Stunning Log home in the true "Heart" of Wisconsin.
Come enjoy a stunning, handcrafted log home, situated on well stocked, 63 acre semi-private lake. Although the official description is “cabin”, visitors invariably claim “Cabin? That is no cabin!”
While nestled in a large stand of red pines and birch trees, the girth of the cabin logs outsize the trees surrounding it. Visitors are immediately wooed onto the wrap-around deck providing a great perch to view the 400+ feet of shoreline. When you first enter the home you will be awed by the craftsmanship; from the log work in the 24 ft. high vaulted ceiling, to the local fieldstone fireplace. The antiques and cabin themed décor is just the icing on the cake.
our rate is based on 6 guests, but we allow up to 10. Additional fees apply for each guest over 6.
IInside you will find one bedroom on each of the three floors, providing a bit of solitude for each. The basement bedroom is decorated in the manner of old logging camps typical of the area. A handmade, reclaimed barnwood bunk bed is outfitted with new mattresses and can fit adults or children. Also in that room is a full sized sleigh bed. The room adjoins a well-appointed bathroom with a large shower and cozy woodland feel.
The main floor has an Eastern facing bedroom welcoming great sunrises over the lake. A walkout sliding door gives secluded, quiet access to the wrap around deck. The vaulted ceiling and fan, and two extra windows, allow sleeper to control the airflow in a myriad of ways. The bedroom is joined to the second full bath, with a vintage claw footed tub and reclaimed needle work art from area antique stores.
The loft bedroom is accessed by a lovely log stairwell. The view is stunning and the square footage impressive. The ½ bath provides a private place to get ready and for convenient restroom needs.
Besides these bedrooms, there is a hide-a-bed couch in the basement, and plenty of room for an extra air mattress. All together the house sleeps 10 people in beds (or hide-a-beds). Bring your own air mattress and linens if you require more sleeping arrangements. The main living area has plenty of seating (including around the dining table) and extra chairs are scattered around the home for use as well.
The owner can provide lots of ideas of things to do, but the local area supports hunters of all types, fishermen, snowmobilers, hikers, cross country skiers, antique hounds, and people who enjoy central Wisconsin in general. Day trip ideas will be provided in a separate excursion description. The lake is a private lake, but you can launch a boat with 10 hp max engine on a shared access across the lake.
Feel free to bring kayaks, canoes or paddle boats as well. The dock is outfitted with boat bumpers, a bench and a ladder for swimmers.
Our house is the only rental in the neighborhood. All of the residents are hard working folks and they aren't always happy when guests get a little rambunctious. Fireworks, music piped outside, drones, F'Bomb balloon fights, GUNS, blow up dolls....you have no idea. If you were looking to bust loose and have a "rambunctious" stay I might suggest you look for someplace a little more remote or in the heart of a vacation town. Ours is a quiet nights and working families raising-kids kind of neighborhood. You'll have a serene stay at our house and the neighbors appreciate this way.
This property has one security camera mounted on the garage recording only the driveway and front door.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay!Communication with the owner was prompt and very friendly. This unique log cabin was exceptionally clean, roomy and comfortable. Furniture and beds were modern and cozy. Provided games of darts, quarto, and puzzles were a nice bonus. Kitchen was more than adequately stocked for all of our cooking needs. More than enough well lit parking. Great place that we are looking forward to staying at in the summer as it sits right along the lake!

You guys definitely made the most of it, even in the dead of winter. It's pretty up there in the winter, isn't it?
Thank you for pointing out all of our high points. We look forward to hosting you again.
The cabin was clean, comfortable, and easy to relax in. The view was beautiful. The Host was approachable and friendly via texting, and very organized, which made planning a breeze.
This property was awesome. Check in was easy. Kitchen was well stocked. Bedrooms were cozy. Fishing was good. We liked the smaller lake. It was a great vacation.

Isn't it fun to stay in a house that has so much at your fingertips? Hopefully you felt like you were staying at a favorite relative's house. In other words, you used the home and the lake to the max and had a relaxing time doing it. I look forward to hosting you again in the future.

