We have been travelling to Florida many times since our kids were little in the 1990's. We have stayed in Naples, Panama City Beach, Miami and Orlando, some of the greatest places on earth. But when we were looking for a permanent home, we decided on Sarasota, and more specifically Siesta Key. (Our photo was taken in Spain, not Sarasota).

We both are working, so we come here during vacation and holidays. Our long term seasonal guests from Canada come to Tortuga for decades, and they treat our home like theirs.

Why they chose this property

We bought from a 97 year old lady who was the original owner since 1980. Her daughter decided that Mom was too old to live a independent life here.

Although she kept good care of the home, we thought the home needed an overhaul to match our expectation. We made our purchasing decision based on three factors: location, location, location.

Tortuga is on the south side of the key, away from most rental properties and shops. Traffic is low. It is 2.5 miles away from the shops, and 3 miles from the mainland.

Our home is in Building A (windows facing the gulf), which has the best view among 3 Tortuga buildings (their homes also have ocean view).

What makes this property unique

The office/club (directly under our home) has a huge kitchen and meeting area. In 2013, during the construction of our kitchen, we borrowed the club to host a dinner with friends. We used the kitchen, silverware, tables, and everything we need for the dinner for free. Tortuga residents do enjoy many privileges.

The indoor-outdoor pool and sauna is below the office, so a walk to the pool is 20 seconds (elevator or stairs). A walk to the beach is a couple of minutes. You don't even need slippers, just walk on your bare feet.

In early 2016, Sarasota City spent millions of dollars to pump sand from the ocean to rebuild the beach. As a result, our semi-private beach is 80 - 100 feet wide. We saw a huge turtle crawling over the beach to lay eggs on July 3. Soon, thousands of baby turtles will be trying to find their way to the sea. It's very exciting.
