About this property

Spacious two-bedroomed fully-accessible lodge with lake view in rural idyll

Swallow Lodge has two good sized bedrooms, the master has a king-sized bed and boasts views over the countryside with access to a balcony and outside seating area - perfect for breakfast in the morning sunshine and the twin bedroom has matching solid wood beds. Lodges have central heating, towels and bed linen, which is crispy white 100% Egyptian cotton. The wetroom is spacious and has grab rails and other disabled-friendly features, should guests need them, and a power shower. The fully-equipped self-catering kitchen comes with a dishwasher, oven/hob, washer dryer, microwave, kettle, toaster and all crockery, cutlery and utensils as required. The living room is a light, airy space with balcony access with stunning views across a well-stocked and managed carp lake to the Devon countryside beyond. The lodge is set in a small family-run 11.5 acre complex, called Blagdon Farm, in rural Devon with the opportunity to fish on-site; there is also a (seasonal) heated indoor swimming pool, free WiFi, games room, football/games field, woodland walk, small shop and soon-to-be-completed family BBQ area. Despite its quiet and tranquil get-away-from-it-all location, being on the Devon-Cornwall border means that beaches are a car-ride away, as are the wilds of Dartmoor and many other local attractions to suit both adventurous and more sedentary guests alike. Our guests describe Blagdon Farm as a “hidden gem”, where they can choose to stay home and relax or strike out discover to the larger West Country's bounty, only to return to their lodge, and peace and quiet, at the end of the day. We are known for our garden birdlife, including woodpeckers, wrens and nuthatches and each balcony has a bird table view-able from the living area. Deer, hares and other wildlife are abundant and we have our own rare-breed West of England geese in our cider orchards, free-range chickens with eggs for sale and we hope to get rare-breed Devon Black pigs and White-Faced Dartmoor sheep in the near future. Many of our guests return again-and-again to Swallow Lodge at Blagdon Farm and we always welcome them with a locally-sourced Devon cream tea and help make the rest of their stay as special as we can.

Disappointing
Blagdon Farm has many positives...quiet, rural location, yet many attractions/beaches within an hours drive. Parking just outside "lodge" and large living area/bedrooms with plenty of storage. Kitchen equipped with everything you need and towels/bedding supplied. However, negatives we experienced were the bathroom (which is a wet room) smelt very bad. Not helped by not having an external window. The floor gets soaked with water and despite trying to brush aside, we still had to put on shoes to go to the toilet...not great with a 5 year old! The floor was mouldy and just generally unpleasant. The wifi advertised on their website as "We've not long completed installing our new wifi system - which now covers all the lodges and caravans with a strong signal. " was very intermittent. Not surprising in rural Devon, but disappointing as they had stated it's signal was "very strong". We were looking forward to using the onsite pool, but on arrival were greeted to a greenish pool that was dirty and cold. The owners must be changing the lights as all were out of their casings and left on the side. One side underwater pool light was still connected but the lightbulb out on the side of the water with exposed wiring! Further, the pool has no shallow end for little ones. All in all we deemed too unsafe to swim so could not use the pool. We believe it should be closed for repairs. Games room was closed so we can't comment on that. The patio doors are fiddly to lock at night and lastly you can hear everything in the attached lodge. Unfortunately our neighbours for the week enjoyed late nights with a blaring TV and their language was vile and obscene. Our 5 year old daughter went to bed every night listening to swearing and shouting. I did email the hosts on the first night to complain about this via the email stated on their website and have yet to receive a response 5 days later... Overall, yes there are positives to the site and we were unlucky with our neighbours. But with the swimming pool unusable in our eyes and the bad smell and mouldy floored bathroom we would not stay again and were disappointed.

Great quiet location
Location is great great, fantastic fishing lake. Lodges are dated but didn’t put us off however the bathroom needs serious work as does the swimming pool, if these 2 were ok we would rate 5 star, the lack of cleanliness and disorder were below what we expect but may just be us. I would love to run this place, it could be awesome with investment.

A wonderful break
We had a great time. Beautuful, peaceful location, clean lodge and very friendly owners. The children loved seeing the turkeys and sheep roaming about and the pool was a real bonus. Will definitely be returning. Thank you!

My husband and I moved here in 2016 with our young family. It is a small holiday complex of eight lodges and seven caravan pitches. This is our dream job in our dream location.

Why they chose this property

We are a small family-run business, where we live on-site with our young children. We love living here, it is a beautiful and magical place, and we love to welcome our guests to enjoy their own little slice of Devon for a while.

What makes this property unique

We are blessed with breathtaking scenery, abundant nature and excellent facilities here on Blagdon Farm. The indoor swimming pool is open from Easter until the end of October The games room, carp fishing lake and small shop are open all year. We are busy putting the "Farm" back in to Blagdon and have local West Country rare-breed geese, soon to be joined by local Black Deven and rare-breed pigs and White-Faced Dartmoor sheep for our guests to enjoy. We are working with Devon Wildlife Trust to create and manage our grounds to encourage wild flowers, wild life and wild animals too! Blagdon Farm is a nature-friendly hidden gem and the perfect place to unwind.
