About this property

Relaxing and comfortable 16th century cottage on the edge of picturesque village

Our beautiful 16th Century Cotswold stone cottage with leaded windows is thought to have been built around 1590 and in it's previous guise formed part of a farmhouse which is believed to be mentioned in the Doomsday Book.
Located on the edge of the picturesque and quintisentially English village of Castle Combe, it is currently available to rent as a self-catering holiday cottage which can accommodate 4-6 people.

The sitting room boasts an imposing inglenook fireplace which features the original bread and proving oven, and within the inglenook there is a newly fitted and efficient woodburner. There are two comfortable sofas, one of which is a leather sofabed which provides the third double bed. A latch door in the corner opens to the gorgeous curved staircase and leads you upstairs. There are also French doors to the rear which lead onto the terrace, well and garden beyond.

The Cottage has two lovely double bedrooms, both with tradional wrought iron bedsteads. The beds are dressed with white cotton bedding and have feather pillows and feather king size duvets which, together with mattress toppers on the already comfortable mattresses, help you get the most comfortable nights sleep.

There are two bathrooms, one with a lovely slipper bath for relaxing and indulging yourself, while the other has a more practical shower cubicle, and both also feature washbasins, WC's and towel radiators.

The fully fitted ' Dine In' style kitchen has bespoke wood units and oiled oak worktops. It contains everything you need to fully cater for your stay with a double oven; ceramic hob; integrated full sized dishwasher, a large retro style fridge freezer and microwave. For dining there is a traditional farmhouse style table with seating for 6 via a lovely window seat and a selection of chairs

The fully enclosed gardens are mainly laid to lawn with a wealth of shrubs and herbaceaous borders, making the space both relaxing and private. You will find a traditional well in the garden which gives the cottage its name, and which would have originally been the cottage's water supply. There are various well chosen seating spots in the garden including a Lutyens style bench and 2 sunloungers. There is curved stone seating and armchair style seats around the outdoor dining table and together with the barbecue they provide perfect setting for al fresco dining. Oudoor cushions are also provided in the nearby storage box ( we respectfully ask that these are placed back in the box when not in use)

There is parking for 2 vehicles in the lane opposite the cottage door. Please be aware that the lane is owned and regularly used by the local farmer, so we ask guests to take care not to obstruct the farm gate. Also please park respectfully to both our neighbours who are permanent residents . If you have more than two vehicles there is an overflow visitors carpark at the top of the village, a short walk away.

Should you feel the need, we have provided laundry equipment which is ingeniously hidden away in a cupboard on the upstairs landing. Here you will find a washer-dryer; hanging space for drying; an iron and ironing board. A hairdryer is also provided here.

Included within your booking are bedding; towels; electric and central heating fuel. We also provide a welcome basket of firewood for the woodburner in Winter, or a bag of charcoals for the barbecue in Summer.

The cottage is located on a private lane in the upper part of Castle Combe village. The main village is a short walk away either across the field and through the woods or more conventionally via the road and through the Combe.

The village is said to be one of the prettiest villages in England and is in the Cotswolds Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty. It's a vision of honey coloured stone cottages, manor houses and the 13th century St Andrews church. The Bybrook river flows sedately through the village where you'll find ducks and kingfishers along the riverbanks. It's been the setting for many films including Warhorse, Stardust as well as the original Dr Doolittle where they turned the river into a boating harbour!
