About this property

Wye Valley Forest Retreat: Secluded Cottage which sleeps six & dogs very welcome

A guest recently commented: "We were blown away by how stunning both the views and the cottage is; having seen the photos on the website, we knew it was going to be gorgeous, but being there in reality took it to a whole new level, it's so peaceful and serene".

Perched high in the Royal Forest of Dean, with breath-taking views across the Wye Valley & Brecon Beacons, an intimate but spacious Cottage for up to 6 people & their dogs; outside, you'll find a huge, private, decking with Hot Tub & Sauna.

Our Forest Retreat is perfect all year round, for those looking for relaxation, adventure; step or cycle into the forest or to the banks of the Wye for splendid walks, canoeing and a host of other activities and fun (+ some great Ale Houses/Pubs!).

Jay, one of our recent guests, said "The cottage embodied so much character and charm and proved to be the perfect getaway; it’s a truly amazing and magical place".

Originally built for a local miner in the 1850's, the Cottage still retains much of it's original charm e.g. thick walls, low ceilings and narrow entrances; but much of it has been refurbished to modern standards, over 5 levels of intimate and deceptively spacious living.

As Emily, a recent guest, said: "A cosy but spacious house which allowed everyone their own space when needed but also fantastic communal areas with beautiful views out of every window."

It's perfect as a base for up to 6 guests, and their dogs, to retreat from the world, but with easy access to a multitude of adventures and fun - we have plenty of ideas if you need them.

It's ideal for couples or friends looking for a relaxing or romantic hideaway.

The lounge has a log fire (logs are supplied), surround sound system and there is access to free wifi, Bluetooth sound system, 'Firestick', DVD player and library of movies.

The huge decking is an absolute delight, with panoramic views of the Wye Valley, or of the stars after dark; complete with Hot Tub, Sauna, BBQ and table/chairs for al fresco dining.

All bedrooms are decorated to a high standard, with good quality beds; Room 1 has a king size bed and a lovely en-suite; Room 2 has a double beds and Room 3 has comfy 'adult size' bunk beds + there's a good quality guest bed for those who don't like heights!

There's a family bathroom, with an excellent 'power shower', an en-suite shower/toilet linked to the king-size bedroom, and a cloakroom/toilet on the ground floor - all have recently been refurbished to a high standard.

The kitchen is very well equipped, together with a 'range' oven, large fridge, washing machine* and microwave; and there's a 'shabby chic' dining room, which opens onto the decking and comfortable sits six people.

All bedrooms, living rooms, dining room and kitchen afford dramatic views of The Wye Valley and beyond.

The Cottage and garden are only overlooked by the birds so you can feel comfortable to relax and kick back in your own private hideaway.

At night, the garden comes to life with fairy tale illuminations; and there is a chiminea to cozy up to.

Comfortable, high quality, furnishings & décor are provided throughout, all reflecting the rustic nature of The Cottage and surrounding area.

Finally, Omar commented "Truly a stunning... the pictures don't do it justice, from the interior of the house to the view, it's all beautiful!"

Thank you to all our guests for their wonderful comments; to new guests, we hope to see you soon!!

Dads birthday surprise
Fantastic location and can’t fault the cottage and facilities. Attention to detail is faultless. Everything you need and more is provided. Cottage itself is cosy with lots of separate rooms to enjoy. The view from the hot tub over the valley is fantastic. Highly recommended

Why they chose this property

We immediately fell in love with the Cottage, we didn't even have to look inside, it just felt right! We, and all visitors are amazed by the breathtaking and sweeping views of The Wye Valley (an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty') and beyond to the Beacon Beacon and Black Mountains. We never tire of waking up to that view; and watching the sun go down each night!

The decking is huge, on two levels; the top level accommodates the Hot Tub - a wonderful place to relax with a glass of wine or a beer and take in those views!

The Cottage is built in to the hillside with all windows and entrances facing south and on to the decking.

Built in the 1850's for a local miner, it was sympathetically extended and refurbished in the 1980's; retaining much of it's character - like very thick walls and low ceilings - but with new features such as modern bathrooms and showers.

Inside, the living is open plan on five levels, there are plenty of 'nooks and crannies' for guests to have some private time for reading or listening to music (we have a good quality surround sound music system and Bluetooth Speakers; and we have a turntable and selection of LPs for the 'Trads'.

On the lower level of the decking, you'll find a Sauna which comfortably sits six people; and outside, there's a swing chair to either cool off or relax with a coffee in the early morning.

The cottage is within walking distance of a local village and two or three traditional Ale Houses/Pubs; its pretty secluded though, because we're so high above the Valley and surrounded on three sides by trees, a friend once said it was like living in a tree house!

The Forest has an abundance of wildlife, deer and wild boar roam freely; horses too. The River Wye, just a few minutes away, is famed for its fishing, particularly Salmon; and there's a wide range of Forest and River activities for all ages including white water rafting, mountain biking and forest trails.

What makes this property unique

For us, the most unique aspect of our cottage is that we feel totally 'at home' and relaxed when we're there. It's so peaceful and, those views, they're 'to die for'!

The Wye Valley is officially designated 'An Area of Outstanding Beauty'; we couldn't say it better ourselves! And our cottage is located right at the edge or The Forest of Dean, overlooking the Wye Valley and Brecon Beacons.

The Forest was a Royal Hunting Ground at the time of William The Conqueror, but The Celts and Roman’s were early settlers and first started to mine iron ore. You’ll discover many more recent examples of the industry, in Village and Town names, and in now disused railway tracks and stations.

Just a few miles away, you’ll find the Norman ruins of Goodrich Castle; St Briavels Castle, previously an important royal defence on the frontier with Wales; you'll also find World War II defences and disused railways and stations dotted throughout the forest. Within 20 miles, you'll discover the oldest surviving post-Roman fortifications of Chepstow Castle, Raglan Castle, 12th Century Tintern Abbey and the three 'Three Choirs' Cathedral Cities of Gloucester, Worcester and Hereford; the latter famed for the incredible Mappa Mundi and the fascinating The Chained Library treasure.

For our young guests, we've provided 'treasure maps' for the garden and the forest or they can seek a reputed resting place for The Holy Grail, discover locations for the recent Star Wars Movie or follow in the footsteps of Dr Who or Merlin at Puzzlewood (see links below); where they'll discover a maze of pathways winding through the gulleys of mossy rocks, the twisted roots of the yew trees or the bridges and lookouts.
