and amazing views from when the sunshine is out and watching the weather change.
Very clean well equipped and comfortable in a beautiful location. Great for a quiet weekend or a base for exploring further afield. Very welcoming owners. Really enjoyed our week. Road access is single lane.

If you're looking to get away from it all this beautiful property is perfect set in a tranquil location a stones throw from the loch. The living space is modern and immaculately clean, Catriona was a very welcoming host who has great knowledge of the area
Amazing property, very rural and secluded ideal for stepping off the world for a while. Waterfalls, deer, sheep, red squirrels, birds of prey and even we think a pine marten all in a week within local walks of the farm 🚜 😀
Amazing place to stay , scenery is amazing. Catriona is an amazing host , nothing was too much trouble for her. From direction to places to visit she was spot on . Thank you so much Catriona
We stayed here for one week and we liked it very much. Loveley place on the lake. We saw deers , birds and red squirrles. We walked, cycled and did some sightseeing trips. In the house, the Barn, we haven't a view on the lake, that was dissapointing.
The host, Catronia, was very friendly and helpful
This is such a gorgeous, peaceful place for a person on a car tour! It's perfect for those wishing to get off the beaten track, or have a base from which to plan day adventures to the ocean, the mountains, the lochs, etc. Blarghour Farm itself has a beautiful waterfall, a kayak launch, a glorious view of the Loch Awe, and lovely spring flowers. Catriona was an angel of a host, full of good suggestions for ferries, dining, and outings. The Barn is an architecturally designed space with every thing a self-catering guest could want or need.
Stunning views, property was lovely. Catriona was nice, welcoming and polite. Kitchen was really well stocked with equipment.
Only issue we had was that the mattress wasnt to out liking, too hard for us, and we couldnt find a double duvet, all we could find in the property was singles, including blankets. Didnt get the feeling it for couples
The property is nestled in hillside location overlooking Loch Awe with wildlife in abundance. And although this is next to a working farm you would hardly know it apart from a few bleats from the sheep. Deer and red squirrels are common companions and the scenery is wonderful. Having travelled extensively along Scotland West coast I believe that this area is certainly among the most pleasing. I am already looking to book for next year and we haven’t reached our home yet.
Scotland at it's best!
Scotland at its best! Wonderful, cosy and comfortable cottage in the middle of the countryside with everything you need for a relaxing holiday. Beautiful excursions in all directions, whether by car or on foot. A lovely hostess on top of that. You couldn't ask for more! 100% recommendation for everyone who appreciates peace, water and landscape.
Ein wundervolles Apartment oberhalb des Loch Awe mit Blick auf den See. Ruhig, hell, top eingerichtet und alles da, was man braucht. Thanks a lot for this wonderful time at the Blarghour Farm Cottage.
If you want a break away from it all would thoroughly recommend this location. Wonderfully presented cottage with all you need, surrounded by beautiful countryside with abundant wildlife. Yes it’s a little out of the way but we’ll worth it.
The accommodation we booked was in the most beautiful location. Looking over Loch Awe. We had everything we needed for our stay as the kitchen immaculate and so well equipped. The host Catriona was an amazing lady. Nothing was too much.
Well done Catriona….I would definitely recommend you ….perfect
We have just returned from our wonderful holiday at Blarghour. We stayed in The Barn which was well maintained and spotlessly clean. Catriona is a fabulous host and made us feel very welcome. The views across Loch Awe are amazing and we have never stayed anywhere so peaceful. During our stay we were able to experience the beauty of Scotland and visited lots of places like Oban, Mull, Iona, Gigha, Glencoe......If you're looking for a stress free holiday we can't recommend Blarghour highly enough!
Property was exactly how we imagined. Beautiful location overlooking the loch. From the view to the wildlife it was just where we needed to be to recharge our batteries. Owners are very nice and we were made very welcome. The cottage itself is very modern and has everything needed for self catering including oven & hob, fridge freezer, microwave etc etc. plus plenty of storage space. The open plan living/ kitchen area is upstairs which was a nice touch as it afforded some views of the surrounding woods and hills. Downstairs the bedroom had plenty of storage and a comfortable bed too so no complaints there. The shower room is well kitted out and very clean as is the rest of the property.
Would we stay here again? Absolutely.
We highly recommend this property to anyone looking to get away from it all. You won't be disappointed.

About the host
Hosted by Catriona O'Keeffe
Catriona was brought up on the Farm, went away to school in Oban and then worked in Ireland and Poland for a few years before happily returning to the farm by lovely Loch Awe with her husband Martin. Why they chose this property
This cottage is part of an old converted barn on the farm which is on a quiet country road in a peaceful setting with beautiful scenery by the shores of Loch Awe.
What makes this property unique
This an upside down house, so you enjoy a good view of the night sky, the deer if they walk by and the squirrels at the feeder. If you open the windows or go for a walk in the morning and evening the bird song is amazing, sunsets can be spectacular and the wildlife is all around if you slow down to look, listen and enjoy the nature.
