Megalong is Gundungurra language for “Valley under the Rock”
Euroka is Gundungurra language for “A spirit which lived in the sun”
The last Aboriginals to live in Megalong Valley were from the Gundungurra tribe.
The first record of a European coming to the Megalong Valley was of Thomas Jones, a natural history specimen collector in 1818.
The first survey of any land within the Megalong area was made in 1838 when surveyor W. H. Davidson marked off 640 acres. The original grant was to George Aspinall and was claimed to be known as "Megalong Station" and also "Medlow Station", which was later incorporated into the "Euroka" property. Euroka has an historic significance at the Local level as the oldest grazing land in the Megalong and it still retains its original boundaries from the 1830s. It is thought to be the oldest cleared area in the valley

Why they chose this property
In 1884, Premier Stuart ordered the work of finding a horse track from Katoomba to Jenolan Caves to be undertaken. This work was successfully accomplished, trees felled and mile pegs set. Parliament granted £2,500 to create a six foot wide track, which after completion was maintained by just two men it became known as the "six foot track" it starts at Explorers Tree, Katoomba and finishes at Jenolan Caves, part of which runs through Euroka today.
What makes this property unique
Very little of the original Homestead remains today. In 1905 there was a great bushfire that hit Megalong Valley most of the houses in the valley were lost. After the fire a little Catholic Church that had been erected near the Megalong Creek was moved and the small weatherboard church rebuilt and stands today at the Entrance to Euroka (St Josephs). Euroka, the Homestead and Cottage on 430 beautiful grazing acres is as it has been since 1838.
