About this property

Casa Esperanza: Focus on Spanish life looking down on the Med

Focus on Spanish life by combining beach, culture, monuments, Andalusian cuisine and night life in Pedregalejo, the beach suburb of the city of Málaga and just 2km from the centre - October 2003 saw the opening of the Picasso Museum and the whole of the centre of the city of Málaga was revitalised, 2011 saw the Roman Theatre and the Carmen Thyssen Gallery open, now there is a Russian museum with works from the Hermitage on loan and the Pompidou in the Muelle II port area too.
Casa Esperanza is perched on a hill in a residential area of the old fishing village of Pedregalejo, where fishing boats still go out to fish right off the beach and supply some of the best fish restaurants on the Costa del Sol. Here you will be just another local resident. This is where the Spanish middle-class spent their summers at the beginning of the 1900s. There are few hotels here and this means that the beaches are quiet in summer and you will have them all to yourself in winter. Joined to the city centre by a beach promenade, there is also a good bus service into town as well as a taxi rank nearby. This is a good place to practise your Spanish and there are several schools in Pedregalejo that teach Spanish as a foreign language.
This apartment has one twin and one double bedroom, sitting room, kitchen and shower room. The terrace is a balcony over the sea, perfect for eating al fresco. Casa Esperanza was our home until we moved inland to El Chorro. The apartment is airconditoned butyou usually don't need it, if you opena window at th front and another at the back, the sea breeze cools the apartment naturally.

Beach and culture: Casa Esperanza is about 2 miles from the centre of Malaga where you can find restaurants, bars, museums, Picasso’s home and Museum, parks - there are also good restaurants and tapa bars within walking distance, the fish restaurants on Pedregalejo and El Palo beaches are among the best on the Costa del Sol. El Morlaco park is a 5 minute walk from the house. Cerrado de Calderon is an urbanisation just behind the house and offers: banks, bakery, supermarket, shops, public telephone and hairdressers. Special dates: August fair (bullfights, concerts, flamenco, festivals). Easter (processions). Carnival (Feb). Christmas cavalcade on 5th January.

Discover Andalucía: From Málaga there are excellent communications with the rest of Andalucía. Whether you decide to rent a car or to take public transport there is a wide selection of places to visit either on the coast: Rincón de la Victoria, Nerja, Almuñecar, Marbella, Gibraltar.... or inland monumental cities like Córdoba, Granada, Seville, or you can even ski at the Sierra Nevada resort not forgetting the charming towns Antequera and Ronda. If you are interested in the wild side of Spain, there are several nature parks near the city of Málaga.

From learning Spanish to Moorish castles: There are endless possibilities to make your holiday a success. From learning Spanish to para-ascending....... discover Islamic Spain, the vast fauna and flora, the deserted inland areas, the cuisine, the wine, festivals, museums, the unique Easter processions, fairs, concerts, exhibitions,........

I moved to Spain after I left school at the beginning of the 70s when Torremolinos was just opening up to tourism. After several hotel and office jobs I became a translator and never looked back. We decided to move inland 12 years ago, where we manage 4 holiday cottages in the Nature Park of El Chorro www.homeaway.co.uk/2678

Why they chose this property

The first time I visited Casa Esperanza, before I lived there, I was immediately blown away by the view, so relaxing by both day and night. I was already living in Pedregalejo so I rented one of the apartments first of all and then when the chance to buy came up I took it and I have never looked back.

What makes this property unique

Pedregalejo has still the character of a village although it is only a couple of kilometres from the centre of Málaga. It has also managed to keep its Spanish character over the years. There are few hotels and hostels here and this means visitors don't come in mass. At night from the sitting room you can still watch the lights of the fishing boats in the sea.