I love the term "Easter Eggs". Yes, there is a lot to find in our well decorated home.
It was a pleasure to host you, but potential renters should know that we don't have a "mice" neighborhood, although there is an occasional mouse in fall. ;)
We had a FANTASTIC experience! Thank you for sharing your beautiful slice of heaven with us! We brought our own canoe and really enjoyed fishing on such a quiet, secluded lake.
As usual, this is a great place to stay and Krista is very responsive and accommodating

I love the "as usual." My return customers mean so much to me. Your group is always a delight to host (always garnering a 9.5/10 from the cleaning crew. ) I know, as usual, you'll want to know what the 0.5% deduction was. I bet they would be hard pressed to tell me. In my eyes that is a perfect score.
If your looking to build memories? This is the place.
It was exactly what we needed as a family post Xmas...a ton of laughs, games and lasting memories! A great spot!

I wish you had had enough snow that the local tubing hill was open. Oh well, keep in mind we've got great fishing and a swim raft in the summer.
Your group was a pleasure to host.
We have stayed here before and me and my wife have said this will be our yearly family vacation place. We just love it there and Krista is super friendly.

You guys really know how to make the most of our place and that warms the cockles of my heart (whatever this are. ) Repeat customers rock!
Excellent experience again. This was our second 5-day stay. Property and grounds can't be beat. Krista is an excellent and responsive host. Hope to be back next summer. Like to put in a plug for Oliver with Wausau Paddle. He delivered 2-1 person kayaks for our stay. He went above and beyond and delivered from Wausau. He is a good guy and great to deal with.

So glad to host you as our first guests of the busy season. You did really well at enjoying the place despite it not quite being summer yet. I hope to host you again in the future!

So happy to host you and our family a second time. You are welcome anytime and we agree with your love of the area. It might not be the classic Wisconsin lake country, but that is what makes it so great. It is the REAL Wisconsin and not the over developed Disney-esque feel of resort towns. Lots of fun nature areas and ag-themed family fun.
Cabin was amazing! Very clean & comfortable. They had anything you needed in the kitchen and plenty of comfy beds for everyone.

About the host
Hosted by Krista Ruhnke
Phillip and Krista have been married for 35 years and purchased this unbelievable land in 1989. The home was meant to be the primary home for them and was built by a local man (who owns his own such home in the area to this day.) When Tombstone Pizza closed their headquarter in Medford, Krista lost her job and they moved back to Illinois to pursue better jobs. In the meantime, Krista's father was retiring from the Chicago Fire Department and wanted to move to the country. He moved in the home and acted as general contractor and caretaker for his last 15 years of a fabulous life. It would be a shame not to share this beautiful property with more people, and VRBO is the avenue to do that.
Why they chose this property
Krista grew up in a very humble log home in Wonder Lake, IL. They both were enchanted by the impressive log homes being built by a then-23 year old local man who acquired his skills at a Minnesota school for Swedish Scribe method log crafting.
Krista, Phill and Krista's father did much of the work on he home once the log structure was fleshed out. A lot of blood, sweat and tears went into this structure and that made it very painful to think of selling when Krista's father passed on.
Krista's father is the one responsible for many of the antiques in the home. They were inherited from generations of German family members, and refinished by him while working at the Chicago firehouse. These decor items are so at home in the "cabin" that the owners can't picture them anywhere but there. Come see for yourself.
What makes this property unique
The empty piece of property was an amazing find in and of itself. in 1989 these properties were barely noticed by the locals and this piece was owned by a man in Illinois. He won it in a card game! (You can't make this stuff up.)
Krista and Phill cleared off countless trees; despite Phill having never even worked with a chain saw before. Once the building site was clear they worked with a wood foundation company to start the construction. Never heard of a wood foundation? Google it. It's fascinating. There are structures in this country that are built on centuries old wood foundations; and that was before the technology of drain tiles and plastic wrapping. In the end, a wood foundation takes away that damp and particularly chilly feeling of a traditional cement foundation. It is also convenient for when you want to add outlets, duct work, etc.. See if you can feel the difference while you stay there.
