Thank you Brian, glad you liked the cottage and the town
What a beautiful cottage, it takes you back to the days when life was easy with all the facilities for a comfortable stay, dinner at the Texas Hotel was lovely and the pizza from the Texas Takeaway was on a different level. We went out there to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of life and it worked. We will be back , thank you.
The cottage was well equipped with all we needed. Lots of old time memorabilia to check out.
Only criticisms would be the uncomfortable lounge/divan and no wifi available.

Thank you for your comments. Sorry you didn’t like our brand new sofa. It’s a bit of a compromise between a comfortable bed and seat but we spent the extra and thought it would cover both needs. We deliberately don’t have wifi in the hope that guests will have a break.

Liked: Check-in, location, listing accuracy
Disliked: Cleanliness
I left after one night as I could not safely get in and out of the bath to use the shower. The presentation of the cottage is rather grotty. It needs a jolly good spring clean.

I’m sorry that you did not enjoy your stay. We clearly provide information in our booking page that we provide a claw foot bath, however we have installed grab rails all around it for safety. The house gets thoroughly cleaned after each visit however with all of the storms in the last couple of weeks there has been less opportunity to do the bigger cleans
Absolutely charming and gorgeous cottage with everything one could need. Bed was unbelievably comfortable, firewood aplenty, hot water was incredible. We stayed a week and did not want to leave. Towns people are friendly, it is an absolute gem! Jenny...Rachels Cottage is an absolute credit to you!! We will be back.

Thank you Kim, it’s always a pleasure to have you stay.
Lovely short stay in ‘Rachel’s Cottage’. Lots of quirky features. The bedrooms & lounge in one building at the front attached via a flat deck to the bathroom and large eat in kitchen at the back. The deck had a table and chairs, all were very private. Perfect location in the Main Street next to Foodworks and short walk down to the bakery and great pub.The cottage had everything you would need. Beds were comfortable. Good strong hot shower over clawfoot tub. Pretty front porch overlooking the cottage garden perfect for a cuppa.Visited the fabulous Texas Regional Art Gallery just down the street and 5 minutes drive to the Rabbit Works, an interesting part of Australia’s history, well worth a visit.
We had a very enjoyable stay. Everything is in order just as described. Kindling and timber for the fire was supplied. The authentic cottage was a wonderful experience again. This is the 4th time we have visited over the last 10 years. And we will again.
My family lives in Texas, and we have found a home away from home. 'The Cottage' gave us the privacy we needed but allowed family and friends to visit. Made our trip a great one.

About the host

My Great Grandfather built the cottage with his brothers. My grandfather was born there as were his brothers and sisters. My Great Aunty Ray lived there all her life, and it was a highlight for us to go and visit her. Long Weekends would often be spent by the fire, working on a project that needed to be done, chopping firewood and eating Aunty Ray's great cooking.
Why they chose this property
Although Aunty Ray never married, she was loved by all of her relatives, and friends in town. The family had helped maintain the house while she lived there, but she was in care in the hospital for 6 years, and the house needed much maintenance. It was left to 2 of her nieces, both whom had young family and/or ill health, and were unable to do the massive job of up keeping the property. It was sold for pittance after my uncle managed to stay a demolition order on it. It was bought by a couple who split the back block and put a house on it, but they also did much work in saving the house. New posts, restoring the framework of the house. It was sold in 2003 (I think) when we missed out on an offer on the cottage, and was sold again in 2005 when my husband Bruce and I were able to buy it. It took a lot of money, hours of hard labour and love to get it back to the comfortable cottage that it is now, and we have tried to keep it in the spirit that Aunty Ray would have been proud of. My mother and aunty's are able to visit and relish in the memories of many happy times.
What makes this property unique
The simple pleasure of sitting by the open fireplace toasting marshmallows and sipping port. To wake up in the morning, make a coffee and sit on the front verandah and enjoy the birdlife in the front yard, while the town wakes up, and gets busy in it's own special way. Taking a coffee down to the Dumeresq River and enjoy the flow of the water on a hot day. To be able to stay in a real heritage cottage, with detached kitchen and dining, whilst having to walk across the verandah to the kitchen and bathroom is unique.
