The charm of this historic cottage cannot be denied, and the commitment to preservation is commendable. Melissa was responsive as a host. There was a lot of space around the cottage that made it feel private, and a small space fenced in for our dogs. A few things that would have made our stay even better: cleaner cooking pots; real coffee mugs; better instructions for things like the outside light, and space heaters. There was also a lot of noise throughout the night from large trucks and motorcycles going by.
Really nice and historic. Plenty of room. There is even a small fenced in area for the doggie. We enjoyed the stay very much.

Hi Bob, I’m so sorry you did not enjoy your night. I had no idea you thought the bathroom had no heat as you did not communicate that to me. It is very much heated and i would have happily clarified its location had you asked. As for the fees, I as a host have no decision or choice as those are assessed by VRBO and are shown prior to your booking. Had you felt the fees were excessive you had the option to not book the stay. As for road noise, there are only 400 people in our quiet town and after 6pm even the sidewalk is rolled up as most of the residents are rural. The items you found distasteful are truly regretable and fully beyond my control or influence as a host. Your review is the first of its kind that I have received as they are all 10/10. As a host it is always my sincere effort to provide the most enjoyable stay possible for my guests.
What a cute, cozy friendly place to stay. The beverages and snacks provided were a welcoming touch. I stayed with a friend and we each had one dog apiece. We were in town for and event at the H. Cooper Black park and the close proximity made for a leisure start and end to each days events. I would highly recommend this cottage and would definitely plan to stay there again if in the area.
The home was truly amazing! A step back in time! Although the location isn’t the closest to food options, etc, there is a gas station right across the street. ( and this was the perfect location for us after heading to Bucees ! Also the property manager was very communicative with everything! If I find myself around there again, I know where I’ll be staying!
We were looking for a place to stay here some of the state parks in this rental fit the bill. Host was very responsive. Place was very clean. Cool to stay in a home that was that old. There’s a lot of interesting history in the area too. Large yard for the dogs. It’s on the Main Street in Society Hill which is a bit busy but quiet inside the house. The screened in porch was a lovely space to eat meals. Would stay here again…
Loved this property it was absolutely immaculate. I have a dust allergy and had no problems at all at this property. It was so clean. The property manager was very responsive. All the beds were comfortable. The Wi-Fi worked The location was convenient to H Cooper Black. I will definitely be back.
Melissa was an awesome host. Met us at the house and have us all the information we needed. Told us about the history of the home and the area. She is so knowledgeable. The house was fantastic. Hated to leave. Would definately stay again.
We were very happy with our recent stay during January 2020. Melissa was there to great us and show us the property and give a brief history. Melissa had some items stocked in the kitchen that you always need when away, namely coffee and wine. She was very prompt to respond to any questions. It was great bein g able to let the dogs in the small fenced in yard instead of having to walk them. We would highly recommend the Burn Cottage.

Hi Tom, Thank you so very much for your very positive and kind review. I noticed however you rated the cottage as a 1. Is this in error or was there an issue or concern regarding your stay that would warrant a 1 out of 5 rating?
This was a fun place for my son and me to meet halfway between where he lives in NC and we live in SC. If you like historic houses, this is a real treasure! We appreciated the history of the property and furnishings as well as hearing more about the history of Society Hill and the local area. We enjoy both history and the outdoors, so we explored not only Society Hill, but also the historic districts of nearby Bennettsville and Cheraw, as well as Cheraw State Park and the lovely walking trail across Lake Paul Wallace in Bennettsville. We spent a lot of time on the screened-in porches and the front porch, but also appreciated the spacious dining room for eating and playing games and the TV and living room for watching movies at night. Melissa is an excellent host; she made sure everything was right for our stay -- and she is a great storyteller!
We were in there area to visit family and attend a funeral. We needed a place of our own to use as a home-base and booked last minute.
We arrived to a clean, cool, and quaint, well appointed house in Society Hill. The host has decorated with antiques and beautiful periodpieces. This is definitely a one-of-kind experience for those that love history.
The host had supplied the house with everythong to make us feel comfortable. The host supplied us with bagels/english muffins, butter, cream cheese and jelly, juices, granola bars, instant grits and ice. We purchased eggs and had breakfast each day of our stay. We had everything that we needed, right down to cooled beer mug in the freezer. The kitchen is adequately appointed with dishes, silverware, pans, a toaster, coffee maker, and microwave. The stove meets the period and is a family heirloom.
Overall, this is the perfect home for anyone into historical gems nestled in the Northern South Carolina area. If possible, I will be booking this quaint home again when I visit the area. Thank you for a comfortable home-base in our time of tragedy and stress.
A nicely furnished cottage with many amenities. Great location that met our needs. Very easy to communicate with owner via text. Melissa is very responsive to guest inquiries and needs. we will be repeat visitors.
Mostly had a problem with website. Other than that it was nice. Would stay again

Thank you so much for your review. As a host it is my primary goal and priority to address any issues my guests may encounter during their stay. Had I been aware you were having any issues with anything it would have been addressed immediately. As I was not made aware and believe your issue was with the VRBO site, not your accommodations, I would encourage you to please let VRBO be aware of your concerns. Also, the reviews here are regarding my actual accommodations, not VRBO. I look forward to future visits and your return to Society Hill.
We were celebrating 20 years of marriage, wanted to bring our dog, did not want a hotel or condo, and wanted a quiet setting but still close to lakes, parks, and ocean.
Found this quaint cottage with history. The pictures do not do justice. Beautiful mix of history, comfort, and modern touches.
The host is fantastic! She communicates, answers questions, gives suggestions of where to eat and what to go see.
We were also pleasantly surprised at the snacks, breakfast selections, drink choices, and dog snacks!
We will be back and look forward to staying again!
We chose it primarily for its convenient location along the route to visit family. We would stay again. The host was helpful and welcoming. The house is amazing in it history, details, beauty, comfort. We travel with our Golden Retriever, who was welcome. There is even a fenced area for the dog to be pit off leash. For us, the place was a winner!
My girlfriend and I love staying at historic properties and the Burn Cottage did not disappoint. The photos do not do it justice, especially the high ceilings in the original portion of the dwelling. Tasteful antiques are in every room. The dog run was perfect for our little companion...
This home is simply stunning. It has so much charm and history. My husband and I were so curious about the history of the Burn cottage. It’s not often you get to stay in a place so old and yet comfortable and peaceful
There was a little too much perfume (especially in the largest bed room, perhaps a rug powder?) but that would be my only suggestion for the owner.
The owner Mellissa, was polite and friendly. She, thankfully, allowed my husband and I to check in without assistance. This was so important for us during this pandemic.
I really hope the owner will let us come back again! My dog, spouse and I love the home and would love to visit again.
Thank you Melissa!!
This is a cozy house with lots of charm. The owner is great to work with: she responds immediately to any questions and is ready to Spring to help if needed. She keeps the house stocked with little snacks and bagels for breakfast - which my kids loved. She even sticks doggie treats for families with pets. Definitely recommend!
The owner went the extra mile to make sure the house was safe and clean for us during the pandemic. She was very friendly and shared all the information we needed to have a great stay. My kids, mom, and I all found the house charming.
