Second Stay - good place, but bare and poor check-in
I had booked this property for two trips, with this one being too close to the first one for me to adjust. Oh well, got into the no refund zone and left early anyway. Just too uncomfortable to want to finish this stay. Not holding the refund against the host... it is what it is. This is a nice apartment a minute from Aldgate East. It is REALLY close. You pass the Leman Locke B st Suites on the way there (better option IMHO). If this host would figure out a better way to check in, it could be closer to 5 stars. To get to 5 they would need to decorate and get a few missing things in the place, like a trivet, oven mits, coat rack near door, extra blankets/sheets... things that make it a vacation rental and not an apartment cell like you are under house arrest. It is still a 4 star place, nothing bad about it, just what the pictures show.

Barebones Apartment really close to Aldgate East
I chose this apartment due to its location and the two minute walk to Aldgate East. It really is that close... However, Leman Locke - B St Apartments are right next door to this, and they have a receptionist, at the same daily rate. Go with a location where they actually GREET YOU when you arrive. That is main reason I gave this place 4 stars and not 5, however, there are two other reasons for 4 stars. 1. Nothing on the walls... and I mean NOTHING. This place is not lived in, it is rented to Vrbo. No one has ever really lived in this apartment for more than a stay. Why,? not 1 painting on the walls, nothing absorbing the sound that echo's out of the kitchen and into the foyer... It is not a really bad echo, and the building really is quiet inside, but no style, nothing. 2. Furnishings - there are enough places for three to sit. 3. not four, 3. They do have a cot in the closet, so you can convert the living room into a cot room, then where do you sit? in the Folding chair at the dining table that is just barely big enough for 3 people... more like 2. Also, I had to work a couple afternoons and there is no real chair with back support, like an office chair, however, I am not holding that against them for 4 stars since the images never offered that. would be nice though. Positives: -Lots of pots, pans and a coffee press with a hot pot. -Full fridge/freezer so you can save some money cooking in. -Enough plates and silverware for two meals per day (all mix and match from a thrift store which cracks me up). -Dishwasher - worked well, not too loud, we started then went out for the day or evening. -Bed in a bag - if you like that... there is a blanket in the closet that I used. Need more sheet/blanket options. -Lighting is pretty good - only light out was stove top light with fan, but area lights made up for it. -Windows and fan - you will need these, figure out how to open the windows and let the air in... I am not a fragrance person, and the detergent used needed to be aired out twice a day. some might like that... but not me. Had the sewage smell one afternoon that someone else mentioned. Final word- The entry process makes this location a 'never stay here again'. Having to tailgate into the mailroom... then have me stick my hand in a letter box to fish out the key is NOT a secure way to hand off occupancy, let alone being asked to use WhatsApp for messages over Vrbo. In the end, I did not feel welcomed, only allowed.

A Very Good Way Station
This apartment was nearly perfect for me, one adult male, and I'm sure it would be the same for a couple. It had all the amenities and no silly frills, like bad decoration on the walls. As a big plus, it was plenty warm, which is not always the case in short term rentals. The elevator was efficient and the neighborhood burgeoning with more appealing restaurants than I could possibly sample, including the exceptional Ottolenghi and St. John Bread and Wine, both within easy walking distance. Indeed, you could eat yourself to death (I nearly did) at the nearby Spitalfields market and the huge Eataly (bigger and better than the one in Florence, believe it or not). Best of all is the terrific access to both the Aldgate East and Aldgate (and even Monument, if you want) Tube stations. You're anywhere in London toute se suite. No place is perfect, not my home or yours and this stay would have been enhanced by an early visit by the owner to explain the devices and give a quick tutorial on them.

Not very good
The good: It was close to aldgate east tube for central line and it was close to the Tower of London Not so good: Television didn't work and I called property owner to fix and it didn't happen. I made a list of things that needed to be fixed or what I didn't like. A couple of the drape slats were missing. One drape was missing the cord to close the slats. Furnishings were marginal No one at the complex to help out if there is a question. No written instructions on what to do with the trash etc. when leaving. Or how to use the key. Internet said low security so I didn't use. One elevator didn't work and there was trash in the other.

Great location in London, close to everything
First things first - if you are going to rent this flat to be in the city, you have to be prepared for all that goes along with inner-city life. That includes lot of noise from construction, sirens, neighbors, etc. We came prepared with earplugs, but this is just a caveat, and certainly nothing the owner has any control over. The flat itself was perfect for our needs. It had ample space and was well-appointed with a well-stocked kitchen, a washer, a large bathroom, and plenty of furniture. Since I needed to work remotely during a portion of the time there I was delighted to be able to use a desk setup to be able to get my work done. As for the location, we were within a few blocks walk of four grocery stores, which allowed us to be able to prepare meals at our flat as needed. Both the Aldgate and Aldgate East tub stations were a short walk away, which made getting around the city a breeze. We especially liked that we were within walking distance of a number of attractions, such as the Tower Bridge, the Shard (which can be seen from the deck), the Sky Garden and the War of the Worlds Experience (a must see if you are a fan of the H.G. Welles classic, and especially if you are familiar with the Jeff Wayne musical adaptation). In addition to grocery markets the flat is within walking distance of numerous pubs, higher end eating establishments, and fun shopping experiences such as Petticoat Lane market and Spitalfields. As for downsides, in addition to the noise factor we really only encountered a few more nuisances. First, we brought Nespresso coffee pods, but the Nespresso coffee machine was non-functioning. To the owner's credit he was unaware of the being an issue, so may been a recent issue. The kitchen was stocked with a French press, so we were still able to enjoy our coffee. Secondly, almost every utensil, cup, plate and pan in the kitchen needed to be washed. Again, this may have been the work of the previous occupant putting dirty dishes away, as the rest of the flat was spotless. Finally, we did encounter a strong, sulphuric smell in the bathroom that lasted a day and a half. This coincided with similar smells outside, so may have been an issue with the London sewers. One thing to keep in mind is that the key fob is needed for entry into the building through two separate doors before getting to the room, so it does take some coordinating if 2+ people will be out at the same time. All in all, we enjoyed our stay here.
